  1. The Twins are desperate for offensive production and they hope Lewis can be productive. Halfway through the season the Twins have 4 players with >1.0 fWAR. Detroit has 7 players. As a team, the Twins have 8.6 fWAR, Detroit has 16.3.
  2. “They refused to move on from Emilio Pagán” We saw Pagan pitch when the Twins were in Cincinnati. He looked really good—almost unhittable. Right now, long term improvement looks like moving on from Lewis, Correa, Larnach and maybe others. They will not bring much trade value, so the Twins will hold onto them and hope they improve.
  3. “The Twins made zero MLB transactions over the past seven days, avoiding any new injuries ” Castro was a scratch today because of a sore wrist that he originally injured in Cincinnati. While not expected to be put on the IL, Castro was presumably unavailable to PH for Bride in the 8th inning today with a runner on third. Why else is would we send Bride to bat with RISP trailing by 1 run, and down to the last 4 outs with Castro on the bench.
  4. I think several years of bomba squad success had intoxicated the decision making within the organization with regards to drafting and roster construction. The Twins have a lot of bat first players with below average defense. Therefore we are left in need of upgrading at multiple positions—which essentially means that no single acquisition will significantly alter the course of the season. Also, the Twins are not playing fundamentally sound baseball which suggests that there are coaching/development issues within the organization. It has been years since the Twins way was emulated and a source of pride throughout the organization.
  5. “The outing instantly elevated his stock from an intriguing draft arm to one of the most electric prospects in the country.“ if this is truly the situation, then there is way to much group think from the evaluators
  6. With Wentz throwing 43 pitches last night, he is unlikely to be available for the rest of this series.
  7. “No Twin has even participated in the Derby since Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau.” Miguel Sano was runner up in the 2017 HR Derby. He hit a ball 491 ft early in the derby. Participating in the HR derby might have ruined his career. Before the Derby he was a good hitter. After….well you know the rest of the story as he tried to hit every ball 490 ft. Edited to add that Brian Dozier participated in the HR derby in 2014.
  8. I viewed it as a really lazy effort. For example they have the ETA of Keaschall as 2027. He would be playing today had he not broke his hand in a HBP. FG is not as high on Khadim Diaw as is TD.
  9. I have always been puzzled how a catcher can go from close to an elite pitch framer to really bad in one year. Maybe it’s the stat or maybe just bad umpiring. As others on TD have pointed out, the Twins draft strategy on catchers is puzzling. There is no position that is more important.
  10. It is natural that players are frustrated and fans are disappointed with career altering injuries. Royce went from possibly perennial all-star / future hall of famer to someone who might be struggling to get their next contract. The emotionally side of sports injuries can be very devastating. Edited to add: And fans can be very insensitive. As an example look back at all the negative comments on TD about Joe Mauer’s contract following his career altering concussion.
  11. Ignore comment as @tony&rodneycomment above. 2 Runs scored after there should have been 3 outs (K + pass ball with Steer reaching 1st would have been the 3rd out). I think both runs scored on the double. But that doesn’t matter, even if 6 runs had scored only 2 would have been earned.
  12. “but Jeffers couldn't corral the pitch” This is being generous. The pitch was in the middle of the plate. I don’t have an issue with Wallner diving for the ball in the 6th inning as Buxton was backing up the play. I not sure that Wallner should have been the substitution for Castro in RF when Keirsey is on the bench. It is likely that Castro or Keirsey catch that ball. WPA. Not sure how this is calculated. But the largest negatives should have gone to Jeffers (failure to ”corral” a pitch that hit his glove without moving it -0.5 WPA), Wallner for failure to catch the line drive -0.2 WPA, and Rocco -0.30 for not substituting Keirsey in RF in a 1 run game Poor defense cost the Twins 4 runs last night. Defense matters.
  13. I think the real issue is that there is combination of too many injuries: Lewis, Keaschall, Emmanuel Rodriguez, Schoebel (Buxton is currently not on this list but I have not seen an update on his elbow). There are also players who were expected to perform but have become DFA candidates. Julien and Miranda. Although Julien being able to turn things around was always a question mark. Few would have predicted that a healthy Miranda would turn into a pumpkin. Then there is Correa. As others on this thread are pointing out injuries and lack of ability to be healthy/ stay healthy have become the plight of the Twins, year after year.
  14. Calling up Dashawn Keirsey Jr. was not a move made in isolation. Buxton exited Saturday’s game after being hit on the left elbow with a pitch. With Buxton’s availability uncertain, the Twins had only one OF who can play CF and had at least 3 players who could play 3B. Nice write-up on Gasper. If he keeps hitting like this he should be up soon. However, there is only limited space on the roster for players who profile as a DH.
  15. Devers was hitting well so there is a lot of risk for Boston. However, Devers was not being a team player and a trade was probably all but certain after he refused to play 1B. A cancer in the clubhouse usually doesn’t have any positives for a team.
  16. Three at bats with RISP. Article mentions Castro taking a ball down the middle of the plate on call strike 3. Correa also took a fastball down the middle of the plate with RISP in the 7th or 8th inning before weakly popping out. No doubt Castro and Correa were waiting for “their” pitch to drive. Contrast that with Altuve’s at bat in the 9th. Altuve was just trying to make contact. The outcome was a lucky infield single with the runner taking 3B. But it was his approach that made the difference. I doubt that Altuve would have taken a pitch down the middle of the plate in that situation.
  17. Of the 113 qualified OF he is 111th with -7 OAA. Basically he profiles as a DH unless he can play 1B. (can’t paste Baseball Salvant link, not sure why).
  18. Weak hitting shortstops (Correa’s WRC+ of 85 is 40th in the league) even with stellar defense who are paid $35 million dollars do not have much trade value. If the Twins are lucky there will be a rich market team in need of a SS and is willing to take on his contract. Most likely the Twins would need to kick in $$ for a trade. Correa also has a no trade clause in his contract.
  19. The Brewers had a say in this trade as well. One possible explanation is to send a message to other potential malcontents who might demand a trade in the future. Be careful what you demand.
  20. The Twins are only 9 games out of 1st place in the division and are 1/2 games up in the wild card standings. It wasn’t that long ago that the Yankees preferred the wild card position because it provided a more favorable matchup in the playoffs.
  21. The article confirms what my eyes can see. Lots of call strikes on pitches that were balls in situations that really mattered.
  22. If the Twins do not make the playoffs, Ty France will not be the main reason.
  23. Why remove defense from consideration. Some defenders are better than others and the players know who they are when they come to bat. To put it in another way, the outcome for a ball that hangs in air for 2.5 seconds that Buxton has to move 50 ft to catch is not the same as a similar ball the Wallner has to move 50 ft to catch.
  24. The problem the Twins have at the trade deadline is that the offensive positions they are most below league average is SS, 3B and C. It is really hard to move any of these players for an improvement. The best to hope for is that Correa, Lewis and Ryan improve. Hope is a poor strategy. But making a trade for 1B were France is about league average will not offset the dismal production on the left side of the infield.
