  1. Yeah I'm not arguing that Gray isn't a good pitcher. You're right, and I'm not hoarding prospects here, I just don't think acquiring all 5 of your opening day starters via trade in a 2-3 year period is exploiting untapped value. To me it signifies a lack of development and a rigid approach to FA which is why I don't think we should celebrate it.
  2. Gordon has been bad, but he's not a journeyman 35 year old who can't play anywhere defensively. It's not a tough choice for me either.
  3. Solano has a .615 OPS vs. LHP this year. There's zero reason he should be taking away ABs from Kirilloff simply because he stands in the right side batters box.
  4. He's had a great start; it's also May 16th. The Twins had to ship off a 1st round draft pick for two seasons of Gray. If value is the priority, I'm skeptical that controllable talent for short term rentals is the best way to find it. Then there's the whole sustainability issue to boot. Not sure where I was whining about ace pitching.
  5. If it's only "a few bad weeks," pulling his WAR below zero, what was he prior to that? Replacement level? I mean c'mon.... Only Gordon, Alcala, and Miranda have been worse amongst the regulars, and 2 of those 3 have been demoted.
  6. He's worth negative WAR after 32 games, that's not "fine for most of the season."
  7. Varland has 49 career innings, and he's sitting at a 5.13 FIP right now. Ober is one more extended IL stint away from serious bullpen consideration. Those are the developmental hits? Ryan is the only swap that sticks out as "value," and it took a TSF 2.0 for that deal to become a reality. The constant need to trade for short term pitching solutions isn't something I'd celebrate. There will always be a rationale for why moves are made, that doesn't mean those decisions were the right ones, i.e. it's entirely fair to evaluate these swaps based on how they work out.
  8. I wouldn't put any stock in postseason odds on May 15th. I'd bet MN had pretty high postseason odds on June 1st last year, and then they played 3 months of sub .500 ball before completely collapsing. Right now MN and Cleveland almost mirror each other as far as pitching and offense (or lack thereof) go. The wildcard is of course health.
  9. This is the correct answer. The AL Central is a dumpster fire. I'd take it a step further and say win a playoff series, even if it's a 3 vs. 6 WC matchup; just win an entire series. I'll still cringe if we're sitting here in October celebrating a series loss because the longest losing streak in NA sports has been broken.
  10. Yes, it's constantly brought up as some kind of aww shucks type of defense. Even this article has the obligatory "thank god we didn't trade for Montas," paragraph where Castillo is a mere footnote. Failed development, an overreliance on awful FA SP signings, and trading for a SP with an injury red flag all preceded the move for Mahle last year. Then there's the issue, which has already been stated, of trading for another starter with injury concerns at the deadline. It feels like there are layers of poor decision making here.
  11. Which is why framing this discussion as "Montas, Mahle, or nothing," is so irritating.
  12. I'll take the run, it's desperately needed, but holy moly why is Darvish nibbling on the mound? The Twins are one of the worst hitting teams in baseball and the minute he decides to attack it's two Ks and inning over.
  13. Yeah, I wouldn't be rushing to extend him; I don't think the potential talent/performance payoff is worth the risk.
  14. Is Farmer going to hit though? .226/.286/.355 and a K% rivaling Gallo doesn't feel like an upgrade.
  15. Precisely why he wouldn't be my choice to remove from the 26 man. Farmer isn't going to solve any offensive issues, especially if he's going to be facing RHP as the everyday 3B. Castro and Solano serve little purpose now, or in the future. I would've happily waived goodbye to one of them.
  16. Yeah I'm definitely not against a small reset while staying on the active roster. I don't think going to AAA provides much personal benefit, but if he is actively hurting the team's chances of winning games (and you can easily argue that he is) I understand the move. If Miranda is viewed as a middle of the order bat down the road, ideally he works through his struggles against ML pitching and we aren't crossing our fingers on a placeholder being serviceable, but it is what it is I guess.
  17. We're actually worried about hanging around in the AL Central? Really? KC is challenging Oakland for the title of worst team in baseball. Is Detroit a real threat over 162 games? Chicago tanked their season in April. It's MN and Cleveland, and for as much as we bitch (rightfully so) about the Twins offensive struggles, Cleveland is probably worse. This is a really bad division, and barring a collapse a la MN last year, or Chicago last month, nobody is likely running away with it. A decent 6 weeks and some .500ish ball might be all it takes to claim the division crown.
