The Twins Almanac for June 22
mikelink45 replied to Matt Johnson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I enjoy every comment on Pascual - my first favorite Twins pitcher. -
I didn't know pitchers were allowed to go nine any more. Way to go Ober! Loved it. Nice game all around.

My answer is none. I keep reading all these who we should trade fors and I keep thinking why do we want to trade what we have when we're doing well and have the potential to fill the positions that we need with skilled players in our minor leagues. When we have access at a position we should trade from that strength. But I don't like the idea of getting short-term players for long-term prospects. We aren't desperate.

I have a hard time predicting what this front office will do so I'm curious. There are a lot of different options both in pitching and in positions. I know what I would do, but that seldom what they would do.

I really think that zebby's stock rises every week. I definitely look at him as our number one pitching prospect at the moment

So...What Do the Twins Do With Caleb Thielbar?
mikelink45 replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am afraid this is about winning, not what you did in the past. Okert has not looked that good, they failed with Jackson. Can we afford to be lenient? I can't answer that, but I suspect that he will answer it himself in the next two weeks.- 19 replies

Before the season we speculated about having potentially the best BP - we don't. Jackson was a star acquisition until he actually pitched. Okert is not looking good, Thielbar is far from the pitcher we have had. It is time to fix the pen again.

When do Lee and Wallner come up. If Kepler is out Wallner is a natural replacement. Who does Lee replace? What a nice conundrum. Like the last poster I am puzzled over the Jackson DFA and wonder why it didn't happen earlier.

Interesting. I really don't follow all the RP in the league so it helps to have this primer. Not sure what we have to give up and I do not like the RP with five years since it means FA and costs go up. If we give something up I want more than a half year.

I totally disagree - I feel like this is one of those columns where you want to get emotional and, therefore, lots of comments. Since I feel that analytics are overrated. One size, one set of mathematics does not mean success. I would take Arraez on my team - think of the TD articles on Julien. He was supposed to supplant Arraez - we wanted that kind of player. But there are only so many. Arraez has recently been compared to Gwynn and Carew - I would take them on my team too. Yes I like BA - but I will not bother with my prejudice for this measurement, I just respect the player who knows how to control the bat and get on base through hits which have the advantage over walks in that it can induce errors and it can move other runners multiple bases. Now you have gotten an emotional response and this is as silly as saying Correa is overrated.

This is a really great team win - coming back must charge up the team like it does the fans. Yes, I am concerned about Lopez. Why is he so inconsistent? Ryan has to take over the Ace role. And I am still questioning the Jackson move - good comment in your essay Ted. Let's keep it going a nice winning streak and hopefully no more losing streaks. Kiriloff is cursed - like Buxton he will never have the total career we all expected and hoped for.

Who Says No To The Athletic's Proposed Twins Trade For Alonso - I DO!
mikelink45 commented on LA Vikes Fan's blog entry in LA Vikes Fan
There are a lot of speculating articles all over including TD - the only goal of them is to get your attention - this one succeeded and is a joke. No - move on. -
These questions are not very compelling. My questions are - will they bring Wallner back? Can Julien regain his position? Is Kiriloff in need of a really long reset? If Paddock tires does Varland or Festa take his place? Will Varland go to the pen, is Jackson really someone we count on?

Unfortunately what stands out most is how many injuries have set back this class. I still think Lewis is the best and hope Green can reach his potential.

Let's keep beating the bad teams - we need all the wins we can get. I was at the Blue Jays - Cleveland game tonight and I saw Cleveland win - again. And I am still not sure how they are doing it, but I do not think they are going to fade - we have to catch them.

I am mystified by the DFA of Castillo and the recall of Jackson. You have not convinced me that this is a good call. At this point losing Thielbar would have been a better option, but letting Jackson prove it for a couple more weeks might have been the best decision. Your Yankee story was very good. My take on this is that we have a fixation with strikeouts on both offense and defense. If the off repeated canard that a strikeout is no worse than a ground out/fly out then the pitcher who gets a ground ball out is just as valuable as the flame throwing strikeout artist who gives up fly balls that go a long, long way.

I asked this question in the minor league report - what are the hitting coaches doing in MPLS? Wallner, Kiriloff, Julien have all been sent down for hitting issues. That is a lot of potential being lost. I think they had no choice but to send Alex down - but it is time to assess the massive coaching team for their abilities too.

A fascinating report - I looked at the DFA for Diego Castillo who had 0.1 WAR in his brief time up and a 2.57 era and we drop him for Jackson who in his Twins time had a -0.8 WAR and a 6.94 era with a lifetime era of 4.23. I am still trying to figure this out. Was Jackson that outstanding in the minors? Time for Rayne Doncon to move up again. I am fascinated by him and he seems to have so much potential. I feel bad for Kiriloff. But having both Kiriloff and Julien sent down my question is - what at the batting coaches in Mpls doing? The next question is - can Martin establish himself this time?

Of course we should. Analytics does not matter if you lose. "At a boys" for players who are expected to be your Ace are not good enough. We are 40% of the way through the season and struggling to be above .500 - he is a career .500 pitcher with a 4.01 ERA and -0.2 WAR for the year. Of course he will pitch some great games and we will celebrate, but he is not an ACE except for the Twins. And like the discussion about Correa - we overrate him, but he is all we can afford so let's cheer him on and be happy we have someone who is a good pitcher, just not a great one.
-
Yes he is overrated, but he also very good. When compared to the list of SS that were signed in his first FA year he was not at the top and the subsequent failure of other teams to sign him the second time left the Twins with an opportunity to overpay to get someone they really needed. I am fine with this because the other poll on this Athletic summary showed only 2.3% of players would choose to play for the Twins. So to get stars we need to extend and pay a premium. But in the end I would choose Buxton as our most overrated. Fox sports lists the 10 best SS in MLB: Corey Seager, Texas Rangers. ... Mookie Betts, Los Angeles Dodgers. ... Francisco Lindor, New York Mets. ... Trea Turner, Philadelphia Phillies. ... Gunnar Henderson, Baltimore Orioles. ... Bobby Witt Jr., Kansas City Royals. ... Bo Bichette, Toronto Blue Jays. ... Dansby Swanson, Chicago Cubs. Bleacher Reports in 2023 rated the Shortstops and had Correa at number 17. But for us he is number one.

Twins Minor League Report (6/11): Kernels Pop Off Lugnuts
mikelink45 replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
How nice to see the prospect list with every player getting hits! Can you tell me about Jay Harry - his name surprised me in ST and it seems like most days I read about him in your summaries. Is he a top prospect now?- 12 replies
