  1. Agreed. Which is why I don't get many of the "sign a veteran and flip him" arguments about mediocre players still available in free agency. Sign them to help the team in the present, sure. Cut 'em even, but don't fool yourself into thinking you'll get a good return in a trade.
  2. If he can pinch run too, I'd say he's competition for DSan.
  3. If they keep changing the format, 75 wins might get them into the playoffs.
  4. It teaches "dealing with change"? (It's probably just branding.)
  5. I fear the team might be even worse than last year.
  6. Personal trainers, not team trainers. There's a difference.
  7. I don't like how he worded it either, but there's no reason why he should be expected to talk to Sano in the offseason. I don't want my boss calling me on my day off.
  8. If trading for prospects they should take the best players available, regardless of position. They can worry about who to pencil into the 2019 MLB lineup in 2019 without worrying about the depth chart yet. Injuries and position changes will take care of that with time. That said, they need MLB pitching. (Or MLB ready by mid-season.) (I'm also not a big fan of trading Dozier, but it all depends. I understand why it makes sense but that doesn't mean I have to like it.)
  9. I don't love the 3rd year, but you always overpay in free agency.
  10. I'll believe the multiple innings theory when I see it in practice. I think it's more of a postseason strategy and playoff run than something teams will do April-July.
  11. Except they've hopefully given a correct diagnosis this time after essentially not treating his injury until August or September last year. In other words, it might not have been BP duty, it may have just been that he was never healed in the first place.
  12. If Johan will consider being a LOOGY I'm open minded.
  13. Is Garver/Murphy a safe enough back-up plan for if Soto?
  14. If they platoon at any position, it seems like C is the easiest unless there's a pitcher-catcher bond to mess with.
  15. If Rosario can't learn to take a walk it's hard to see him improving. He doesn't have to be a "patient" hitter, but his walk rate would be comical if he wasn't on my team.
  16. I feel like more of the AL is moving in the Twins direction here, using DH as a "half day off" for regulars instead of carrying a mediocre bat. Of course an Ortiz is nice, but the majority of DHs are not that level. I see no issue with a player taking 80-120 games while rotating through everyone else.
  17. I'm fine with him as a 6th inning guy, but those relievers are dime a dozen. If he's cheap, keep him through arbitration. If they cut him lose, so what. Tonkin is why I read K/9 and mph numbers with a grain of salt.
  18. Sano's arm is injured. I wouldn't read too much into 3B this August-September. If it continues next May-June, yes.
  19. Possibly very true, but even so, to retire with a stat line like Tommy Watkins is something.
  20. Escobar is a borderline starter/utility player. Which is the best kind because he'll give a manager options and push other players to compete more. When the inevitable injury occurs you don't have to say "oh, Denny Hocking is starting for the next 15 days." Play him when he's hot, sit him when he's not.
  21. That clarifies. I think a "Strasburg type ace" would take way more than Dozier. Do I think 2 maybe 3 Top 100 prospects could be acquired for BD, yes. But not a top 5 and probably not a top 10. Maybe it's a selfish fan thing, but I'd rather see BD hitting in the 1-5 slot of the lineup for 2 more years than to get another Meyer type when there are a few #2-3s already in the system. I'm not 100% opposed, but it's a preference. If BD only had 1 year left on contract I would likely say yes. We already have Escobar and Polanco hitting 5th or 6th instead of 7th-8th. I'd rather not bump them up another spot.
  22. There are a lot of different subjects in this thread, but I really don't see teams trading potential aces these days. You have to develop that within or get lucky on an unexpected player making a jump. Otherwise, it's likely highway robbery for a low level prospect with a 50% shot at success. That may be worth it for some players (Span) but I don't think it is for Dozier.
  23. After the past 2 years I'm less convinced than everyone else that a prospect will suddenly perform at a high level upon call-up. Polanco has hit so far in a SSS. That, plus Polanco has positional flexibility and is getting plenty of at bats now. After literally decades of futility in the middle IF, why trade the second there's a third capable player in the mix. If anything, I'd still look to move Escobar and cross my fingers that Polanco can be near league avg at SS defensively. What risk? The risk that you trade a quality starting 2B for an Alex Meyer who can throw hard, but little else.
