you REALLY have to WANT to see what caused such a harsh post  Even with the word 'catch' in the OP, there was nothing close to suggesting Joe should be catching nor slamming Joe for not catching.

What is your problem?

I want to note that this was a joke. This is not a "Stick a fork in Mauer, he is done" post. Joe Mauer is one of my favorite Twins players. Joe is just miserably cold at the plate right now and I found it kind of amusing that Aaron Hicks, one of the least productive Twins in the past two years had an average close to one of the most productive twins ever, Joe Mauer.

that's exactly what it sounded/read like to me.

Hopefully the race spirals up. Then everyone's a winner.

I know on this site when we talk Joe Mauer, it is a hot button topic that gets us nowhere between the opposing factions, but I want to say a few things and I hope it isn't taken negatively.

Joe is one of my favorite players, I have always backed him up on this site. I have to admit, it's really discouraging to see him hitting in the .260's on June 4th. Putting 2009 aside as an anomaly, I really miss the .330BA, .400OBP, and 10ishHR's. I am starting to program myself into thinking Joe grew old quick and the years of catching took their toll. The positive is that I am not ready yet to resign myself to that outcome and I am hoping he can find his mojo again. Damn, if Mauer can end the season hitting .310, with an upper .300'sOBP, it will make this team a whole helluva lot better. I am preparing myself for the worst, but am hoping for the best, and I damn well hope the latter outcome happens.

As for Hicks, when the Twins drafted him, it was a known fact the he was pretty raw. These days, sometimes it takes a player drafted out of high school 7-9 years to figure it out before they make an impact. Trevor Plouffe is a good comparable. I don't know if Hicks will fail or succeed, but he certainly looks like a different player the third time around. I guess time will tell.

All I can say is I hope they both succeed and help this club reach it's potential and maybe challenge for a playoff spot.

I have been impressed with hicks as of late, he seems to have much more confidence in the OF and at the plate, even the balls that are getting caught seem to be at least being hit hard (last nights line out to LF) and the one that went to the wall in the 1-0 loss come to mind.

It would be great if the bat continues to come around as in 2016 an outfield of:

LF- Hicks

CF- button

RF- Rosario

Could be the best defensive set up baseball has seen in a while.

Better than Cain, Gordon and Dyson/Orlando/Rios and/or Marte, McCutchen, Polanco.

Mauer still has the 2nd highest average (qualified) on the team, 2nd most RBI and 3rd most runs. He is struggling not doubt (esp with bases empty) but let's not pretend he is costing us ball games.

In fact I am encouraged with the twins run of success with him in a slump, hopefully when he bounces out of it he will

Help us win games when other guys are slumping (pitching, batters etc)

above when I responded to your post by saying 'Better than Cain, Gordon and Dyson/Orlando/Rios and/or Marte, McCutchen, Polanco.' I meant to have a question mark there, not a period.  You think our three (Rosario/Buxton/Hicks) will be better defensively than those two team OF?

I apologize for my (since deleted) post which was an overreaction to (what I mistakenly perceived as)another Joe Mauer bashing. Joe has take so many catcher's shots to the head and body that he may never regain his hitting skills. If I were asked to sacrifice my frontal lobe for my baseball team, I'm guessing $23 million would not be enough

It WAS a joking jab at Mauer's BA, but that's where it ended. It had nothing at all to do with the fact that Joe doesn't catch anymore and/or whether or not he should..

I've always thought with Hicks' arm he belongs in right field if he's not in center. On a major league team you put your least-skilled defensive player in left. (That's why Young and Willingham played there.) Left field is larger than right in Target Field but I think Rosario could easily cover that ground.

I hope that Morneau's latest concussion news puts a stop to those who say he should be catching.  I know Morney probably took more hockey hits as a youngster but playing QB kind of puts you in that category, too.

If it weren't that the Twins paid him to be a star, most people would be satisfied with Joe's performance.  And he is still contributing to this team.

Pay has zero to do with the fact he can't hit compared to other 1B for the past year+. Nothing.

And, no one on this entire thread is suggesting he catch, not sure why people are arguing against that.....since no one is arguing for it.

Curiously, other threads do exist and in some of those people have made that argument. Posts don't exist in a vacuum.

I just wish both averages were 100 points higher, then that would be a great debate.

That would do it.

Honestly, I do think that's Joe's cumulative injuries have diminished his skills. I also think Joe Mauer with some skills diminished is a better hitter than many playing at their peak. I can but hope the rest of the season can confirm that.

A few years back a lot of people figured Joe was a sure HOF'r. Without a big turn around my guess is that is now a very long shot.

I still think his head is not right and may never be, sad to say.

Whatever the reason, his inability to pull the ball with any authority has reached epic proportions. Boston was literally playing their RFER all the way over into the right center gap, and shallow, even against RH pitching. It's shocking to see.

Brunansky: Joe, I'd like to work on some things with your swing.

Mauer: Tom, how many batting titles do you have?

Brunansky: Um, none but....

I really don't think he's this unreceptove.

I just think he's lost.
