    The problem the Twins have at the trade deadline is that the offensive positions they are most below league average is SS, 3B and C. It is really hard to move any of these players for an improvement. The best to hope for is that Correa, Lewis and Ryan improve. Hope is a poor strategy. But making a trade for 1B were France is about league average will not offset the dismal production on the left side of the infield.

    I think it is a really good idea to have someone who can throw 4 innings when our starters get 5 or less. It would save the bullpen. Good luck to Travis Adams. I hope to read about a lot of good pitching from him over the next many years.

    “Finally, Keaschall was moved to the 60-day IL and is expected to be out for the foreseeable future although should return this season.” The original projected return date was end of June. Has there been any info communicated that it will be much longer than that. The injury occurred at the end of April, so a 60 day IL can align with the original return estimate.

    This was in the WSJ but can also be found elsewhere. Tony Clark and other MLBPA executives are being investigated for allegedly siphoning off some of the windfall generated from their arrangement with OneTeam Partners. The link below gives a detailed explanation of what is known. OneTeam Partners was formed to capitalize on players marketing rights and a portion of the proceeds are distributed back to the players.     How to manage the Royce Lewis 3B situation is problematic. Baring a season ending trip to the IL, bringing in an additional 3B likely facilitates a divorce. Also, a return to the earlier version of Lewis is better than most available external options. A fellow TD member mentioned that Alex Bregman might be available. If so, he is likely the best option. At $40 million/ year he is not likely for the Twins and his opt out after this season complicates trade discussions.

    Lee was considered the best college hitter in the draft and dropped In the draft because of his injury history (back) in college.

    Lopez left last nights game with right shoulder tightness. I haven’t seen an injury update, but just when we think the Twins have expendable pitching someone gets hurt.

    Defense is really the challenge as you have pointed out. While I understand the logic and flexibility of having multiple utility players, how the Twins have constructed their roster means they are below average defensively at multiple positions.

    I am very happy that us Twins fans are finally getting to see a healthy Buxton. I think he is being given too much credit for a few opposite field hits. Elementary students learning baseball are taught to hit an outside pitch to the opposite field. It is one of the skills that has seemingly become rare in today’s game.

    The challenge is that the Twins are in need of more than one bat. The needs are 1B, 3B and possibly LF. Bader, after a hot start is cooling.

    I think the reason is about availability and managerial flexibility. A RP who throws only one inning will be available the next day. This availability then needs to be weighed against winning a game tomorrow vs burnout and also protecting a pitchers career.

    There was article in the WSJ sometime ago about the San Francisco Giants asking their minor league pitchers to throw deeper into the game. I have no idea how successful this will be. All of MLB realizes that there is a pitching utilization problem. There not many solutions. Ask starters to pitch more. Ask relievers to throw more innings per outing but with less frequency. Expand the roster (includes increasing number of times a player can be sent to the minors in a season).     I think this level of usage for a relief pitcher is approaching burnout. While they may have success for 1 or 2 years their effectiveness will not be sustained.

    Also a poor slide by Wallner. If he slides feet first he is likely safe. Agree that it was a poor send.

    I’m sure that most major league players realize that hitting 0.130 isn’t going to cut it and Lewis should be sent down or put on IL if he is hurt. The Twins have at least 3 options to play 3B without Lewis.

    When pitchers like Coulombe have success it makes me wonder if there is too much groupthink in baseball. Hi octane pitchers throwing the same/similar pitches with maximum delivery makes it easier for hitters to adjust to different pitchers.

    And Jason Bartlett. Bartlett put up 9.4 fWAR in 3 years at SS with the Rays.

    Buxton made a very good throw in the 6th to keep the Orioles lead at 1 (2-1)

    Jose Miranda is -14 OAA at 3B in what amounts to a full seasons worth of playing time since 2022. Of all the players with at 1000 innings at 3B, only Patrick Wisdom and Jake Burger have a more negative OAA. The most generous thing that can be said is that he is hurt to often to establish whether or not he is capable of becoming a serviceable major league 3B. On the current roster his path is limited to 1B and DH and being an above average hitter.     I would add that pitchers also figured out that high fastballs at or just on top of the zone could effectively neutralize the upper cut swing for the fences approach that Daniel Murphy popularized. I think the multi years of focus on this approach has hurt Twins hitters as the organization would work on changing hitters swings to capitalize on this approach to hitting. Kepler especially comes to mind. Both Lewis and Austin Martin have commented on how the Twins attempts to change their swing did not work for them.

    Let’s start Sunday morning with some positives. The Twins won yesterday and Byron Buxton is tracking to play in 147 games this year. Half of the starting lineup has an OPS < 0.700. Neither Ty France nor Bader is the Twins problem. The offensive problems are Correa hitting near the Mendoza line. He is under contract for at least 3 more years. Lewis, Wallner and Keaschall are on the IL. I would like to think that that this team would be better if the latter 3 were in the lineup every day. Having many players on the IL seems to be an ongoing issue.
