  1. It would have been fun to figure out the money for Brock Porter, but that was a pipe dream. The Twins are obviously trying to find a second Speer with this pick. He doesn't appear to naturally project as an MLB regular. I would have preferred a pitcher, but I don't really have much of an opinion when it gets to this point in the MLB draft. If he has a good hit tool, that's mostly what I care about in hitters.
  2. Before everyone goes nuts thinking the Twins got a top ten player at 48, keep in mind there are real reasons why each team passed on him at least once. Best bet is that he's more likely at a pick 48 level than a pick <20 level. There's obvious upside, and so it seems a lot more reasonable to be hopeful than gleeful.
  3. I wanted Holliday and Druw Jones above all others, but I had Lee 3rd. The Twins have had consistently poor ABs since Mauer's prime, with only Arraez really tough against good pitching. The Twins need more tough outs in the system. As for catching, it would take four years at least for Parada to be good. And he likely would be, but the Twins can address this potential need in other ways. I take the guy with an outstanding hit tool who rarely strikes out (at least in college, fwiw).
  4. Once I saw you tried to mislead by truncating you chart endpoints, I couldn't actually read. That's a no-no. Your charts implies far more variation than there is, and variation is what the argument is based on (always).
  5. At this point he looks like a utility infielder, a backup shortstop due to lack of hitting. And honestly, that's the role of most shortstops (who stick) drafted where the Twins took Miller. Fort Myers is a notorious pitcher's park, and the FSL is a pitcher's league, so we might excuse him through this year, but if he doesn't put up pretty stats in Cedar Rapids next year, I think we're looking at utility. Think Jace Peterson.
  6. Rogers is hurt. Not sure how it's manifesting itself (velocity, command, movement, tipping), but it's clear he hasn't recovered from his injury.
  7. Um, Garlick is a part of Twins plans the next few years if he can stay on the field. What he does vs lhp is very rare, and you probably don't have the baggage of the hitter thinking he's better than every third day. The Twins love him. He'll be super-two arb eligible this year and a free agent at the end of 2026. I would sign him each year until it proves to be a mistake. I'm not sure Falvine can avoid giving him an unnecessary Dobnak-like contract.
  8. Soto got the call because it was temporary. Obviously you wouldn't call up Kirilloff just to demote him (or DFA him!). My guess is 1) Kirilloff needs to show it longer because he's already been gifted a lot, and they don't need him breaking down in MLB again, and/or 2) they're keeping him down long enough to get beyond super two status, and/or 3) they're showcasing Larnach for trade. Larnach for Castillo as the trade basis makes some sense and shouldn't hurt the Twins. It's probably a combination of all three, somewhat.
  9. They do resemble one another in that they seem to be able to control where they hit the ball (when inclined). Both Carew and Arraez look for openings and have an uncanny knack for hitting them. That and the supreme knowledge of the strike zone are the two things I see as the same.
  10. Martin and Miller is a small price. Miller is five years away and Martin is both bad and not a shortstop. Oh, and there's a good chance Miller is never more than utility/backup. I don't even know who we're talking about, but if we get Montas for that, I'm happy.
  11. Well, you're looking at some of this from really only Minnesota's POV and not thoroughly at that. Odorizzi was a decent pitcher for the Twins, but what could they have done with the money saved? Likewise, TB knows exactly what it wants to do with its $$$. My guess is that while they struck out on Palacios, they were probably better for not having Odorizzi. Plus, if they could have gotten someone better than Palacios (at the time) they would have. Twins would maybe have "won" this if they hadn't given Odo $18 million, but only because the original dollars on Odo's contract would have probably not gone to good use. Cruz for Ryan? That was, to the Twins, nothing for Ryan. You can't really mess this up at this point. I was upset at the package we gave for Jepsen. I'm still ranting about Garza/Bartlett for Delmon. One of worst, least-researched trades ever.
  12. Is Austin Martin the Twins' best trade chip? If "best trade chip" means crappiest player you've heard of, then yes. If you think other teams would take him as the major part of a trade, you're dreaming. That's what the Twins did. They didn't do their homework, and now there's no hiding how bad he is.
