  1. Nice win. A happy and engaged Carlos Correa might just be emerging after all. As he goes, so go the Twins it appears. Good outing from Lopez once again. How about Michael A. Taylor, on pace for 20 homers? And Castro sure has been a find. @wornsmooththe Twins did strike out quite a bit, including 3 K's in the first inning after a leadoff single. They've struck out 3 times in the 1st inning six times this year.
  2. I liked your comment because I respect you take and you make some great points. That said, having continuously watched this team struggle to score a measly 1 or 2 runs for weeklong stretches, seeing them lead the league in strikeouts and being incredibly incompetent with the bases loaded and RISP, having no veteran leadership, an injury-prone lineup and a handful of untrustworthy bullpen arms, I just can't join in the optimism. I hope you're right and I'm wrong!
  3. I understand. I feel that way currently watching the product on the field. And there's no way that trading for a bat, a bench player and a bullpen arm is going to fix this team in 2022. They need way more than that. No reason to mortgage the future for a team that isn't going anywhere.
  4. Beg your pardon? I agree that Ruiz is an incredible player and would be a welcome addition to the Twins. Or the Yankees. Or the Mets. Or the Orioles. Or the Padres.....you get the idea. He's Oakland's best young player by far and he's going to be a very costly get for whoever goes after him.
  5. The biggest "win" at the deadline will be if the team stays put or sells. There's absolutely no reason to gut the farm system for guys like Trevor Mahle again. The team is far too flawed to have one or two guys come in and fix things, they need at least 5-6 new players on offense starting every day to even remotely be considered a contender. You can't do that at the deadline. Frankly I'd like to see them sell. If they can get something for Polanco, now's the time to do it. If the Twins can still get anything for Larnach, I'd be in favor of doing that as well. And heck, if you're not going to let Buxton play CF, trade him and his team-friendly contract as well for prospects. Or at least consider it and listen to offers. Someone out there would kill to put Bux in CF tomorrow. Get return prospects who can hit and make contact. DFA dead weight like Kep and Pagan (you can't trade what nobody wants) Let Kirilloff, Lewis, and Eddie Julien play every day and bring up guys like Austin Martin and Balazovic for a cup of coffee and see if there's anything there. Clock's ticking on those guys and it's possible they are just blocking other talented players at this point. They should sell because this is a bad team, folks. It's time to stop kidding yourselves.
  6. It really is - and it's worth noting once again that this non-contact type of baseball is extremely difficult to watch. Yes the home runs are great but if this only happens once for every 10 ballgames, it's going to be hard to keep any fans interested. Great win. Let's go for the sweep, put in the A team today Rocco!
  7. Is that 4 straight games scoring 1 run or less? Incredibly anemic, I don't know how anyone could have a remote sense of optimism. Even with Lewis and a healthy Buxton, there's just not enough talent on offense - even when firing on all cylinders. The only good stretches have come when guys like Solano, Farmer, and Castro are playing out of their minds, which is pretty telling. Unfortunate that the FO couldn't ever unstick themselves from the belief that Kirilloff and Larnach were the next comings of Mauer and Morneau. I think most of us saw the writing on the wall 2 years ago but it looks like the front office must have still been expecting that to happen. Don't really know any other way to explain the construction of this team from an offensive standpoint. I'll watch them lose 7-6, but this 2-1 and 1-0 stuff isn't worth staying inside on a beautiful summer night. If anything I hope they sell at the break. A complete teardown is in order. Unfortunately, being in this god-awful division might set them back a few more years.
  8. Howdy ya'll. Game's blacked out tonight on MLB.TV because I'm in the Tampa market, but if I'm being honest I probably wouldn't watch anyway. Just checking in to say that I sure miss the old days of fun baseball, hope you all are doing well!
  9. The good news is that there won't be any Twins games on Apple TV next year, I think they've learned their lesson.
  10. Relax everyone, the Twins have just won 2 games in a row. They have won 3 of 4, which is something. Discouraging to see Bux get hit like that. His season has to be considered a major disappointment thusfar. Can you imagine the 1984 St. Louis DH'ing Ozzie Smith (you know what I mean) or the Cleveland Guardians of the '90s DH'ing Omar Vizquel? The Twins won't let the best defensive player on the team - by far - play defense! I could see maybe DH'ing him in April, but it's June and the guy hasn't played CF yet. Buxton is a streaky hitter who can win games with his glove when his bat is cold. He's also admitted that playing well in the field helps his mental approach at the plate. The decision to turn Byron into a full time DH may just be the most puzzling decision in what's turned out to be a head-scratching career.
  11. I winced when I opened MLB.com this morning, but when I was finally brave enough to open my eyes I couldn't believe it. A truer "getaway day" lineup doesn't exist, yet they went out there and clobbered the 'Stros and took the series. Castro, Solano, Kirilloff and Varland fill up the stat sheet? Would be happy if they could build on this. 5 of the first 6 Twins outs came via strikeout, which is just something that can't continue to happen.
  12. Twins have lost the past four series 2-1 each time. Almost impossible to believe they'll win on the road in HOU tonight. It's essentially a sure bet they'll lose, I wish I had as much hope as you. Royce Lewis isn't going to be able to carry this team by himself, and he's got essentially zero help. By the way, Buxton as a DH only isn't what the Twins signed up for, he's supposed to be a dynamic 2-way player, but he's become a below average 1-way player. When his bat is going bad, he can help with good defense but that's not possible anymore. Real bad situation.
