Falvey wants to win, of course he does. However, his job is to run the team in accordance with ownerships direction and goals. If he's told winning is secondary to generating a profit then he'll do his utmost to maximize profit while fielding the best team possible under the financial limitations. If he's not on board with the direction he can elect to leave. The idea he's sending messages to ownership through the press is laughable. Buxton wants to win and I doubt he gives a flip about the owners finances. He's been clear he wants to stay in MN but nothing is holding him to that if ownership's financial demands result in a full tear down. Changing your mind when the circumstances change is anyone's prerogative and in this case would it would be perfectly reasonable. Falvey is not going to publicly announce a teardown; we'll find out when the deals happen. I expect to see Ryan, Lopez, and eventually Buxton traded.

Correct on both counts, but in accordance with your first point I believe the second condition is temporary. It appears to me the Twins are positioning to attempt to compete in 2028 with a new CBA and ideally a new ownership group. I'm prepared to watch a sub-$70M team in 2026, enjoy the clown show, and hope the young talent isn't permanently damaged by the experience.

This is the most likely scenario, in my opinion. Trade everyone over the minimum and rebuild after the lockout. I would also predict the resulting 2026 Twins team will not have the worst record in the league.

I agree, but I'm going to play devils advocate. We saw Rocco completely change his approach to running after the deadline. Appeared he saw his previous risk averse philosophy was actually adding risk. Thrown out or left standing (or doubled off)....there are downsides to passivity on the bases, esp. with our contact challenged hitters. Bottom line, people can change and even the most stubborn may eventually figure it out. Maybe, just maybe, Falvey realizes his micro management of the on field product has not succeeded and the way forward is to hire a strong manager and let him manage. I don't think this is likely but it is not impossible.

BREAKING: Twins Dismiss Manager Rocco Baldelli
shimrod replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins record is 70-92. Who thinks, based on talent, the Twins were actually a 65 win team and Rocco added value? So far, reading this page, I've learned that the manager is not responsible for player development, choosing coaches, or strategy. Some doubt he sets the lineup. Half the contributors to this site would do a better job of filling out a lineup card. Any who feel it's idiotic to play the infield in in the first inning would set better strategy. Any who thinks it's wise to let young talent face same handed pitching early in their career would be better at player development. We'll likely get the cheapest feasible manager available and it's highly likely that manager contributes to winning more than Rocco. -
BREAKING: Twins Dismiss Manager Rocco Baldelli
shimrod replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ideally they improve. The Twins young players haven't. Call it development, call it improvement, whatever. Twins youngsters haven't done it. They more often regress. The manager, responsible for both players and coaches, has to bear some responsibility for improving and optimizing the play of the team. -
BREAKING: Twins Dismiss Manager Rocco Baldelli
shimrod replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Designating Buxton as player-manager would not shock me. Provided, of course, Byron doesn't expect a raise along with the additional responsibility. -
Current ownership is tearing it all down and pocketing the cash. Next ownership starts from scratch. Ideally current FO turns over a stocked farm system, to include the proceeds from trading Ryan and Lopez and possibly Buxton. We need to focus our hopes for contention on the post-lockout Twins. Until then I'll enjoy the clown show.

Team fundamentals steadily degraded through Gardenhire's tenure. It frustrated me no end to hear the announcers, every game, talk about the Twins playing "the right way" and "doing the little things". Meanwhile on the field the team was missing the cutoff and kicking the ball around. Gardy coasted on Kelly's coattails for years. Still better than Rocco though.

"...baseball has a huge, urgent duty to speak up each September..." No, they don't. Baseball, and any other business, needs to stay in its lane and avoid politics as much as possible. Leave politics to the politicians and activists. It's bad business to lecture people on how they should think, act, feel. For every customer who agrees with the spin there's another who won't. Activists feel they're right and feel that people who don't agree are wrong. Wrong thinkers need to be educated and, if they resist, shamed into right think. That's your prerogative as a private citizen and you can advocate until the cows come home, it doesn't cost you a thing. MLB is in the business of making money and lecturing the customers on social justice issues is not conducive to profit. Note that I'm not commenting on the virtue of your cause. Just saying your suggestion that MLB join your crusade is not in their best interest.

You might be kidding but the Twins aren't. I expect Jeffers to be gone and his replacement will not be an upgrade. Vasquez resigning on a minimal deal might be the only thing that keeps Gasper off the 2026 roster.

Twins value defensive versatility over defensive quality. You can have one or the other, not both. Twins have, recently, shown signs of adapting to the modern (throwback) game. They're running and bunting. Perhaps they'll begin to allow their players to focus on and master a primary position.

What changed is the traded players were replaced with AAAA players discarded by contenders. If we had cleared the decks to give opportunity to our top prospects you could see a path to relevancy. Now it's clear the deadline was a straight up salary dump.

This is my expectation, at least until a new CBA. Ryan, Lopez, Larnach and possibly Jeffers gone. Those clamoring to see the kids brought up will get their wish. Falvey and Rocco will be retained if only to keep from paying two salaries at those positions. I expect payroll to settle somewhere in the low 60s.

Twins (López) vs Royals (Wacha): 9/5/25, 6:40pm
shimrod replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
Bingo. I'm actually enjoying these games. Although the organization is trying to lose the players are trying to win and I still see, every game, incredible athletic plays you won't see in any other league. The FO isn't trying to win, and with that in mind I don't care if they do either. Wins are preferable but I'm not getting bent out of shape when they don't happen. I can enjoy the good plays, laugh at the bad plays, and in the end none of it matters. Let me add, I'm out of the local area watching MLB.tv. No way I'd pay to watch this in person. -
If it wasn't clear, this is the plan. Davis, Kriskie, et al are performing exactly as Falvey expects and desires.

How Can the Twins Win Back Fans and Fix their PR Issues?
shimrod replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think they've chosen path three. Assume 2027 season doesn't happen. Cut to the bone, write off 2026 and 2027, start your plan 2 under a new CBA. -
How Can the Twins Win Back Fans and Fix their PR Issues?
shimrod replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I'd say they've thoroughly proven winning is in distant second place to making money. Might be third place. I get the impression ownership actually resents the fan base. They want us to buy the tickets, buy the food and drink, buy the paraphernalia, then shut up and accept whatever product the team chooses to put on the field. -
All according to plan. Twins organization is trying to tank for draft odds while maintaining a "try to win" attitude in the players. Davis in the pen? Check. Martin at second? Check. Gasper on the roster? Check. Outman? Check. The big question is will the team try to double up on tank seasons through the expected lockout in 2027. If they trade Ryan and Lopez we could be looking at a sub- $70M payroll in 2026. Draft another top five prospect and reset under a new CBA.

Machado may be the worst loafer I've ever seen on an MLB ballfield. I'm still enjoying the post-deadline Twins more than the previous iteration. And yes, I did watch the game yesterday.
