  1. A questionable character player on the White Sox? Seems like a great fit.
  2. Chris Herman has bounced around waivers. I can't remember his most recent stop was Houston or if there's another.
  3. Texas also signed Tonkin to a minor league deal. His numbers in Japan weren't good. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/01/rangers-sign-michael-tonkin-reliever-japan-npb.html
  4. I want to believe that Molitor bp management played a bit role, overusing some arms 'til they fell off and ignoring others... but we'll see. Maybe some of these pitchers are just really streaky. Both Rogers and Hildenberger have had excellent half-seasons two years in a row now.
  5. RP don't get paid enough, do they? I'd argue that Rogers is worth more to this team than half the others on this list.
  6. Maybe similar to Felix last year, this front office seems to try to sneak players through after injury-marred seasons. It's not a bad philosophy, especially with fringe 40-man roster players.
  7. My thoughts, too (almost). I'd swap Kepler and Cron. I might even push Schoop to 8th or 9th if he hits like he did last year.
  8. I like that he's already been tested an shown the ability to overcome adversity. Oh, and his pitching stuff.
  9. I suspect these players would net...Brian Duensing.
  10. Austin was worth a half-year of Lance Lynn's worst. I don't think other teams are champing at the bit for his skill set. He's shown promise, but I view him as expendable. I am curious about the 40-man move they'll make. Granite makes sense to me. While Granite's skills serve a role on a 40 man roster, he's also coming off a terrible season. Now is the time to try to drop him if they're going to.
  11. Easy. Cron? 1b Sano? 3b Austin? bench or aaa if he clears waivers Rooker? aa Garver? bench
  12. So because Meyer "wasn't terrible" some 5 years after the trade, no player should ever sign with the Twins? Meyer was terrible with the Twins MLB team during his cup of coffee, he wasn't good in Anaheim either, and he's had repeated health concerns dating back to before his time in the Twins organization.
  13. It's interesting to me how many people complain when threads go off on the business side of MLB, yet we refer to players as assets. (Sadly, they are. Come to think about it, I wish my employer would call me that...)
  14. That increase in value doesn't do them any good unless they sell the team.
  15. I wouldn't think of giving Kinsler a multi-year deal at this point in his career.
  16. This timeline would be more useful if it didn't include concussion-related recovery. A brain injury will have a different protocol than one of conditioning. That said, no, I see no double standard. Different injuries require different treatments and follow-through. Quality medical treatment will treat everyone differently based on their own history and concerns. Plus, treatments and employer responses are constantly changing, so comparing past to present is irrelevant. (Mauer also returned form bilateral leg weakness and won an MLB award. Sano was demoted to A-ball after his leg injury.)
  17. What does "team quality" mean in his context? Here, it sounds like it refers to clubhouse culture, but I'm connecting it to the Schoop blurb...perhaps just in my head.
  18. Agreed. Except that I've felt that way every off season for the past 5 years when he's been a FA and it's never happened yet.
  19. I'm just responding to your description without fighting the Strib paywall, but there's a big difference between not doing much at the winter meetings vs. not doing much for the whole offseason.
  20. I think those comments about mercenaries are still relevant. The key last year as how many of those contracts they had. One or two isn't a big deal, but they add up fast. I think it also depends on circumstances. As others have said, Schoop likely wants a one year deal to rebuild value (somewhat similar to Donaldson) whereas Lynn and Morrison where players who had perceived higher value and found something else on the market.
  21. I fully expect the Twins to carry two backup infielders. They have every year as long as I can remember.
  22. I agree with 90% of what you're saying here. Really, it feels that we're just debating the meaning of a word, which I don't understand because it's already defined by the dictionary. Anyway, I like Ehire. I'll end my piece there because otherwise we're just going in circles and it seems like we mostly agree.
  23. What is the main point that we're disputing? Is it just the definition of a "backup"? I'm not sure I follow. It would be great to have 25 all-stars on the roster who all got an equal piece of the pie. Realistically, no player who believes himself to be "starting caliber" is going to want to sign with a team as the 25th man on the roster (especially in MN, maybe in NYY). I think that's an unrealistic expectation. Many pro players would rather be a starter on a last place team than a non-starter on a World Series contender.
  24. This isn't football. There are only 9 positions and if you don't start, you don't play. Sometimes it takes a headache before Wally Pipp gets the day off.
  25. Except these are people and it's not that simple. It also has to be a player willing to be a backup and one who can perform off the bench, on a moment's notice, often while cold. Most player's who are "good enough to be a starter" want to be starters, not sign in Minnesota to sit on the bench and pray for a teammate's injury, illness, or suspension. Most player's who excelled their whole young lives until MLB have never sat on the bench at all.