  13. Sadly, that appears to be spot-on. I'm normally a Rocco supporter but I think this mopey, ho-hum schtick is getting a bit old. He'd be a fine manager for a well-oiled machine like the LA Dodgers - just sit back and get out of their way. But he's not built to manage teams that are struggling. I may be wrong, but he doesn't seem like a motivator.
  14. Every time this team gets even the slightest hint of momentum or a spark, it's immediately followed by a lifeless effort. Funny thing was, Correa was supposed to be that guy who brought fire and a passion for winning to this team. Carlos was a dude who gave his all and accepted no less from his teammates - at least that's what I read when he signed with the team. The Twins were getting passion for the game, a winning attitude, hustling, grinding it out - not to mention out of this world talent. Now the dude's as quiet as a mouse, batting .211 with a .600 OPS on a team that's desperately in need of a leader. What the heck happened?
  15. Without Lewis this game ends in a 5-1 loss. He's delivered as advertised when he's been in the majors, let's hope no injuries derail him this time. Great to see him step up, sad that nobody else could do the job. I hope his presence energizes this clubhouse and starts activating the talent in guys like Buxton and Correa!
  16. It's 2022 all over again. Twins slowly sinking, no fire, no life, in an unbelievably winnable division. A few of us are still in denial, concocting wishful ideas like "If Kirilloff and Larnach just string together some good at-bats and stay healthy...." or "When Correa and Buxton heat up this team is going to be dangerous"... Alas, it appears most of us know by now that this is not a very good team and a turnaround is unlikely. We have seen with our own eyes that they're horrible to watch, the offense is incredibly anemic and there's no help in sight. The only "win" we can hope for is that this team doesn't do something horrific like trade Royce Lewis or Brooks Lee for JD Martinez at the break. We can't have any more Trevor Mahle trades that strip the farm system to help a big league club that's clearly not going anywhere. I wish I had more hope, but these past 1.5 years have clearly done a number on my psyche. Reading the rest of these comments I don't think I'm alone. Sad times!
  17. Right? And where the heck did Austin Martin disappear to? This guy was supposed to be the next Darby Swanson but I haven't heard a peep about him lately. He's now 24 years old and the Twins have plenty of holes in the outfield - if Martin was developing on target he'd be the starting center fielder right now and M.A.T. probably wouldn't be on the team. It's another reminder that prospects are NEVER a sure thing, no matter how highly they are ranked. Falvey's "wunderkind" schtick is getting tired. Time to deliver results.
  18. What a great attitude this guy has. If he remains injury free he'll be the clubhouse leader in no time - this team hasn't had one in a while and Royce seems like a guy who can take on that role. Great interview and very nice article @Theo Tollefson! Good job getting Lewis on the horn for a TD piece!
  19. I see no reason why Royce Lewis won't be immediately activated when eligible and immediately placed in the #3 hitting spot.
  20. That's what I'm saying and that's why they get a "D". I know you have to factor in pitching as part of the grade here, but as a TEAM it's incredibly disappointing to see how they're frittering away such solid efforts. If the team were first in runs scored, homers, and OPS, but the pitching was last in ERA and led the league in blown saves, I'd give them a "C". Because at least the losses would be entertaining. The current product is mind-numbingly boring.
  21. This team has two pitchers performing at Cy Young levels. As of May 25th, both Joe Ryan and Sonny Gray are absolutely legit contenders to be awarded best pitcher in baseball. Not only do the Twins have two of the best in the league, they also have Lopez and Ober who have been at least above average, and a shut down closer in Duran who's throwing 104 and is sporting a 1.47 ERA. A definite "A" for the pitching staff! Yet with all that pitching dominance....this team is fighting to stay above .500? Huh? Offense gets an F minus, fundamentals, front office and management all have to be getting Ds or Fs as well. Overall grade: D
  22. I agree that it's possible, I just don't think it's likely. We're not waiting on Aaron Judge, Vlad Guerrero and Juan Soto to come back from injury. We're waiting on Royce Lewis, Jorge Polanco and Max Kepler to come back. Kepler is four years removed from his 2019 breakout year and the Twins have to have considered outrighting him to St. Paul more than once since then. Polanco's a solid player but injury issues are starting to become the norm for him. Lewis should be great but it's impossible to expect anything major from the guy coming back from 2 ACL tears. The Twins only chance is that the BEST version of all three of those guys shows up, Kirilloff puts up 30 homers, Buxton and Correa both bat .260+ with 20+ homers each AND at least one of the Larnach, Farmer, Michael A. Taylor & Nick Gordon bunch plays the remainder of the season solidly above replacement value. While some of those things may happen, I highly doubt that all of them will.
  23. Unfortunately it's the truth. And when they lose 2-of-3 to Toronto that'll be the 4th straight series loss. It's nice to see this victory, but I'm not even remotely convinced this win will help them turn things around. Unreal to look at the numbers on Ryan, Gray, Lopez, Ober, and Duran - and then look at the standings and see a team that's barely treading water at .500. An unforgiveable waste. I don't think anyone can fix this team's hitting problem - at least not in the next 3 months. Twins need an offensive overhaul and that's not coming until the offseason.
  24. Absolutely miserable to watch. I'd rather see a team that can hit go 62-100, while losing games 10-9 or 9-6 on the regular. Instead we're going to have to watch the Twins struggle and wheeze to produce anything on offense on their way to a 75-87 season. Nightmare season, nightmare last few years - especially after signing Buxton, Correa, Pablo Lopez to long term deals and having guys like Joe Ryan and Sonny Gray giving us incredibly solid pitching. To be unable to capitalize on all of the above especially combined with an incredibly wide open window in the division is beyond unacceptable.
