Over the past 3 years, most on TD seem to predict Romero as an ace-type. Most scouts have put him as a #4 or a reliever. We have a tendency to get attached to our prospects.
While I don't think they acted enough on RP, I disagree with the premise that they were relying on Romero magically saving things. In fact, I don't think they're big fans of his given how they used him so far.
While I think saves are overrated, I'm not opposed to a closer. I just don't think it has to be the best pitcher on the staff. Rodney has made a career of it, and Guardado had a good run. I'm a fan of that philosophy. Basically, find an above average arm with that mysterious personality trait to forget about their bad games quickly and move on. I'm also totally fine with the committee situation at the moment. It'll sort itself out, just like the many other questions on this team.
And Thome wasn't much of a DH. He could still hit with the best of them, but he was a serious roster liability. He couldn't run, at all. He played about 6 innings per game before the pinchrunner took over, and he couldn't play 3 days in a row. imo, he was more of a bench piece than a DH. But you're right. It's been rare.
I'm intrigued because he's a lefty and they generally hold up better with lower velocity, etc, but after watching last year's late signings I'd be extremely hesitant.
I assume he'd either need a "legit" injury, or to accept a minor league assignment to stay at extended ST> They could, of course, discuss that assignment issue in contract negotiations.
How do you figure? 2 years ago everybody on this board was in a huffy because Polanco was getting reps in AAA at 2B instead of SS. That sounds like a move for the future to me.
I understand the sentiment, but that's exactly what you trade a fringe 40-man roster player for: a player who isn't going to be a 40-man roster candidate for 2-3 years. Trading him for another player on the cusp of MLB wouldn't solve the issue that lead to his hitting the wire in the first place.
Just a note, but for those who took Spanish in high school: the "gender" of a word does not necessarily reflect the gender of the subject. "La tortuga" refers to a turtle, regardless of gender.
I agree that Baldelli is busy right now, but does one really "manage" a ST game? I mean, everything is planned in advance isn't it, including pitching changes, substitutions, etc. Besides Matt LeCroy as a pinch runner, of course.
Whose agenda? What's the conspiracy here? Backup = one that serves as a substitute or support. utility player = one who can play several positions competently. This seems exactly right.
It seems to me that Austin or, maybe, Adrianza are the only ones affected by this -- roster-wise. The only way he's taking ABs from anyone is if he's outperforming them, which is a good problem to have. I thought Adrianza's defense dropped last year. If that's trending downward, this is a significant upgrade. A defensive specialist without the defense isn't very valuable.
Is that assuming that a team doesn't make any roster moves after April 1? Considering injuries, trades, roster emergencies, parental leave, etc, I don't see the issue.
