    Don't fall for the company line. They are looking to win right now. When you are getting paid millions of dollars you can't just point your figure at ownership and refer to them as cheap bastards. The ceiling of this franchise is to dominate the Central. Nothing more.

    I get it on all levels. If one game is going to settle our season tomorrow. Do you go with the guy who threw 25 innings last year or Perez? This move is for the present. Here and now. If one of our young pitchers becomes a world beater, we DFA Perez or send him to the bullpen no sweat. Flexibility is a good thing.

    They turned their short term FA contracts into a haul at the trade deadline. So in essence we have 3 drafts. Rule 4, IFA, and trade deadline.

    It's relevant because 80-90% of starting pitcher's rookie debuts are similar to Gonsalves. Our very own Gibson, May, and Berrios's debuts were not dissimilar. It's part of the process.

    The reason why is because that's baseball. The rule of thumb I use is, if you have 10 top starting pitching prospects, 25-30% will make it. Pitching is a numbers game. I learned that many years ago from Andy MacPhail.

    Sano will be our 3B until he isn't. Gordon will replace Adrianza when he's ready. There's a bigger picture out there.

    I know I have to sit thru the dumpster diving talk, but can't help noticing a lot of teams are doing the same thing. They must be concerned about their lefties. We picked up 3 at the 2017 trade deadline, but only one in 2018. Another reason why, I'm not at all unhappy about Perez. Out of the pen, he has touched 97.

    Does it even matter at this point in time, why he only got 25 innings? Lynn is far better than Mejia will ever be. I've posted this before, let me post it again. Perez and Mejia have virtually the same ceiling. They are 4 or 5's. Perez has a higher floor, because it's unlikely Mejia gets 7 or 8 seasons in The Show.

    Wins and losses are great stats. I still remember how many games I won in college. No idea how many of those WAR things I accumulated. Look, Darvish is no more hurt than Hughes was. The board badmouthed Hughes, I badmouth Darvish. Yes, if Perez gets hurt, he'll continue to be a board scapegoat.

    In the last 3 years, Darvish has won 18 games. Perez has won 25. Who made the better deal? Also, he's projected to win one more game than Darvish this season.

    You're going to hand Mejia a spot in the rotation after 25 innings last season? I say it's 50/50 he starts on the DL. The time to win is now. If Mejia becomes a world beater, we can DFA Perez or move him to the pen. We were a .500 team after May 1st last season. This is not the time to worry about the future, player development etc. This is the time to win and it's a no-brainer that Perez is in a better position to help us win than Mejia out of the gate.

    On the pitching side, I believe the FO is building up numbers below Rochester. Our major league ready or near ready, will be needed for emergencies, and those that shine will help fill the rotation next season. I'm hoping our best 12 arms head up north and no doubt we will see the rest sometime this season. This may be a make or break season for Mejia, Gonsalves, Littell, Stewart, Thorpe, and to some degree Romero. This is going to be an interesting season, and the more I think about, the more I like the Perez pick up.

    I've been screaming to trade for a youngish 2/3 for several years now. IMHO there are 10-12 #1s, probably 25-30 1s and 2s combined. Virtually every team is looking for the same thing. In 2020, Berrios, Gibson, Romero, Thorpe, free agent. Graterol in 2021. I don't know if I'm safe saying this, but 4 of the 5 are TR's guys.

    I stand corrected. I'm tired of this board judging players on what they wanted, and not being at all realistic. Also, Pavano and Hughes were no where close to being #5s when they were signed.

    How many free agents are not question marks? Remember, probably 80% of their previous employers gave up on them. I'm amazed at how many members still view free agency as Christmas time. That's been over for close to 10 years.

    Callis is at MLB.com so you should have access( I read the article at TwinkieTown). He gave a big picture view and I'm too lazy to go back and view the specifics. You know about Odorizzi, an IFA was traded for Cave, as was Ynoa for someone I can't recall. The new regime has only been here for a little over 2 years, so it hasn't had time to develope.

    I agree with you. I wouldn't give up on him yet, but I would have him start in Rochester.

    Jim Callis wrote an article recently, stating we were one of 5 teams that improved our farm system the most. Can't help but notice, the national experts are much higher on our favorite team, than many on the board. Also, top of the rotation guys don't grow on trees and every team is looking for them. To get anyone to answer the phone, I would guess you're talking a minimum of Thorpe and Graterol.

    I'm guessing it will take one more year after this for Berrios to hit his ceiling. Whether he ever wins hardware depends on a lot of things he can't control. I believe he will become the mythical ace the board is lusting for.

    No team ever has a good year, merely because of their #5 starter. It's not Perez's fault he's not Kershaw. Take this move for what it is.

    Very well written article. Mejia gave us all of 25 innings last season, and I'm not convinced he's healthy. Perez's and Mejia's ceilings are virtually identical and Perez has a higher floor(unlikely Mejia puts in 7-8 years). This signing gives us flexibility at a very reasonable price. If Mejia, Gonsalves, Stewart,Thorpe or Littell become a world beater, we can move Perez to the pen or DFA him. Note, when moved to the pen, Perez's velocity spikes.

    The current regime is very good at trading. If you are talking about TR, there was no one left to trade after they obtained Meyer and May. My expectations are high for the rest. Guess that ties it up, 1 to 1.
