RedBull34 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Welcome to the Twins. Not a bad pickup for Fuld!
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 One can never have too many #5 pitchers. Had to get him in case Correia gets moved, how else could you justify blocking Meyer and May if that happened? For the record I don't mind the move as long as the Twins side of the trade was marginal AND Meyer and May do not have to jump over him.
RedBull34 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Author Posted July 31, 2014 I'm hoping he's more Gibson then Worley!

I don't think he qualifies as a #5 starter.
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Trade Deadline Day is here, and the Twins have already made a trade. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Minnesota Twins have acquired soft-tossing left-hander Tommy Milone from the Oakland A's. The Twins sent outfielder Sam Fuld to the A's in return. In potentially related news, hearing that the Twins are going to call up Kennys Vargas.Tommy Milone has spent parts of the past three seasons with the A's after a couple of games with the Nationals in 2011. His career record is 32-22 with a 3.84 ERA. In 2014, he is 6-3 with a 3.55 ERA in 16 starts, but with the recent additions to the A's rotation (Jeff Samardijza, Jason Hammel and Jon Lester), he has been squeezed out of the rotation. He reportedly asked for a trade earlier this week. Vargas has had a breakout year in New Britain for the Twins this year. Though he has slumped of late, the large, switch-hitting DH/1B has a lot of power and will likely get an opportunity to play a lot. Click here to view the article

That's nice, we'll see how well that ERA and terrible K/9 translates away from Oakland. Again, I like the move, as long as it isn't another road block for the guys we hope are the pitchers of the future.

nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Ha, traded for Sam Fuld?! I liked Fuld as a stop gap but would give him up in a trade in a heartbeat. Danny Santana full time CF? Welcome back Aaron Hicks? What happens now?
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Works alright for Gibson & Hughes. Hughes can miss some bats, Gibson is getting better. Regardless, pitchers who can't strike guys out have to rely on luck and defense, two things the Twins are short on. Trading him for Fuld is a great move, who would have thought Ryan could have gotten anything of value for him, especially an actual living breathing starting pitcher? Still, these kinds of pitchers are a dime a dozen and the Twins really don't need more. He's better than most they have, but he still can't miss many bats.
Mike Frasier Law Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 What do we know about Milone? - He's under team control through 2017- He's 27 years old- he's a career average pitcher (exactly 100 ERA+)- career 6.5 k/p and 2.0 bb/9- fly ball pitcher (career 36.8% GB%) Those numbers put him as an upgrade to all our current pitchers except Hughes, methinks

They got him for basically free.2. It's a long shot better then what happened with Presley earlier.
30whales Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Rhett Bollinger @RhettBollinger 4m Also, Tommy Milone will report to Triple-A Rochester for now. Vargas takes Fuld's place on roster. Seems a bit odd.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 As I said in the trade day thread, this is an A for TR. A legit SP (even if he's really a 4/5) for a 4th OF? Wow. Really. Wow.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Hard not to like this move. I mean, Sam Fuld? Getting anything of value for that guy even if it's a 27 year old Kevin Correia redux is a pretty good haul for a fourth outfielder.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Wait, Milone goes to AAA, and the AAA pitchers in MN stay up? What? Downgrade my grade to a B.

It's a long shot better then what happened with Presley earlier. Yeah, I'm all for the move, it was a steal as Fuld was just as likely to turn into a pumpkin, probably even more likely. I don't want him blocking Meyer and May, but really, it's Pino, Johnson, Darnell and Correia blocking them, Milone just adds an extra layer, or extra excuse depending on how cynical one is. I can't stress it enough though, great move, even if I'm not totally sold on the ulitmate consequences.

Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 But until it does happen, it has not happened. Maybe they aren't even keeping Milone? Another possibility. But realistically, there is no way Milone sits in AAA so we can watch the likes of Pino and Darnell pitch in Minnesota. That's absurd. I chalk this up in the "nothing to see here" category. Everything is in flux today and it may take a couple of days for things to settle down.
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Is Milone coming off injury? A short trip to AAA would not be a big deal. I like this move. Santana full time CF here on out. He's still got a lot to work on (like making a catch on that Gordon double last night) but he'll be ok providing he gets on base. Not great but ok.

JB_Iowa Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Darren Wolfson @DarrenWolfson 8m I'm told not to read too much into Milone heading to AAA. Just pitched Tuesday. He'll be w/ the #MNTwins soon.
twinsfan34 Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I like this trade all around. A superfulous 4th OF (maybe even 4th best on our current roster) and Milone, statistically, fits in more about #3 or #4 starter on our staff. Then Vargas coming up...is this just a quick available bat type of thing (e.g. Polanco call up) or does it say something about the impending return or prolonged return of Mauer (1B/DH)? Or is it again, a placeholder as Milone will be up in a few days scenario.
RedBull34 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Author Posted July 31, 2014 He's been in AAA since the A's got Samardzija and Hammel.Good call, I missed that.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 If Fuld is traded, Vargas is coming up to take his place which is why Milone is in AAA for now. Guessing he can be brought up just as soon as a guy like Willingham or KC are traded.
