  1. This is exactly why I have no problem with chasing 30+ relievers: they usually sign 1-3 year deals. If they bomb, it's a short commitment and you eat the money. Unless it's a "proven closer" it's under $10million/year. Given the volatile performance of all RP, you don't want a 5 year deal with a 27 year-old very often.
  2. On the flip side of that argument, it means he's under team control through his prime this way. (Under the current CBA.)
  3. I'd wait to see another year of Buxton and Berrios. Rosario I think is a contender. Sano is the most likely to ask for a ridiculous paycheck later, so I'd at least gauge interest in buying out 1-3 years now. But there's really no need with any player to lock them up before they enter arb years.
  4. True, but the proposal to bat Buxton is based on his recent performance, not his potential to be better. I see him hitting 7th or 8th until he hits his way higher in the lineup. But that's Baldelli's call.
  5. I don't know Schoop well, but I question why so many lineup predictions have him in the 6 spot. His numbers last year suggest 8-9 hole to me, unless he turns it around anyway.
  6. The Sox finished behind the Twins in the standings too. Palka can hit the ball a long way, but he's a fringe MLB player. Players like that tend to get at bats on last place teams. (See the Twins box scores of the past few years.)
  7. I wouldn't part with a top 25 prospect for a starting C for 2 years and I wouldn't part with the team's top SP prospect since it's a position to develop within. I don't see a fit here, unless the Marlins change their demands at the break. And I doubt they'll drop their asking price for another full season.
  8. It's pretty rare to extend a player before their arbitration years begin.
  9. I want to believe that Molitor bp management played a bit role, overusing some arms 'til they fell off and ignoring others... but we'll see. Maybe some of these pitchers are just really streaky. Both Rogers and Hildenberger have had excellent half-seasons two years in a row now.
  10. RP don't get paid enough, do they? I'd argue that Rogers is worth more to this team than half the others on this list.
  11. I like that he's already been tested an shown the ability to overcome adversity. Oh, and his pitching stuff.
  12. Austin was worth a half-year of Lance Lynn's worst. I don't think other teams are champing at the bit for his skill set. He's shown promise, but I view him as expendable. I am curious about the 40-man move they'll make. Granite makes sense to me. While Granite's skills serve a role on a 40 man roster, he's also coming off a terrible season. Now is the time to try to drop him if they're going to.
  13. Easy. Cron? 1b Sano? 3b Austin? bench or aaa if he clears waivers Rooker? aa Garver? bench
  14. It's interesting to me how many people complain when threads go off on the business side of MLB, yet we refer to players as assets. (Sadly, they are. Come to think about it, I wish my employer would call me that...)
  15. I think those comments about mercenaries are still relevant. The key last year as how many of those contracts they had. One or two isn't a big deal, but they add up fast. I think it also depends on circumstances. As others have said, Schoop likely wants a one year deal to rebuild value (somewhat similar to Donaldson) whereas Lynn and Morrison where players who had perceived higher value and found something else on the market.
  16. I fully expect the Twins to carry two backup infielders. They have every year as long as I can remember.
  17. I agree with 90% of what you're saying here. Really, it feels that we're just debating the meaning of a word, which I don't understand because it's already defined by the dictionary. Anyway, I like Ehire. I'll end my piece there because otherwise we're just going in circles and it seems like we mostly agree.
  18. What is the main point that we're disputing? Is it just the definition of a "backup"? I'm not sure I follow. It would be great to have 25 all-stars on the roster who all got an equal piece of the pie. Realistically, no player who believes himself to be "starting caliber" is going to want to sign with a team as the 25th man on the roster (especially in MN, maybe in NYY). I think that's an unrealistic expectation. Many pro players would rather be a starter on a last place team than a non-starter on a World Series contender.
  19. This isn't football. There are only 9 positions and if you don't start, you don't play. Sometimes it takes a headache before Wally Pipp gets the day off.
  20. Except these are people and it's not that simple. It also has to be a player willing to be a backup and one who can perform off the bench, on a moment's notice, often while cold. Most player's who are "good enough to be a starter" want to be starters, not sign in Minnesota to sit on the bench and pray for a teammate's injury, illness, or suspension. Most player's who excelled their whole young lives until MLB have never sat on the bench at all.
  21. When is the last time the Mets made a good trade? As others have said, I just don't want Cano. Maybe for 1-2 years, but no way on 5.
  22. This is interesting, but irrelevant. The graphic design team doesn't write the lineup cards. This is just marketing to drum up some excitement (or discussion) during the offseason. And I don't disagree with your latter statement, but you put the catch in your own response too ("unless something else comes up").
  23. Picking somebody up on the waiver wire in November is pretty far from guaranteeing them a roster spot. If another player comes along, they cut bait and move on.
  24. I wonder if people would even notice the Rule V draft if it didn't take place during the lull before winter meetings.
