Trade candidates - Tulo?

It has been quoted in mlbtraderumors that Tulo is not as explosive as he was after the hip surgery.  Rockies would still want major package plus taking on his entire salary.  Pass.

No, he is owed another 100 mill and his splits away from Coors are nothing special.

He's a quality defender (though not as good as he used to be) and his career away OPS is .813.  An .813 OPS from a quality defender at the shortstop position is special. There are only two qualifying shortstops who have an OPS that high this season and he is one of them.

People said the same thing about Holliday when he left Coors.  Ooops.  People think it's only about leaving Coors, but it's also about playing a ton of games in parks like Petco, Dodger Stadium and AT&T.  Not exactly hitters parks over the course of his career and not to mention against quality pitching staffs from those teams to boot on a regular basis.Tulo is a great hitter, period. And he's a leader, he has the intangibles too while still being a great player.

Even if he played 120 games a season, 120 games of him and 42 from others still makes the best shortstop situation.

At least for another couple years until Correa takes his belt.

Like buying an old Cadillac DeVille with all the extras. Great in its day, but now you're looking for something newer, easier on gas, less expensive, better average...

Forgive me for posting this without checking out his contract. Signed at $20mm through 2019 and anothe $14mm in 2020....that's pretty tough to swallow.

I do feel like catcher and shortstop are the positions the Twins should be looking for long-term solutions at...and they have a deep farm.

Tulo would be a great get despite the money owed to him.  There are very, very few ways to add top tier SS's and the Twins have a steady stream of min wage (500K) prospects to plug into the roster and keep the overall payroll number down.  The problem with a Tulo trade is that they are going to want a significant prospect package (even if reduced recently) for him.   I would instantly trade Arcia and a Tyler for him but the Rockies instantly say no.

Tho I dont want to trade for Tulo, unless he is almost given away, but I think a trade would have to include at the minimum IMO , Gordon, Gonsalves, and Kepler for them to do it......and i dont want to trade that away for Tulo and his contract.

I would do that instantly.  Money is only good if it can be spent somewhere useful later.  FA rarely presents really good options for spending money and arguably the Twins will have most of the roster positions tied up any with promising young players on low contracts.  Tulo (if healthy) is a game changer in the Twins lineup.  Yes, he has some health concerns but that is the only reason it would even remotely be possible to pick him up for 3 fringy top 100 prospects.

He has more than health concerns. His power is nearly gone and his defense is diminishing. Of bigger concern, would the Twins be willing to look to give large buyouts/extensions to Sano, Buxton or others if they already are on the hook for two $100M contacts to fading vets?

Buxton and Sano won't even be in arbitration until Mauer's contract is over.  That is a non-issue.  tulo's contract ends during their first arb year.  by then Nolasco has been gone for 2 years and Ervin Santana is also gone.

The reason to not add Tulo to the payroll is because the team needs to add a FA.  I don't see anyone out there that they pursue.   I still don't see them getting into a bidding war for a 150-250M ace.

Living in Wyoming I get to watch a lot of Rockies games. Tulo is a great ss. I think it would take a lot more than the three players listed.

First off Colorado is always looking for pitching.

I think it would look like ABW II, Thorpe, Myers, (or Steward or May) and a fourth player.

He would instantly improve the offense. He would probably hit third or fifth with Sano hitting fourth. When was the last time we saw the middle of the lineup with this much power? The eighties? I don't ever remember having a ss with this much power? (Give him some time to heal from his surgeries. Just two years ago people were predicting him to be the MVP in NL and the best ss in baseball.)
