A stand-up double that involved him sliding in to 2nd.

The nature of his hit is not affected by his foot speed. That was a stand up double. And he needed to slide to earn it. :)

So if we hold the lead...does that give Joe  +1 WAR for today? I mean, he hit a homerun, which won a game (hopefully)?  PS Still think WAR is dumb if that isn't the case

Hope, yes. But counting wins before they're won is very dangerous. I'm superstitious that way. :)

Sounds like you are looking for Win Probability Added. It won't be +1.0 for a solo homer in the top of extra innings, but it surely raised our chances from slightly below 50-50 to well above.
