Top Ten Twins Trade Target

Twins Video

OK I will not have 10, I just wanted to add another "T" word in the Title.  HAHA!!

The eternal optimist can say we are just 1.5 games out of the playoffs right now, but the realist says there is just no way we remain in contention. This of course could make Joe Ryan pure trade bait. Not to mention probably THEE top starting pitcher in the trade market. The Twins should be able to command a top return from any team interested. He should be SO in demand that the twins should actually be the ones approaching other teams. the Twins FO should be the ones driving the ship, determining who we want form other teams and going aggressively to get them.

That being said, who are the Jewels the twins should target? NOTE: this exercise is about targeting ONE primary prospect, not looking for a package deal. That being said any of these trades I would not do 1 for 1 but the prospect mentioned would be the main prize of the deal.

Who would be your one key player to go after?  Here are a few of mine...

1) I am a Fanboy for Sebastian Walcott, I will stump for him anytime.  While injured he is has absolute STAR potential!!  could play on the dirt or transition to the grass. he has legit 30/30 potential. Will it be tough for him to live up to his hype and his tools? possibly, his pure numbers don't wow, but he has consistently played 2+ years younger than league average at each stop including playing at AA at 19.  Rangers are in contention and could use a top arm with Gore and Leiter being average at best.

2) In a role reversal, the Rays could actually be in position to trade FOR pitching!!  Typically known for developing and trading pitching, the Rays are leading the AL East and actually have the best record in all of baseball!!  and they are doing this with only 4 primary starters, and one of them being Steven Matz who has never had a quality full season. adding a proven winner in Ryan would really help solidify the Rays rotation,  Plus the Rays could trade for him now, contend, then trade him away again in the offseason to recoup prospects. SO who is the target with the Rays?  Xavier Isaac. Xavier is not a TOP prospect in the Rays system, but he has a MASSIVE ceiling. some of the biggest power in the minors,  Coming off brain surgery that stopped last year in its tracks he is back and he is mashing at AA Montgomery. Isaac could be a power hitting 1B for the next decade plus in a Twins uniform. more than worth moving Ryan for.

3) Milwaukee Could be an interesting trade partner.  Brewers are back in 1st place despite losing a number of pitchers to injury. Ryan would be the perfect add to improve the rotation, with the added plus of keeping him away from division rival Cubs. One is probably untouchable, but the other could be quite intriguing. The presumably untouchable Jesus Jess Made is a 5 tool player at AA at just 19! Speed to burn a ton of power potential even though he hasn't tapped into it yet. He is the top overall prospect in the game for a reason. You start there and if you have to move down to Luis Pena that wouldn't be a horrible thing. Pena also just 19 at AA. While not the overall prospect that Made is he has massive upside as well. top of the charts speed and above average across the board.

4) Final player(s) on my list.  Either top OF from the Dodgers organization.  lets be accessories to the Dodgers breaking baseball by giving them again the top option on the market. They get Gray and we get either Josue De Paula, or Zyhir Hope. You could say going into the year the Twins had about the deepest OF in the minors, Rodriguez, Jenkins, Gonzalez all knocking on the door. Well Rodriguez continues his injury history. Jenkins has had his own share of missing games due to injury, and Gonzalez has been moved to 1B and not exactly tearing it up in St Paul. De Paula would be the next near ready prospect who could make debut out of spring next year.

So who is your ONE target prospect worthy of moving Ryan for?

Xavier Isaac has a 36% K rate in AA man he won’t even touch an mlb field. Gotta go for one of the top 2 brewers if you’re choosing from these teams

Speculation and hope is always in season. There are a ton of young prospects who will eventually become top pitchers or all stars at their position. Every team is looking for those guys. The problem is most are well beyond reach or not really more likely to make it than the prospects already within the Twins system.

Jesus Made is the top prospect in baseball. If the Twins really wanted to get Milwaukee's attention they would need to offer Joe Ryan, Kaelen Culpepper, and Dasan Hill. Would that do it for the Brewers? Maybe not.

The Twins have a similar player (in some ways), maybe two, to Sebastian Walcott in Yasser Mercedes and Emmanuel Rodriguez. Xavier Isaac hits the ball a ton but has holes in his swing and needs a lot of work to become a decent fielder. Both Isaac and Tre' Morgan are worth discussions though. Neither requires Joe Ryan going the other way. Not sure what Tampa Bay would require but a healthy Ryan Jeffers could bring back one of them. The Dodgers have some fair prospects but I'm not trading Joe Ryan for even two of their guys in the minor leagues, maybe for Andy Pages plus an injured River Ryan.

