  1. In an era of immediate media and scrutiny, it gets harder and harder to wait for maturity. I can hardly think of one 21st century player who made a solid first impression. Torii went back to AAA, Cuddyer was a super utility player, Johann spent a year in AAA. Morneau disappointed in year 2 and Sano was a let-down last year....Only Mauer stuck around on his first try, but even that includes a year on the DL. Knoblauch is the last Twin I remember with a favorable first impression without a steep learning curve.
  2. Good piece, I love the human elements. This line begs all kinds of questions, though: "Back then, the culture the Twins had with promotions was something special." What is it now?
  3. I predict Sano, Santana, and Kintzler. Santana won't pitch though because of the rotation, making it 2 active reps. Kintzler is named but doesn't pitch. Sano goes 0-3. 2 Ks, 1 long out. Finishes in top 3 of the Derby. I could see Dozier getting a chance at Derby too, based on last year.
  4. It's the Houston series all over again. Yes, the series went poorly. Yes, the team still sucks out loud at home. Yes, they're unlikely to compete for the division at the end of the season because they've been walking a tightrope all year long. But it's mid-June. This is baseball, not a 16 game NFL season. Teams have bad streaks and good streaks. Losing a series, especially against a division opponent in June, isn't the kiss of death. They play each other like 25 times each year. Do I honestly believe this team will contend at the end of the year? Probably not, but anything is possible. Let it ride, at least until the All-Star break, which is when this stuff traditionally starts to happen.
  5. Why can't fans be happy with a second place team, in first place 2 days ago? I don't get this statement.
  6. The average IP so far isn't really relevant to me. First, Santana has more starts. Second, given their ages, Santana won't get a pitch limit in a postseason game. They'd run him until he's out of gas. They'll never do that to someone Berrios' age. Molitor has pulled Santana early a lot this year (there's a PPress article on it if you care) to "save him for later in the year." Those rules don't apply in postseason. Regardless of IP, I'd still trust Santana more. As I said above, experience matters. Berrios is still pretty raw. Either way, it's a solid 1-2 right now.
  7. One of this team's weaknesses is its bench. He's currently one of the best bench players (and he understands the role), which means trading him probably makes the team worse. Especially during a mid-season stretch without many days off.
  8. Santana without question. Experience matters. Santana will give you 6-8 innings. Berrios 5-7.
  9. Don't get an RP 'til the break, or Molitor will burn him out by August. I'd say they're distant contenders because this sport is so prone to streaks. The right streak at the right time, and why not? (File under 1987.) I imagine a 7 game World Series. Giminez will pitch 2 innings in games 2-6, but the Twins lose game 7 18-13 after leading 12-6 in the 7th.
  10. Replace "luck" with "confidence." Confidence is contagious, and confidence generally increases production and improves concentration in any part of life, baseball or otherwise.
  11. I see posters say this a lot. Walks hurt at any point in the game, but I feel like control is even more essential late in the game.
  12. Eh, his results are better than a lot of the pen so far...
  13. Yesterday is on Molitor more than Belisle. At this point, he should only be pitching in mopup until he shows something. It's a curious bullpen this year in that they don't seem to blow many games. It's more than when they blow them, it's a spectacular failure.
  14. That's way faster than Gimenez pitches and he's been okay.
  15. He might return to pitch in the 6th at some point this year, but to expect him to be an effective late inning arm is unrealistic. Hopefully he can recover.
  16. If they don't make any changes, yes. But I'm not concerned about next year's roster right now. Even with this season outperforming expectations, I expect significant changes next offseason as the Falvey/Levine have had time to learn what they've got to work with. The fact that this team keeps using the DH as a late inning defensive replacement says the current construction doesn't make sense.
  17. If he's up, he's the 5th OF and gets 6 AB per week, max. That doesn't help a young player develop. If you think that's his ceiling, sure. As others have said, his only path right at this given moment is an injury to a starter.
  18. I don't get why Molitor keeps using him in serious game situations instead of waiting for mop-up time to rebuild confidence. But...Molitor and bullpen usage is another thread...
  19. I've never seen a call for a third catcher before under the guise that it "adds flexibility" to the roster. Man, this team needs some reliable arms so they can downsize the bullpen and get a real bench.
  20. While this is likely a .500 team, I'm not ready to give up after a 4 game losing streak. That happens (many times) during a 162-game season. These were competitive games over the first 7 innings. That's a good sign. The other forced positive: um, I guess there's solidarity in the bullpen. I can't blame any single player for the past two games.
  21. Fights happen anywhere and everywhere in life, sports are no different. Is it dumb? Yes. But it's going to happen. There's always that percentage of idiots and people who can't control their emotions. I do think MLB's non-drug suspensions are a joke for the most part. The league should rethink the "warning" system that gave teams a freebie and got Gardie so heated, and they should base suspensions by the week instead of by the day (for real infractions, not dust-ups like the Sano thing).
  22. Getting a solid starter (even a #6) would help this team so much right now. Add one more reliable bullpen arm, and then they can reduce the bullpen size by one. A bigger bench is needed for the stretch when players start to tire out. And also for when you need a real pinch hitter. I wonder if Falvey's philosophy is that #5 pitchers grow on trees/waivers and you can float by without investing in a specific one. It's working (somehow) so far.
  23. For a #4-5, I think the best option is to unload Gibson for another "change of scenery" pitcher. Little upside, but it could work in the same way that Nolasco for Santiago has. If it were later in the season, I'd be more open to actually giving something up.
