  1. Without doing any research, it appears the mid-market Cardinals have had the window open the longest. Before them, possibly the Braves. I've said before, if a large market team is firing on all cylinders, it's near impossible for a mid-market team to compete. Fortunately, they often shoot themselves in the foot with large, long term contracts. I think very highly of Theo, but I doubt he will survive the 6 year anchor around his neck.
  2. If he's great you have him for 2 years. If he sucks, you get him for 4 more. How can you not love that deal?
  3. You do not need a mythical ace. Give me a 5 man balanced rotation with additional depth anytime. Don't even pretend you can predict what will happen in a short series.
  4. Right now we are a better team than we have been in years. I could care less how we get rotation help. Plenty of time and plenty of starting pitching still available.
  5. Napoli is a win now move. There has been some talk on the board, which I don't agree with, that we are pointing to 2019 or beyond. Signing Napoli is a clear sign we are looking to ring the bell this season. I wonder if there will be a more valuable 24th-25th man in The Show this season. He needs to hit somewhat over the Mendoza Line and give us 25-30 bombs. If he still owns a glove, he may be the emergency catcher, that gives Garver an opportunity to be used differently.
  6. Napoli gives us another bomber. At crunch time make them deal with a proven vet who can go yard. I like a one year deal.
  7. He was a starter in high school and his freshman year in college. Every thing I read about him going into the draft was, teams were going to look at him as a starter. A lefty throwing 96-98, with what was once called the best slider in the organization, and several times I've read he has a 4 pitch mix. It was a no-brainer to draft him and also to see if he could transition to a starter. His last year in college he pitched 70 innings, so they knew going in it was a 2 and probably a 3 year project to get him up a starter innings. Injuries are part of the game, and no one knew his first 3 years he would pitch only about 100 innings.
  8. I read that also, but the fact is he has pitched 45 innings in the past 2 years. I'm comfortable with my guess.
  9. I would guess the ship has sailed on both Jay and May being starters. Romero appears to be our best chance for a top of the rotation guy, until we get down to our teenagers. I would be very, very patient with him.
  10. Actually, no one knew what it was going to take. Why do you think this has dragged out for so long?
  11. 1/2 Santana and Berrios 3 Free agent 4/5 Most likely a one year, make good free agent/Gibson 6/7 Mejia/Gonsalves My guess is Duffey will be long relief/spot starter with May as a wildcard.
  12. I don't know anything about Miley, but I believe we will make this type of signing, in addition to one of the top 4. I don't want to hear about blocking. The fear of blocking lead to 2016, and in particular Berrios crapping the bed.
  13. I never said that though did I. Going back a few posts, I never said the board was specifically screaming for Haley either. Just say no to myths!
  14. Looks like Haley has become Falvey's David Ortiz. Silly me, I've always thought Rule 5 had about as much to do with winning, as what color uniform the team wore on a particular day. It's the slow season, let's keep this thread going. I'm predicting Kinley will follow the Scott Diamond path and not the Haley path. The prospect we trade to Miami, will instantly become a board favorite, and Kinley will remain a board scapegoat.
  15. 18 innings is not an abomination. The board was screaming to see shiny new things, of which Haley was one. Doesn't anyone else want to stop beating the Rule 5 horse?
  16. There is absolutely no hurry. Kinsley doesn't have a prayer of making it. May will most likely start on the DL and Pineda may be available in September. We have the numbers on our side. Things have a way working themselves out over time.
  17. I like Meija or Gonsalves as first man up this season. I didn't want to see Gonsalves brought up for just a spot start last season, but would like to see him get the ball every 5th game for at least 7 or 8 starts, not unlike Gibson and May in the past. Pitching depth for our favorite team is getting very close to respectable.
  18. If Hughes is 100% healthy, it only makes sense to give him one last chance. Maybe Rob Antony can dump him on the Angels at the trade deadline. May has only pitched 45 innings in the past 2 years combined. It's kind of like Tyler Jay, we can't wait for them to build up starter's innings. It's time for both, to go to the bathroom, or get off the pot.
  19. The Astros have definitely become the flavor of the month, but they must be getting close to being tapped out. I would never mention them in the same breath as the Cubbies, Yankees, etc.
  20. Last I saw, 31 moves have been made so far in free agency, 3 by the Twins. They took starting pitching 3,4, and 5 in the draft. At the deadline they added 4 arms. The 3 moves they have made in free agency were for pitching. Nothing is lackadasical, nor incomprehensible.
  21. Our favorite team was in the hunt 2 of the past 3 seasons. If they made no changes whatsoever, they would still be stronger in 2018 than those 3 teams, and we have already made 3 solid moves with all kinds of time left. We can contend in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, blindfolded with one hand tied behind our back.
  22. There are no signs whatsoever that they are ignoring 2018, in favor of 2019. Patience is a virtue.
  23. You don't spent 100M for a game that may or may not occur. Interesting to note. The board was screaming for Berrios to start game 163 in 2015. I don't recall anyone wanting him to start game 163 in 2017.
