    No thank you. I don't even want Wade or Turtle on the 26-man roster. They're both fine as 27th-man depth. I'm also of the philosophy that $8million is nothing in MLB money, especially on a one-year deal. Sign pitching and keep him. Why gamble when you can get a relatively sure thing at a set cost? But I won't be crestfallen if he's gone, either.

    While these stats are interesting and should influence any trade talks, probability isn't the only thing to consider. Salary and control are huge influences, which inflate the value of prospects a little more.

    Do you have stats on this? I feel like there are more 35+ catchers in the league than most other positions...maybe RP. I would agree that very few elite hitting catchers stay at that position into their 30s. But the majority of back-up, glove-first catchers in the league, the Mike Redmonds (not sure he was glove-first, but you get the point) and Tom Princes and Drew Buteras of the world, seem to play forever.

    This is smell test, not based on data, but I don't think Perez has the control to be effective in the pen. I suppose the day of the LOOGY is over, but I still don't want to make a BP call with 2-runners on and have the next batter draw a walk.

    I hate to see people losing jobs, traditions, and community-focused organizations, but I do think it makes sense for MLB to cut some of the bloat. Live events still thrive compared to other TV, but in the media landscape of the next generation, I think all sports are going to become more niche-audience and less mainstream. It would be wise to plan ahead. That's just a personal prediction, though. I'll leave it to the accountants. The current, extensive minor league system as it stands is fascinating in how unique it is among pro sports.

    I think they have to protect anyone they sent to the AFL...otherwise, it was a showcase for other teams. That seems like a strange lack of strategy.

    That's a very literal reading, but it is factually correct. But it's only been 11 months since he signed, under the same front office and management. What you see as a vote of confidence in the young bats, I see as a message to the league (e.g. future free agents) that "we don't stand by our commitments" and "we don't have a plan so we're making it up as we go along." As an employee, I would see actions like this to be a serious red flag that it's not a great employment opportunity. Most players want security when they sign free agent contracts as much as they also want to win.

    I think it's pretty obvious that a player signing a one-year contract with an non-competitive team has different expectations of their contract than the scenario we're discussing. I've also only heard that idea thrown about on messageboards. I don't hear players and GMs saying it. Off the Cruz topic and onto the trade perspective, it's anecdotal, but I've read dozens (if not hundreds) of interviews of pending free agents saying they're excited to finally be in control of their careers. It's reasonable to assume that means they'd be unhappy if that sense of control is taken away by an immediate trade.

    Signing a free agent and then flipping them is a good way to make other free agents not want to sign with your team.

    Any trade of Kepler would have to include a plan for a backup CF, given Buxton's history. I don't want Cave out there for more than 30 games.

    If he'd make the team I'm all for it. Based on the original post, I'm not sold he's an improvement or has that high of a ceiling. That said, the arguments I'm reading here that say "trade our prospects for a prospect...because we have too many prospects..." has me scratching my head.

    I expect $120-$140, depending what they do with extensions. If there are extensions, I could see 2020 being a bit lower in preparation for future years taking the hit. So your $130 estimate falls right in the middle of that and I agree.

    I'm all for a 26 person roster. The other rules seem...unnecessary, like rules for the sake of rules to me. As the NFL has shown, more rules tends to mean more disputes. But time will tell.

    Thanks for the contributions so far, but no thank you. Gibson-level production is valuable to a team over 162+ games. But to me it's worth arbitration price, not the price of a free agent contract.

    This feels like a very short-term, win-now move. Except I'm not sure it helps them win-now either.

    All position players, or is a companion piece coming (that I missed)?

    I'd like to see the defense improve, but I don't think moving players to new positions means that they will suddenly be better (at positions they've rarely played). I'd give the current core 1-2 more years to hopefully improve, then revisit position changes as the SS prospects hit The Show.

    I'm sold. As long as we end up with Sano in RF.

    Front-loaded deals sound good on paper, but since nobody does it, I have to assume there are more downsides. One was mentioned above. I imagine there are significant tax differences too. Not all $100 million contracts equal the same amount.
