  1. I thought Molitor was trying to manage the BP better this year. NEVER bring in your closer with a 4 run lead.
  2. While his recovery is a longshot, I don't really care what his fastball is when he isn't going 100% yet in rehab. That's kind of how rehab works.
  3. Berrios right now reminds me of Liriano, post-Tommy John. If it were the old FO, that would mean they want him pitching with a chip on his shoulder, angry at not getting called up sooner. With this one, who knows.
  4. Let's not forget that, except for a select few elite closers, basically anybody pitching the 9th has similar success rates of around, I forget, is it 85%? My favorite part about Eddie Guardado as closer is that he proved anybody can be a closer. It's just like any other inning. Throwing 95 is a nice bonus, but it's not a requirement.
  5. South Korea requires every male to serve in the military. I believe Choo (TEX) got that waived because they deemed his time at the first WBC to be "service representative of the country."
  6. Who should pitch to Sano in the Derby, Tonkin or Gibson?
  7. Have a source on that?
  8. I just don't buy it. An out is always better than a hit, and there are many non-strikeout scenarios that can prevent a runner from scoring from third. Having the ability to strike a batter out is a great skill, but it can't exist without complementary skills. A pitcher who gets more strikeouts is not, by definition, better than a pitcher who gets an out through other means. Hell, the runner can even score from 3rd on a strikeout. It's part of why this is a great game.
  9. And they announce this as they dedicate a week of coverage to the NFL draft.
  10. The pay bump associated with holds and saves suggests it's promotion. Anyway, I'm too lazy to look up WHIP and compare it to lesser strikeout-reliant pitchers, but I'm pretty sure that Tonkin still isn't qualified in any situation where you need an out.
  11. Pure speculation, but he does seem destined for a bigger market, just personality wise. That was probably set in motion back when he got his first contract and all the related attention.
  12. The horse is pretty dead at this point, but why should Tonkin essentially get a promotion (from back of bullpen to front of bullpen) for being bad at his job? You have to perform every day, not just in "leverage situations." He might have the physical tools, but he's not putting it all together. It's kind of like the endless Hicks argument. To say a healthy young athlete can't pitch 2 innings is ridiculous to me. We're talking 40 pitches, not 70. He's mop-up, Haley/Tepesch is long relief. With Pressly struggling, now is Tonkin's chance to move up. If yesterday was any indication...
  13. I'm glad there's depth, but let's not forget how many MLB position players started at SS. On the current team, at least Dozier, Sano, Polanco, Santana, probably Escobar. In the past: Cuddyer, Plouffe, Joe Nathan...SS is a position "athletic types" get in A/AA and a lot changes with time. Depth is great, but don't mistake it for ready MLB talent. I'm never a fan of trading a MLB player under the premise that there's somebody "in the pipeline" unless it's an immediate upgrade. (I'm not opposed to trading MLB talent for other reasons.)
  14. Second thread today [waiver wire] where I think of Sam Fuld. And not because I think he's a great player. He's a good 27th man...I'm starting to rethink my opinion that MLB should increase roster size. The strategy of who to keep plays a real role instead of some 9th offensive lineman practice squad garbage.
  15. Referencing Hoey and Meyer are actually great examples of why I don't hate the philosophy. The problem is that somewhere along the way it became a mantra or a parody instead.
  16. If we'd kept Hicks, he'd also always live under the umbrella of "1st round pick," which means nothing in NY. In retrospect it's easy to say he'd be a solid 4th OF, but nobody in MN wants to see that of their former first round pick. See the many Tyler Jay conversations.
  17. It's unsustainable.
  18. I'm enjoying it so far, but have they won any games where they've walked fewer than 5 times? You have to hit to score runs too.
  19. It's something all baseball fans have known since the beginning of time, but it's all about the starting pitching. The bullpen has holes, but if you get consistent 6-7 inning starts it won't be exposed.
  20. He goes through waivers first, then back to original team. Then they could trade for him. Can they make a trade with BOS now, or did that have to be done before Opening Day?
  21. "Rule 5 pick Justin Haley has more or less proven his worth" I didn't realize you could do that in two MLB appearances. Considering Breslow has been used the least, it should be an easy choice. I wouldn't expect a move until we're at least to Santana's next start. You don't make the bullpen shorter right before starting a rookie #5 (after a bad start).
  22. The small bench creates problems. They should have run for Castro in the 9th, but then either Giminez bats or they have no catcher. Def should put them back to back in the same lineup.
  23. I disagree with this (admittedly, I kind of hate the closer role). A closer comes in with the lead and nobody on base 95% of the time. Ks don't really matter unless he he also has a high WHIP.
  24. Enemy Fan Forum was a favorite part of Vikings Journal. I get that it's not practical for the 162-game baseball schedule, though.
