  1. To me, Bert doesn't even want to talk about the live game. Mostly just repeat tired jokes and talk about himself. He's surprisingly okay on national games on Fox, where he tones it down and talks baseball. But it's been clear to me, for years, that he's just phoning it in on Twins games.
  2. I disagree. Compared to other sports, yes. But it's still a very different medium and the pacing is essential on radio. It's a craft. TV is...less craft, more narration.
  3. I wish him the best, but I'm not sure a fly ball pitcher will succeed in those environments.
  4. Eh, keep 'em doing what they're good at. I want Provus on radio.
  5. If Cave is out of options, I'd say he's guaranteed a spot at this point. He's been extremely hot/cold and I don't like his strikeouts (or defense, though that's more fixable). If he can hit as a role player, he's an okay piece on the bench. If he plays like last April-May, then no thank you.
  6. It's too soon for another player named Dyson.
  7. MLB Trade Rumors front page today is a fascinating look at the Twins then-and-now.
  8. Good teams often led players go after team control expires. It's one of the most difficult parts of maintaining a successful roster. When the current core hits that point, they can only afford to keep maybe half. I would let a quality corner OF go into free agency almost every time. Production is easier to replace at that position. Of course, I also think Eddie's personality is a big part of this team. But we have 1-2 years to figure that out.
  9. While the only way for a team (not in LA or NY) to get an ace is to develop one, I think this is probably the best move. 1) I'm not sold that he has enough pitches to be an effective starter yet. 2) As another poster already say, we kept waiting for Meyer and Romero to build up their innings levels too. If it hasn't happened by the time he reached AAA, it's not a sign it's going to happen. 3) In an era of Andrew Miller, Josh Hader, and openers, there are more opportunities for innings. In theory, he could throw 70-90 IP as a reliever instead of the 50-60 standard of a few years ago.
  10. On that end, I do dislike the use of the DH in the minor leagues. The minor leagues are about development. They should have pitchers develop all the aspects of their game that are relevant to playing MLB ball.
  11. I think it's interesting how many people dislike watching pitchers bat, in an era where we have more potential 2-way players than the league has seen in years.
  12. I love the NL game, but I also like that the two leagues have different rules. If they were the same...why bother with 2 leagues in the first place? I'm not a fan of interleague play, though. I'd rather go back to old days of even play among all AL teams (for the Twins) instead of interleague + divisionally weighted.
  13. Good teams have good depth and back-ups. This is exactly what you want, and it forces a prospect to be ready when the call-up finally comes. See A.J. Pierzynski and Doug Mientkiewicz for examples. See Aaron Hicks and Byron Buxton for players who don't have anybody "blocking" them.
  14. I'm curious how teams will use the 26th spot. Will it be the best 26 players, or will it benefit role players like defensive or speed specialists? The LOOGY rule seems to mean it won't be for a specialist pitcher.
  15. The notion that it's not a team game and that every facet doesn't matter is equally ridiculous. I didn't say "the Twins would have won if Sano caught that ball." I said "two innings would have gone differently."
  16. I remember at least 2 sharp doubles down the 3B line that went for extra bases instead of killing Yankees rallies. I also remember NYY making 1-2 of those plays on their side of the ball.
  17. Definitely. I don't want to go off-topic, but other contenders have signed a lot of versatile 10th men this year. I'm guessing last year's Twins are part of the inspiration. All around, this team is positionally flexible when there is an injury. Sano, Arraez, Gonzalez, Adrianza, Kepler, Cave...
  18. I think it's telling that the Berrios case is about $.5m, yet many people are saying "what's another $10m to Donaldson?" It might feel like play money to us, but it's very real. I also expect it to be resolved, unless the Twins front office wants another arbitration case to set precedent.
  19. He can play RF when they trade Rosario for an ace
  20. If he "settles" for MN, I hope it doesn't turn into a mopey Lynn or Nolasco situation. But for this kind of $, I wouldn't think so. He's also not a pitcher. Everything we've read here is speculation, which doesn't really tell you how a person feels.
  21. I could see a 1 year placeholder signing like these names, with the option to dump them if a prospect is ready. The 26th roster spot may allow for that. But I also expect a steady rotation between the IF and C. With Garver, Gonzalez, Adrianza, Arraez, and Austudillo also capable of playing multiple positions, I think we'll see a lot of that. They could simply rotate who plays at 1B and 3B in a rotation to keep everyone fresh. Then let Gordon, Rooker, and Kiriloff push their way onto the roster.
  22. Signing two pitchers (Pineda and Hill) who will miss the start of the year is an interesting approach. I'd rather finish strong than start strong, I guess. You can't have too much depth. Bailey. Ug. But on a 1 year deal who cares.
  23. It's an interesting idea, but I don't think it makes sense. He's a good player, but I don't view him as a different maker, rather more of a Cuddyer type. If that's their approach, they could've kept Cron for $6-7mil.
  24. The problem with a bunch of lottery tickets is that the pitcher who makes the best impression in March probably isn't the best pitcher in July. Isn't that how the Twins let Anibal Sanchez get away? I don't exactly regret that move, as it seemed like the right thing at the time. But ST is difficult to assess a project/comeback-type player and you can only dedicate so many roster spots to that type of thing (as a contender).
