  1. Completely agree. The problem was missing 4 weeks and 2 weeks of ST respectively. Players know their careers are relatively short, and they are not going to spent a season pouting.
  2. I do. King Theo wanted Harper in the worst way, but couldn't clear enough payroll room. Also, Perez is projected to have one more win than Darvish next season. Our pal Yu is very unpopular on the Cubbie fan board and the King is starting to lose his lustre.
  3. The rule of thumb is you need at least an 8 mph differential. Romero last I heard was 5 mph.
  4. Brett Anderson is an injury waiting to happen. Romo is 35 and we were looking at him. You are more comfortable with players we are not familiar with?
  5. You don't DFA players with trade value, which he clearly has. I recall prior to last season, we had members who wanted to DFA Gibson and Pressly. Also, he had tendinitis.
  6. Since LaVelle probably saw TR at least once a week, I'm guessing he was in a much better position to know his.duties than practically anyone else. Why don't you contact LaVelle. He always leaves contact information. I'm not the only one who reads the Strib sports page.
  7. Reed was the 3rd highest rated reliever in the free agent class of 2018. His chance to rebound is probably 80-90%. He's had too good of career. I read at MLB trade rumors the top 15 highest paid relievers in the class of 2018 all accumulated less than 1 WAR. Free agent relievers are always going to be 50/50.
  8. It evens things up for mid-market teams. I hope it never changes.
  9. We are going to score mucho more runs this year. A far better over/under is 84.
  10. LaVelle told us, TR was in charge of IFA during the Bill Smith era. We know he started the initiative circa 2005 or 2006. Look at how many of those players are around. Don't forget Romero and Graterol. Also, it's amazing how many teams are not consistently or wholeheartedly making an effort in IFA. We have been one of the best for almost 10 years.

    Depth

I agree, we did a much better job accumulating depth this off season. I think Torreyes and Astudillo may be key. Very big year for our major league ready pitching also.
  12. We need big years from the core of 4 plus Rosario and Polanco. No we don't need career years. I feel Buxton only needs to bat .240-.250 to be an All-Star. If Sano can stay healthy 30 homes runs is more than possible. Before last season, all of our writers except one or two predicted we would make the player-offs. Cleveland was less than impressive this off season. Absolutely no reason to wait.
  13. Most teams are not looking for players who can play multiple positions. Teams have been specializing for years. Don't buy an Austin or Duda jersey. Gordon will replace Adrianza when he's ready. Think Ron Washington.
  14. I've revered Sid since I learned to read by reading his column. I don't read Gleeman, but every now and then I hit the wrong button.
  15. What it means is we need to get off to a fast start. It's more than given, it's practically a fact. When was the last time a starting pitcher threw 25 innings, was then shut down for the rest of the season with nerve damage to his elbow, then came back the next season and shined on day one. He might be ready sometime, but I bet he starts on the DL, for no other reason than he is out of options, and needs to be handled carefully.
  16. I agree. Just like they spotted something with Anibal Sanchez. The availability of starting pitching this off season was minimal. At worst he's a cheap placeholder for Mejia, Stuart, Thorpe, or even Rosario. When one of those 4 decide to shine, most likely Perez will be DFA'ed.
  17. Last season we were .500 after May 1st. Hence Perez instead of Mejia. The time to win is right now.
  18. Sid and spotrac said we spent $ 114.5.last season. 121M in 2017. I would think everyone would know better than to believe Gleeman. How can you believe a college drop-out? Our favorite team is going for it in 2019! Be there or be square!
  19. I just read where King Theo invited 37.
  20. I think we all want Romero to ultimately be a starter. What I don't want is him to spend anymore time in Rochester. When he wasn't brought up in September, that made me certain he was probably short a pitch. He could be the key to our 2020 rotation. Did I mention he's another TR guy?
  21. I'm going to my usual 15-20 games a year. Be there or be square.
  22. One national expert referred to our offseason as sneaky good, another as solid. I agree with both of them. The new regime is operating with one hand tied behind their back, and I'm not sure that's ever going to change. I think the core of 4 plus Polanco and Rosario are going to bounce back in a big way and our acquisitions will perform somewhat better than the market, which is 50/50.