  13. Rocco has a lot of inferior relievers to choose from. How does he even decide which to choose? This whole argument is basically a hindsight one. Yeah, yeah, you're convinced Duffey sucks, you knew it, and it proved out. Congrats. But basically this is a problem of having a whole team of relievers who suck and a front office who did the opposite of noticing or fixing it. Joe Smith and Pagan? These are your guys? Both are also sucking right now, if you haven't noticed, and they will/would suck a lot more against the Yankees. You have one reliever, and you want to bring him in in a game you're already down to the Yankees? So that you can stay close while they bring in their 0.35 ERA guy? There are pots you give up at the table as part of your overall meta-game strategy. Plus, in Duffey's case, it either works or you have all the info you need to pull the plug.
  14. Probably late to a party here, but they're not keeping Miranda up because he can play 1B. Well, they are, because they need someone while Lewis learns all the positions he might play, which is not going to happen in the majors. Guessing Urshela might be taking reps for 1B at the major league level. Nothing worse than throwing a guy out there in MLB who's never gotten any experience at the position. It's as simple as that. He'll be down for a few games at each position, and they'll get him back up here. You think the Twins don't know who's more major league ready? Think they're confused? Or is it a conspiracy?
  15. What are you talking about? I'm sure someone's addressed this, but it doesn't matter how much Lewis plays this year. The Twins will have him for this year and six more. The same with Miranda, except if he doesn't get it, he could be in the minors next year, too. Nothing in any decision-making the last few days has anything to do with service time. And for gawd's sake, Correa will not be here next year. Please stop with this, everybody. But even if the Twins trade for Lindor, Lewis will still play the full year next year.
  16. Is there really any reason to not bring up Sonny Gray now rather than give him a start with the Saints? He pitched Sunday, he's going to go 4-5 innings...why not for the Twins? I suppose they don't want to expose him to what could be a Covid-ridden clubhouse, but pitching him Saturday in St. Paul makes him unavailable until Thursday.
  17. Dave Benz is the worst play by play announcer I've ever heard*. The only "respect" the duo gets is due to Petersen. (Frankly, even he was difficult to listen to this year with his huge bias and complaints about the officiating) *Temporarily forgot about John Gordon. Neither did the basic job of describing the action.
  18. If he's just an unknown in the system, you'd be right to not worry. But he's a top draft pick who was ranked around 20 on the initial prospect lists. He's making contact, but his exit velocities have been the lowest of any player on any top 100 list. Frankly, unless that gets figured out, you don't have anything. He's not going to be walked in the majors if throwing it down the middle doesn't hurt you. There's no value there as it stands now. Super glad you're not worried. 23 at AA is not horrible, but it's also not indicative of a future division 1 player when he's not pounding the ball there. The Twins need to figure out what's wrong with him, or he's a non-factor in the Berrios trade. Bringing up his position questions is like questioning troop placements in Hiroshima. My online baseball group (none of them but me Twins fans) simply think he's no good, and some have held that thought from his college days. I try to argue something has to be wrong, but it's not a winning argument.
  19. Thanks! Old complaint: we won't be able to follow CES because he's not Top 20 in your book. New complaint: You have the order of Cedar Rapid and Fort Myers wrong (I assume you're trying to go AAA, AA, A+, A). Thanks for the update!
  20. He's hurt. He's hurt. He's hurt. And the Twins deal with his type of injury waiting forever to eventually get TJS. For this reason along, it's not a good trade. They best test him at AAA, get an extra year of service from him, and maybe have him healthy by 2025. Thumbs up, Twins.
  21. Oof. For now anyway, but wait until Paddack recovers from his second TJS surgery to lead the Twins out from under the worst record in MLB in 2024 so the Twins can avoid the first few draft picks in 2025 and select another right-handed hitting college first basemen. "We almost had it right with Aaron Sabato" stated recently demoted Derek Falvey, while an angry-looking Jim Pohlad looked on. Seriously, Paddack has a UCL tear. This better be a helluva PTBNL.
  22. I just skimmed the article, but, um, Urshela was hurt last year. I wouldn't expect him to put up numbers equivalent to playing in the Yankee bandbox stadium, but if he's healthy, he'll be fine. And I have to believe he'll be a better fielder than Donaldson, whose fielding acclaim was based much more on reputation than reality
  23. You ain't lying. It's disappearing. A testament to Falvine's inability to evaluate hitting prospects. Don't be surprised in the future if the names that pop up prominently are acquisitions from other systems.
  24. One thing is clear after ten years of watching Buxton: he must totally suck at basketball.
