  1. I wonder if a lot of this offseason and now this are directly tied to waiting to hire the new front office until after the World Series. They just don't know the players they're working with yet.
  2. This is about what I expect of SI these days. Slightly better than Souhan, worse that Reusse.
  3. Vargas is either going to rake in AAA (because it's his 5th time there) or do the opposite out of exhaustion at the up/down, like Arcia. (That's the only Arcia comparison I'll make. I think one of Vargas' strengths is that he adjusts to situations, while Arcia's weakness is exactly that.)
  4. Agree there's no need for 2 long relievers (well, maybe with this staff), but I see zero reason to keep Haley in MLB. Maybe in a trade so they can send him to Rochester.
  5. Tonkin hasn't done anything to earn it, but I'd keep him on the 25 until May. Wimmers is then available when the inevitable release or injury happens in the pen. Does Wimmers have the arm for a long reliever?
  6. Instead let's call them studs and workhorses and... Actually, I agree. But the norm seems to be that's it's okay to use non-human descriptors all the time.
  7. There will be at least one injury by mid-May, so it's nothing to worry about. Even a strong rotation needs 8-9 legit candidates these days.
  8. Schafer avoids Tommy John. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/03/jordan-schafer-to-undergo-elbow-surgery.html
  9. I feel like everyone was too hard on Punto over the years, but this truly frightens me.
  10. Yeah, when I hear "killer slider" all I can think of is a young Liriano. Can that pitch be thrown without wrecking a young arm?
  11. I wonder if Feb ST games are basically the equivalent of KBO pitching quality.
  12. If you're aiming for veteran presence, I don't think position matters. It's more about how they handle themselves in the locker room and on the bench than on the field.
  13. To me, all signs point to them preferring Gimenez, which I'm fine with. He hits as well as Castro... I'd like to see JRM pan out, but it looks like a wash between the two players right now. Maybe competition will bring out the best in everyone.
  14. I'm still rooting for Park, but I'm pretty sure a Feb Spring Training lineup/pitcher is at or below the equivalent of KBO.
  15. Well, you got me to click on something with Reusse's name. That doesn't happen often. This is just filler because he has to start filing stories again before Spring Training. Nothing more, nothing less.
  16. True, but he hasn't proven himself in MLB and that's where it matters.
  17. It's interesting that almost every poster has a different lock and a different goat. And that says a lot about the uncertainty in this rotation. I'd rather it was both May and Berrios, but injuries or whatnot will likely sort it out. My guess is Berrios to AAA where he later gets a spot start call-up and never looks back.
  18. On their best days I would be so happy with this. That's why I love baseball. (Well, Tyner is pushing it. Can we say Jacque Jones instead?)
  19. Has there even been a whisper that Santiago won't be in the rotation?
  20. I'm not arguing they should sign Morneau, but he also didn't play any Spring Training and came into the middle of the season with very little live baseball in preparation last year. It's possible he could still be better than his 2016 stats. But, meh. I'm fine with signing a veteran to be a PH and start once every 10 days, but I question if a left-handed 1B is what they need for that. I'd rather see somebody with a little more flexibility.
  21. I'm sure it's a solid article (admitting I don't have time to read it right now), but defining an ace by statistics alone seems to miss the point. To me, an ace has always been rare because I'd define it as "one of the best pitchers in the game," not something that needs to hit certain metrics. Rare by definition in the first place.
  22. Agreed. Which is why I don't get many of the "sign a veteran and flip him" arguments about mediocre players still available in free agency. Sign them to help the team in the present, sure. Cut 'em even, but don't fool yourself into thinking you'll get a good return in a trade.
  23. If he can pinch run too, I'd say he's competition for DSan.
