Willihammer Provisional Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Without question we get the politicians and political system we deserve. The good news is that local governments are generally really competent relative to the rest of the world, so it has minimal impact on day to day lives of most people.I agree, and thank Christ for that. Still, its embarrassing that this goes on at any level.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 So is this the place for some classic dead baby jokes or not?
stringer bell Verified Member Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 This Center for Medical Progress (producers of the video) sure does look and sound bogus from where I sit.I don't like "trap videos" no matter the political viewpoint. Scott Walker had this done to him (taped phone call), and I try to discount what was said there. I know that ACORN was undone by heavily edited undercover video and this isn't the first of this type to target Planned Parenthood. The editing is the thing. The nine minute video is damning, but reading the entire transcript reveals a much different story.
Shane Wahl Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 I posted on FB that this kind of garbage (and it is garbage and propaganda to make Planned Parenthood, all of things, look bad) is simply meant to be tossed out there by conservatives because they cynically take advantage of this fact:Americans (in particular, it seems) will believe anything the first time they are told it and it doesn't matter if it is shown to be false later, or an outright lie later (which this amounts to). Mention Saddam and 9/11 once or twice, link up al qaeda and the Taliban, ACA and "death panels" and so on and so forth. The populace is not made up of critical thinkers and so it just doesn't matter what the hell one says.

From what I have read from conservative/Christian sites, it seems that the thinking is more that they are trying to raise awareness of what actually happens during an abortion/to the aborted fetuses, thinking that the "middle" on the issue will be more sympathetic to their position. There was a brief time that it was thought this would be the breakthrough needed for the pro-life movement. Since there hasn't been the outrage expected, it is now the liberal media's fault for suppressing conservative ideas. This isn't unlike most political ideas/debates. If only people understood the issue better and the other side/media didn't use dirty tricks to suppress the information, then most people would come around.

Planned Parenthood is a valuable service for millions of women.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Snopes has it listed as 'Undetermined' so the veracity is still, well, undetermined. Of course, Snopes veracity is still, well, "undetermined", as well.
drjim Provisional Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 No. This is about picking at something that they think people who don't think critically will respond to, for whatever reason. Planned Parenthood is a valuable service for millions of women. So here's the problem with that line of thinking that you need to consider. There are a significant amount of people in this country that think that easy and frequent abortion is the biggest moral scandal of our time. I'm somewhat sympathetic to this way of thinking. Their thought with these videos is that if people became aware of what happens they will change their way of thinking. The idea is that people are accepting of final outcomes but don't want to think about the process that gets to that point, and exposure to the process will lead to people changing their minds. If you don't think this happens with many other political issues I don't know what to tell you. I don't agree with these tactics and I would pursue a different set of policies to reduce the number of abortions (see my first post), put that is probably true for many different political questions that are out there. All that said, while I acknowledge the benefits of fetal medical research, it is ethically sketchy (to be kind) and I suspect the ethics behind it won't stand the test of time. Also, while Planned Parenthood certainly does a lot of good, and defunding would be foolish (almost certainly would result in more abortions), their hands aren't exactly clean. They don't pay people for abortions but they are soliciting donations for fetuses and I suspect they are corrupt in ways that haven't come to light (yet).
stringer bell Verified Member Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 I am a "shades of gray" person on abortion. I suppose I don't like the attitude of the PP employees talking about fetal parts like they are chicken wings an drumsticks......however I can't get past the fact that this is heavily edited "attack video". It brings me back to photoshopped and dubbed videos that completely misrepresent.

Both parties have adapted quite well to the sound byte culture we live in and love to pander to their base masses over stupid things such as this. It's part of my disgust with modern politics, as people in general seem to ignorant to realize that it goes on. They are quite happy when 'their side' is doing this, but get all uppity when it's someone on the other side does it to them. It's all hypocrisy at the end of the day and no real problems are being solved.