The Twins have some worthy young pitchers in Taj Bradley, Connor Prielipp, Mick Abel, Zebby Matthews, Kendry Rojas, Andrew Morris, and others working their way up through the system (Dasan Hill, Riley Quick, Charlee Soto, and others). On the position side, all of Walker Jenkins, Kaelen Culpepper, Emmanuel Rodriguez, Eduardo Tait, Gabriel Gonzalez, Marek Houston, and Hendry Mendez have shown promise with hope for others to reach their dream. The Twins need to develop these players.

Trade discussions and acquiring a top prospect is an exciting thought but any trades need to consider that the Twins organization does not really need more filler. Last winter I felt that two teams might be thinking of going all in for 2026 and I proposed trades that were pretty much certain to cause grief for Twins fans and be rejected by the other organizations. Purely guessing I wondered if Detroit would accept Joe Ryan, Charlee Soto, and Royce Lewis for Max Clark. I was willing substitute Emmanuel Rodriguez for Lewis. I also wondered if West Sacramento would find Ryan, Soto, and Lewis (or Rodriguez) a fair return for Leodalis De Vries.

It's always interesting to wonder how a team can acquire a top prospect and we saw that San Diego was willing to trade De Vries and others for Mason Miller. Miller has paid off handsomely thus far. Gamble trades are uncommon.

I absolutely do not trade Ryan for prospects - no matter how high they are rated!  Maybe Ober and a younger pitcher for a top 50 IF prospect with middle-of-the-order potential(probably our biggest need at this moment).  Ryan is one of only 2 or 3 potential starters that might be available in trade this summer - and who would fit in as #1 or 2 in a rotation.   You do not give him up for a prospect, especially with a second season of availability before FA.

Normally, you do not trade your top starter at all, but this is the Twins we're talking about.  They are simply not a contending team this year, nor will this ownership pay $150-200MM for a long term extension.  With some emerging pitching talent seemingly close, and Lopez returning next year, this is the time to be talking to other teams.  If Zoll is not doing this, then we are looking at a Failvey 2.0 here.

The Twins have so many glaring holes now that it is impossible to fill them all, but at least they could maximize their competitive trade advantage by talking to contenders needing rotation help about emerging players who maybe are blocked or who they deem expendable because of strong offenses already.  There are certain candidates that stand out:  Matt Shaw(Cubs);  Caminero(Rays); CJ Abrams(Nats).  The last two names are improbable, Shaw seems more likely.  Any one of these players are likely to immediately bolster the middle of the lineup, as well as defensively.  I'm sure there are other players available, but these  are the types we should aim for.

Shaw can be had for nothing. The Twins don't want Shaw even as a waiver claim. The Rays would not trade Caminero and Abrams is overrated as a shortstop. It is going to be difficult to acquire top talent and it may be necessary for the Twins to just develop their own guys. One player, injured currently and often on the IL in his young career, that may be worth asking about is Jordan Lawler. Change of scenery trade? Maybe Lewis and Wallner for Lawler? Something tells me acquisitions may be tough to do this season.

Strongly disagree on Shaw.  With 13HR, 17SB, and a 3.1 WAR and excellent defense at 3B in his first full season, Shaw has shown excellent potential.  Cubs signed Bregman so Shaw lost his position but has filled in as a utility IF and OF this year.  He is blocked by high $ starters and so would be available.  Not a one for one for Ryan by any stretch, but perhaps for someone like Ober + prospects.  No doubt he would start for the Twins, be a long term addition and could blossom into a middle-of-the-order bat.

Disagreements can be good.

You guys are nuts! If we trade Ryan, we MUST get a package in return- not just 1 suspect. Yes, the teams mentioned could be trade partners but I would take their top suspect and at least 1 additional player. As far as Shaw is concerned, if we can get him for a reasonable price, go do it NOW.

If Ryan is moved I am working out trade with Dodgers for Catcher/1B Dalton Rushing, 25 years old, 30+ HR power.  And he is blocked at catcher with Will Smith signed until 2033.  Would Ryan and Caratini get the deal done?

Ryan is way too much for Rushing.
