    Need to go 9-4 at a minimum over the next 13 games. Even then, we might not have enough time to get back into the playoff chase.

    How much more is he worth at 1.5 years plus a replacement level pitcher vs. .5 years and Berrios giving the Twins 1.5ish WAR vs. qualifying offer and 3 WAR in 2022? I don’t know that answer. My guess is the return package isn’t significantly better now vs. a year from now. By the way, weren’t you the same guy saying they should try to keep the only pitcher they’ve developed in the last 15 years? ?

    Sure. How about in July 2022 if we are out of contention again?

    None of the prospects will produce a 3 WAR season in 2022. We’d be lucky to get half the value. And free agent starting pitchers that could surpass 3 WAR are unrealistic or nearing 40 years old. Again, we don’t have a surplus of starting pitching, or pitching in general.

    As @birdwatcherwould say, trade from surplus, not a deficit. The Twins certainly do not have a surplus of starting pitchers. His value in 2022 won’t be matched by a prospect. Unless we’re punting 2022 as well, we need to keep Berrios.

    Bingo. IMO it was more disrespectful that Astudillo is out there throwing slower pitches than middle school players to other professional hitters. The last guy to crush a 3-0 lob pitch was in the MVP conversation in 2020 and the cover of the sports’ primary video game ??‍♂️ We’re getting so in depth with analytics, so here’s a compromise... Let’s differentiate the PA when a batter is supposed to try, and not supposed to try.

    I’m still not sure I’d call this a win, or an even trade for Minnesota 3 years later. Alcala has a bit more Jim Hoey to him than I’d like. Dude throws hard but has no clue where it’s going to end up. Celestino is still a year or more away from being considered an MLB asset.

    Who’s next on the bullpen carousel? Law and Anderson aren’t solutions. Alcala doesn’t have a clue where the ball is going when it leaves his hand. This is a multiple appearance problem for him.

    Gotta go 6-6 over the next 12 games, otherwise the dream of being the 2019 Washington Nationals is dead.

    Smeltzer could be AAAA material, but he’ll continue getting opportunities. He’s blessed with the magical abilities of being left handed and breathing.

    I’m cool with him getting innings either way. They’ll need to make decisions on Thorpe and Smeltzer who are both out of options next year IIRC. I’d like to find out if either one has the chops to start, or else move them to the pen.

    I can’t see a full tear down rebuild, no matter how bad things get in May or June. The only player with a contract beyond this year that I think they would pay money to trade away is Sano. It feels like we’re ready to move on from him very soon, and give Kirilloff the full time gig at 1B. Falvey should definitely gather info around the league what Berrios and Buxton’s worth is with 1.5 years left on their contract. My assumption is we will view them as more valuable in 2022 than the return we would get and keep them.

    Honest question. What pitchers are we supposed to be waiting for in AAA to help out the MLB team? Particularly the bullpen.

    I don’t think it will be as much of a fire sale as you do. Out of this list of players, only Happ is traded IMO for a modest return. It’s unlikely a contender views him as a playoff starter since the Yankees moved him to the pen in recent years. There’s a chance Big Mike is moved as well on his expiring contract if the season is lost by late July. In that case, I hope it’s a trade and sign back in FA this winter. Can’t see Garver being moved unless it’s an overpay. He’ll still be affordable and still provides offensive upside compared to most catchers around the league.

    Yep. I hope the “it’s early, things will turn around” narrative is ending soon. It’s time to win a lot of games. Otherwise, Falvey would be doing a disservice not selling at the deadline.

    None of the above. I read most of the winter, and frankly over the last 2 years how deep our farm system is. Let’s try them out first before paying a premium for a reliever we’ll probably regret trading for in a year.

    Not much changes from the original plan. Sano plays 1B primarily, Kirilloff plays LF primarily, and Arraez fills in elsewhere around the field. When it’s all said and done, all 3 will look like they played almost every day.

    Nice to see the bats waking up. We need a red hot month of play in May. Every week needs to be above .500. Preferably a few games above .500. There’s certainly an opportunity for one of Thorpe or Smeltzer seizing the 5th spot in the rotation. I’d like to see if they can be legitimate starters while they still have 1 option year remaining. If they’re not considered starters, get them prepped as a reliever. We could use help in that area as well.

    Are they primed to pitch in the majors right now? We could use a couple of reinforcements in the bullpen.
