    Farmer plays all the infield positions, plays them soundly (unlike Julien in my opinion), and that Farmer is also the emergency catcher, if I am not mistaken. The problem i think is that Twins fans have become conditioned to expect every player on this roster will get a bunch of plate appearances, just because. No reason Farmer should be getting as many at bats as he does. Rocco’s early game pinch hitting I think is a factor here. Although o the flip side, if Farmer did get more regular playing time, his offense might actually improve. Not arguing that should happen, but that might explain the thinking and why he gets as many at bats as he does.

    Kudos to everyone who voted Julien. Julien never would have been on my radar, but give them credit for making the right move. There are arguments to be made to keep Farmer over Julien. I still can’t see Julien playing second, and I can’t be the only one. In a playoff series, Julien should be PH/DH (and would be a good one) but emergency second baseman only. But sure keep coaching him at second while he’s at AAA.

    That’s more of an argument that Lewis isn’t good enough to face major league pitching. I think the front office was counting on demoting Miranda or Larnach or maybe Kirilloff first of all, or secondly, they were counting on someone needing to go on the IL. This is what the broadcasters mean when they say “things have a way of working themselves out”. I am not saying anything eyebrow raising here. The front office certainly doesn’t want to go down to 12 pitchers to make a place for Lewis, and the very last thing the front office wants to do is DFA a Margot, Santana or Farmer. they would rather leave Lewis in the minors on his rehab for as long as possible, than do that.

    Lewis is ready. He’s done a week of rehab games. He doesn’t need a second spring training. He won’t be in the lineup tonight against a rightie but he should be on the bench tonight and active for Saturday’s game against Valdez. It’s also possible that the fans have it all wrong, and Lewis actually spends his free time in a hospital bed hooked up to tubes when not at the park playing baseball. In that case, wait to call him up for the Yankees series!

    Don’t forget that the Twins screwed up Buxton’s rehab last September. Everyone expects Lewis to be in Houston tomorrow. Lewis debuted against Houston last year too. With Lewis currently batting 1.000 he has nowhere to go but down!

    These still look like a group of .500 teams in this division, to me. Cleveland, like the Twins, sure has done a good job piling up wins against weaker teams. However, I don’t think they can patch their rotation together all season. Some of their bullpen guys have stepped up, and they will get Kwan back at some point. Though, if Gavin Williams comes back healthy, that would really give them a boost. So the Guardians are logical favorites. Detroit and KC have strong pitching like the Twins but I think are still too young and inexperienced with their everyday players to make a run. (Except for Salvi, who is not doing a Miguel Cabrera imitation.) KC could stick around this summer too. The Twins are currently about +280 to win the division, bet 100 to win 280. Almost 3-1 money. Not saying they are sure to win it but those are great odds to take if you are a betting kind of person.

    Cleveland lost their ace in Bieber, and their next two best pitchers are nursing sore elbows. Imagine the outcry if the Twins were forced to compete without Lopez, Ryan and Ober in the rotation. We know Chicago is out, and Detroit and Kansas City are still very young. The money line is back out to about +280 to win the division after that seven game skid. If you like betting and like the Twins, now’s a good time to put that money down.

    The teaser text needs to be clearer in my opinion, but it is intriguing, but get to the point faster… I don’t necessarbuy the premise that a high K rate or low walk rate signifies an Ace. Carlos Silva, Kevin Slowey and Phil Hughes had low 4% walk rates. That said, Lopez is our ace in the same way Berrios was, even though another pitcher may be pitching better at any given time (right now Joe Ryan). Does the article mention anything about Lopez’s dip in velocity in a recent game or two, or anything about his comments thereof? I would be interested in exclusive information like that. @Matthew Trueblood

    Wasn’t there a list of ‘honorable mentions’ we could also disparage? This thread had such potential. 🙂 I’ll just say that Kirilloff belongs at first base, not in the outfield. He has not been great at first base recently either, that I’ve seen, but first base is his position. It’s probably too late but I’d like to see the team show more confidence in some of their young guys and give them run as full time players. Kirilloff seems like a guy who would respond well to that. It looks like he has overcome his wrist issues and we should be glad about that. See if we can lock him in, instead of hiding him on the bench every time a lefty comes around. The obsession with platoon splits is ridiculous too but I will save that for the ‘Rocco’s Top 5 Platoon Split Nightmares’ article. It’s amazing the guy gets any sleep at all.

    Never seen a better second half of basketball than the Wolves just played, in Game 7 in Denver tonight. I used to mock the NBA for being a game of one on one and individual performances and stuff like that, but that was not what we saw here. Athleticism, defense, creating shots, making shots (finally), perseverance, everything. wow it got a little weird in the final couple minutes but Denver looked beat at that point. Yes! Save me a seat on the bandwagon!

    The radio guys were gushing over Buxton’s speed creating that run in the 9th. True enough, but Buxton looked out on the force at second, which would have ended the game. And then got caught in the rundown but caught a break. Speaking of rundowns, it’s crazy that Julien just stood at his position when Gimenez was hung out to dry between second and third. If you are an infielder (including pitcher) and not being useful during a play, and there’s a base uncovered, go cover the empty base. Correa took off following Gimenez when Gimenez broke for third, which was the right play. But then Correa had to go back and cover second when Julien wasn’t there. That might have thrown off Vazquez that no one was really at the bag. Correa and Julien have this weird thing where Correa seems to do all the work on any difficult or unusual play that isn’t straightforward cut & dry. Not good!

    Who broke this payroll information news in the first place? I don’t recall it being Pohlad. I think the Twins are in decent shape—this year anyway.

    This is partly why I mentioned Andrew Miller. I think Varland would work really well in that type of role, as a guy who comes in firing and pitches through 5 or 6 batters sometime around the 6th, 7th innings. I think that was the plan for Varland in the postseason last year but the games didn’t really pan out for that to happen.

    When Falvey came over from Cleveland, it was very exciting. Cleveland had Kluber and some other guys, picked up Andrew Miller, and turned Cody Allen into a top closer. Maybe we thought Falvey could do the same thing here. When Falvey came over from Cleveland, nobody had even heard of Shane Bieber yet—and now Bieber is a washed up veteran already on his way out to make room for the new guys. 🙂

    I think for most fans who just want to be a fan and cheer on the Twins, then no, it probably doesn’t matter how your team acquires its pitchers. Otherwise, yes it might be worthwhile to think about scouting and how pitching is acquired. Trades and free agency are far more risky and expensive than the amateur draft.

    Yes, these photos were found by Matt Shoemaker back in 2021. They were passed on to Pagan in 2022, who gave them to Joey Gallo last year. Hey, someone every year needs to keep these pictures safe 🙂

    I was thinking about this too and said the same thing at the same time you did, before changing it. Is the ball really secure just because it’s in the guys glove? In football yes, the play would be over if he’s on the ground. In baseball I would say no, not as long as there is a baserunner.

    It’s not on the Twins to do anything there, not in my opinion. Another umpire on another day might have stopped play, though the umpire was justified in letting play continue. I think it’s on Seattle to do something. No one on Seattle was the quick thinker there. Seems like there was a moment where the first baseman might have thrown his arms up, and gotten the umpire to stop play. Or maybe the manager shouts and jumps out of the dugout. the crowd was cheering…… Love the article and would like to see more individual plays broken down this way, plays that potentially swing the game.