  18. Yeah I never once thought he looked dominant during the game. He threw nearly 100 pitches, and only about half of them were strikes. He was giving up more than 1 hit per inning coming into the game; couple that with his control issues and it's unreal that a team would only threaten to score in two times in seven innings.
  19. Count me amongst those not exactly excited about the idea of Kyle Farmer playing 3B every day. I get it, kind of, but he barely posted more than 1 fWAR in 145 games last year, and he wasn't off to a particularly great start this season despite being platooned in more favorable matchups. His defense at the corner maybe raises the floor a little, but he's not going to step onto the diamond and make the Twins a better team. SSS yada yada, and if you told me he holds down 3B with average-slightly below average play for 6 weeks until Lee is called up, ok I guess, but I'd still give Miranda a bit more time facing major league pitching.
  20. Master-class pitching duel is probably overstating it a bit. Cleveland is arguably the worst offensive team in all of baseball right now, and the Twins struggles are well documented. Quantrill is an incredibly hittable pitcher, and he lacked command for a good part of the game this afternoon.
  21. It's a philosophical disagreement. I wouldn't feel any differently if it had been the Twins imploding in the 12th yesterday; you shouldn't either.
  22. We should probably mention the fact that Lopez was even worse after moving to lower leverage last season. That's pretty important if we're comparing the two right? No, not for me. Lopez didn't pitch well for the Twins last year, that's really not debatable. I want more than a nice April before I'm handing him the ball over Duran. Yes, having even one more AB, i.e. an opportunity to score an extend the game, makes that a very different situation. A clean 8th inning with another chance to hit guaranteed isn't remotely the same as starting the 10th with a runner on 2nd and the game set to end if that runner scores. I'm happy to see other relievers attempt to get outs if Duran's appearance extends the game, which it potentially would've in that 10th inning. If Duran comes in as a fireman in the 7th or 8th, ok. If he had thrown the 9th inning when it was prevent a run or go home, ok. I do (did if we now know Duran wasn't available) think Rocco made a mistake not inserting what I view as his best bullpen weapon. Misplays happen all the time over the course of a game; there's no point in fixating on one decision, or pinning the loss on an individual.
  23. Duran was elite from start to finish last year, so yeah, that carries more weight for me. I've never once said Lopez was terrible, again, you need to stop building arguments that aren't there. If you want to tell me that the hierarchy has flipped this year after 13 innings ok; I couldn't agree less. Because the Twins have 2 ABs left after the 7th? This isn't rocket science. They knew going into the bottom of the 10th that the game was over if Chicago scored. Those situations aren't remotely the same. I get that there's an inordinate amount or Rocco criticism on TD, but not all critiques are "blaming Rocco for screwing it up," or on par with the "Rocco sucks," theme echoed across every game thread. I never once pinned the loss on him; don't reduce my posts to that.
  24. If you want to put more stock into 13 innings than all of last year don't let me stop you. Michael Taylor is sitting at 3rd on the team in HRs, and his OPS is higher than Correa or Miranda's; are you going to crusade for him jumping into the middle of the lineup? If Duran is available in a close game, yes, I do want him to pitch. Is that not obvious by now? This isn't difficult, you don't need to muddy the waters here. Don't forego the chance to play your best card, i.e. your best shot at extending the game, and then get knocked out. Oh is this the part where I set parameters and then you pick nits and pull some gotcha BS? I'll pass... More hyperbole? Does this ever start to wear you out? Other pitchers will obviously be used in close games. Duran is the best option (particularly in that 10th inning) hence my desire to him to be used late in a tie game a la last night. Rocco literally used Duran in the 9th inning of a tie game two weeks ago, but I guess he's not "all managers?" Idk...
  25. C'mon, stop with the stawman stuff; Duran is unquestionably their best relief option, and nobody is asking for him to throw every close game. I know there was an availability qualifier involved. It isn't the only way, but it's the best way to give yourself a shot at another inning. The bullpen is doomed is they have to hide Pagan, Moran, and Winder over 162 games; that doesn't mean I want those guys throwing important innings if better options are available. And they likely would've gotten another chance in the 11th, but apparently it's more desirable to save your best bullet for a hypothetical situation, use a lesser arm, and lose in 10 innings.
