  1. What are the reports on the hiring process. Are these Rocco's picks, the FO's, or a mutual agreement kind of thing?
  2. I don't see the appeal in Herrera, besides that he was a closer at one time. He hasn't been very good the last 2 years, including a year and half in the Central.
  3. I think a rotation of 4 OF/DH could work, and I love Cutch as a player, but I don't think he's a difference maker at this point in his career--at least statistically. Maybe his attitude is a difference maker in the locker room. He has a good rep. Personally, I'd like an impact bat to slot between #3-5 in the lineup every day, perhaps Donaldson or Cruz. If Cutch is still available in a couple months, I'd reconsider.
  4. Signing a 3B to a 1 year deal might also light a fire under Sano. (Or it might not, but I hope something will.)
  5. It's just smell test, not data-driven, but I haven't liked what I've seen of Herrera the past 2 seasons.
  6. If the Yankees make a play on Gonzalez I think the Twins are priced out pretty quick.
  7. It seems the vast majority of Rule 5 players to stick are pitchers. I wonder if that's part of why the Twins, for example, are so disproportionately pitcher-to-position-player when it comes to their 40 man roster. If so, that's an unfortunate side effect.
  8. He won't see any of them with his own eyes until Spring Training, so they'd better not wait that long.
  9. I think Polanco's consistency with the bat was another big one. No sophomore slump, which is rare.
  10. While I agree that the bullpen needs to be better and the more good players you have the better your team will be, I disagree with this article's premise that the only way to win a World Series is to imitate other teams' success around the league. The beauty of this sport is it's enormous schedule, which allows for different models to reach that same end goal. Whoever determines the next trend is the one who will likely win the WS. And sometimes you just get lucky. (eg. 1987)
  11. Agreed. This front office seems to want more control. I think they go with a first-time or relatively unexperienced MLB manager (though perhaps experienced coach) who is willing to take "top-down" instruction. A Showalter, Scosia, etc will want to call all the shots.
  12. Or he's still inexperienced at this level and nerves influence his control. With Molitor only using the opener strategy for Stewart and Gonsalves, that's seems to be at least part of the logic.
  13. While I get that being a 1st round pick gives players advantages and expectations, once they put on a minor league uniform they're on equal footing with the rest of their teammates. I don't care where a player was drafted; I care what he does in the future. They have 30-some rounds for a reason. Some players figure it out as they mature. Span comes to mind, though OF and P are clearly different scenarios. His minor league numbers were nothing that excited anyone, but he put together an above-average MLB career. Here's to hoping both Stewart and Jay turn the corner. I have more faith in the former at this point. Jay's medical history doesn't look promising.
  14. Medical staff, fundamentals coaches, and (I'll get torn apart for this one) veteran leadership. After that, somebody capable of providing Ervin-or-better innings and another 25+ HR bat.
  15. Last year they couldn't win at home. What a weird team.
  16. My limited observation of Stewart is that he needs to be more efficient. He's been better his last two outings, in spurts, but he's still hitting 100 pitches before he can get through 5. Whether he's gassed at that point or not, a pitcher needs to be ahead of that.
  17. Exactly. If Stewart wants to succeed in MLB, he'll have to find a way to get through 5 innings without so many pitches. The first 5 innings of this game took 2 hours, the last 3 took 45 minutes.
  18. That's the difference right there. Molitor often goes to his Big 3 when it's not a high leverage situation, keeping the go-tos tired and the "fill in the cracks" unused.
  19. Really? They're playing close games and have won more games than they've lost since the trade deadline. I'd say they're pretty motivated. Last year too. They could simply give up and lose every game after the deadline. Admittedly, it seems to be much moreso in the second half of the season after the front office lights a fire under them. That could be on Molitor.
  20. I love this team's fight. They seem to never give up. I'm not sure if that's on Molitor. Naming specific things he does well that I can see on my end of things? I'm not sure of any. Fundamentals are a mess, the lineups are often bizarre (but they've grown on me this year), and his overworking the bullpen is obvious to everyone but him. While it's possible that Hildenberger and Rogers, for example, are streaky, I think their inconsistencies are more likely because of how often he uses them.
