Addison Reed couldn't break a wet paper towel with his fastball, so not sure that was really a 'decision.' Parker and the rest of the relievers in The Purge where shown the door later than they should have IMO....Going into last year, one (or perhaps everyone) could argue that Belisle was retained just a bit too long....

Front Page: The Hazy Future of Fernando Romero
D.C Twins replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You nicely articulated the frustration of Romero. I've always gone the old school route of not giving up on a potential #3 starter or higher (sending to the bullpen) until you are sure it won't work out. And I didn't think we were close to that point yet when he was sent to the bullpen (yes he had high pitch counts and was inconsistent but he flashed more potential than Berrios did during his first few MLB tries). That being said, times have changed.... If he had truly developed into a fireman with the ability for 2 shut down innings whenever the opposing team was getting too frisky, none of us would be peering down the retro-spectoscope today. ...and that seemed realistic when the experiment began. If forced, I vote for starter or bust. Some simply have a starter mentality. Plus, we need to know we are not giving up on a great starter before we let him go. If we prove he is not a starter, let him go, and he becomes an above average reliever for a few years down the line....I can live with that but not proving that he is not a reliever only for him to find himself as a starter elsewhere. One last thing...."May, outside of a few hiccups, has been a dominant force." I'm not sure that is how opposing scouts have described him to their teams this year -
In answer to your questions: 1. If chosen today Schoop should be off and the double As (trademark pending) should be on....No scholarships and Schoop is gone next year anyway. We need OBP and defensive substitutions/flexibility (note; this will NOT happen because the FO has a hard time parting with their prospects and FA pick ups) 2. Cave is off. Gonzales and Adrianza (see above choice) can provide OF depth. 3. Astudillo is only needed if there is an injury to Garver or Castro 4. 3 starters and whoever is left (to include starters not in the top 3) who throws the fastest for strikes (yep, sometimes it's just that easy....choose not to go down on walks and give the batter as little time to think as possible)...So yes to Littell and Graterol (and I hope even Alcala) No thanks to Hildy, Harper or any gimicky or soft tossing options.

Front Page: Week in Review: Trouble at Home
D.C Twins replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree with many previous posters on TD that Berrios needs a rest.... I wonder if size doesn't impact durability throughout a season....The prototypical 6'4" 240 pitchers may have better sustainability? He is our only hope for anywhere close to an ACE in the playoffs... Our only other hypothetical playoff ACE opportunity would be a bullpen game with Graterol (3 innings), Alcala (3), Romo (1), Rodgers (2). I'm only 1/2 to 3/4 kidding- 15 replies

Of course you are never promised a successful trade.... but you are also not promised that your prospects are going to be stars....that is why you have to take calculated risks when things are breaking in your favor (ie an 11 game lead in the division). The FO has to make decisions about their current core. If they like Buck and Polanco at CF and SS, then yeah, maybe you do trade Lewis for pitching. I If you think Lewis is a superstar in the making then he should be up in the next 1-2 years then maybe you trade Polanco for pitching help....Same analysis for all the other position player prospects in the minors But the bottom line is that if you want to compete for championships and not sustained above average-ness you have to access well and make hard decisions. And to maximize the current window we need more pitching

Ummm...let's expand our minds to second and third order effects. Minor would have actually plugged in as our acting number 1 while B struggled. One of the starters could have gone to the bullpen and potentially facilitated the dumping of Harper or slowed the AAAA express. Minor actually pitching starting innings (7-9) would prevent over usage of the bullpen at least one day......so it could be inevitably used more on the shorter starts of the other pitchers.....and so on and so on..... I think what you meant to argue is that the Twins really needed was to acquire 2 starters instead of just one at the deadline because 1 may not have been enough so yes...I was incorrect....we should have obtained Stroman and Minor if we were serious (and lets not forget that Stroman did not cost THAT much). Not taking chances at the trade deadline with our top 10 farm system will haunt like walks

.....This is what happens when you hold on to your precious prospects too tight and not get Minor at the deadline. To expand...it is a fallacy to assume that we are entering some 3-7 year window of superiority in the central division just because we have a good young hitting core and Cleveland appears to be close to a reset...... The White Sox have some amazing young talent and there is absolutely a risk that they will slam our window shut abruptly starting the year after next. We should have started going for THIS PAST trade deadline. But unfortunately the Twins model is to strive for extended stretches of above-average-ness to maximize the revenue to cost ratio....not win championships....this will not change unless fans speak through ticket sales. For an example of how fans can take action....see Redskins, Washington

This looks like our playoff bullpen rotation, probably in different orders depending on teams and in game batter match ups. If it holds (pun intended) that would be great. I just really, really, really wanted Minor at the trade deadline and I still really really really want Minor in our rotation now. He would have been huge for us. Would like to know the details of that specific discussion. I think there were intense talks and I suspect they may have held on to their prospects too tight....but we'll never know....

Front Page: The Twins' Three Looming Wild Cards
D.C Twins replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Have a very hard time envisioning Gonsalves going from beginning rehab in mid-August to playing a pivotal role in a new role in the MLB. He doesn't strike a lot of people out and his overall control BB/9 has been...um...less than desirable.... That is the exact opposite that you look for in a relief pitcher...or any MLB pitcher for that matter. The other two ...agreed -
