" This is exactly backward. The false narrative is that women can be as batshit crazy (sure, call it eccentric) as they want to be and they will still be an object of matrimonial pursuit for normal guys. It's harmful and destructive only to people who expect reality to play out just like the standard rom-com.

    A month ago I expected a $70M payroll or less this year. Now I think you're right. Pretend to contend for half a season, trade everyone making more than the minimum, and enter the lockout at $60M MLB payroll and a ton of prospects.

    Correct. Bottom line the FO is lying about their intentions. We can hope the FO is only lying to the fan base and not lying to themselves. If they think they're going to field a competitive team by building around the "core" with whatever scraps remain after free agency they're frankly delusional. I still think the intent is to trade Ryan, Lopez, Buxton, and likely Jeffers. Rebuild after the CBA is settled.

    We hear it. Question is who believes it? It's not a good negotiating tactic to admit every player making more than rookie or vet minimum will be jettisoned. Pretending you want to contend will ideally result in slightly better offers. Slightly. The game is won at the margins.

    Yeah, that no trade clause means Buxton is only as cheap as he wants to be. Buxton should demand a hefty salary increase. If that reduces the return to the Twins...why should Buxton care?

    Yes, Twins have a hole at first because they've made no effort to develop a solution. Twins philosophy is put your worst defender at first base regardless of fit. Butchers like Julien, midgets like Solano and Arraez. Based on TD reports that philosophy extends to the minors, where DH candidates and OF sloths man the position. Size doesn't matter much in baseball except at first, where a couple extra inches of reach makes the entire infield better. Every year I hear about a minor league SS prospect who may "grow out of" the position. Please put a couple of those guys at first base starting in A ball and develop an honest to god plus defensive first baseman. It won't help us in 26 or 27 but eventually it should pay off.

Not one of the current collection is an everyday player on a contender. Maybe one of the prospects is that guy but the success rate of our former prospects (current incumbents), is not inspiring.

    I think a lot of the complaints are perception the team is doing the right thing for the wrong reason. I'm looking forward to watching the young guys but I know the reason I'm getting that opportunity is ownerships demand to dramatically cut payroll. Still, I'd rather watch an ambitious young prospect than a marginal veteran who's only here because he couldn't catch on with a competitive team. There are also fair complaints that the team traded away the bullpen for a collection of suspects. Playing the youth is great when they're actual prospects, not roster dumps.

    Has the FO said anything to indicate he's a backup? Jeffers replacement is also a possibility. I understand the minimal track record says backup only but I think folks are underestimating just how low ownership wants the payroll.

    Falvey wants to win, of course he does. However, his job is to run the team in accordance with ownerships direction and goals. If he's told winning is secondary to generating a profit then he'll do his utmost to maximize profit while fielding the best team possible under the financial limitations. If he's not on board with the direction he can elect to leave. The idea he's sending messages to ownership through the press is laughable. Buxton wants to win and I doubt he gives a flip about the owners finances. He's been clear he wants to stay in MN but nothing is holding him to that if ownership's financial demands result in a full tear down. Changing your mind when the circumstances change is anyone's prerogative and in this case would it would be perfectly reasonable. Falvey is not going to publicly announce a teardown; we'll find out when the deals happen. I expect to see Ryan, Lopez, and eventually Buxton traded.

    Is he completely washed up? If so an overpay may get it done. It's organizational malpractice that the Twins have not even tried to develop a first baseman. They seem perfectly comfortable staffing first with whoever demonstrates they can't handle second and the occasional leftover from FA.

    I'm prepared for a payroll much lower than that. And that's ok.

    Correct on both counts, but in accordance with your first point I believe the second condition is temporary. It appears to me the Twins are positioning to attempt to compete in 2028 with a new CBA and ideally a new ownership group. I'm prepared to watch a sub-$70M team in 2026, enjoy the clown show, and hope the young talent isn't permanently damaged by the experience.

    This is the most likely scenario, in my opinion. Trade everyone over the minimum and rebuild after the lockout. I would also predict the resulting 2026 Twins team will not have the worst record in the league.

    I agree, but I'm going to play devils advocate. We saw Rocco completely change his approach to running after the deadline. Appeared he saw his previous risk averse philosophy was actually adding risk. Thrown out or left standing (or doubled off)....there are downsides to passivity on the bases, esp. with our contact challenged hitters. Bottom line, people can change and even the most stubborn may eventually figure it out. Maybe, just maybe, Falvey realizes his micro management of the on field product has not succeeded and the way forward is to hire a strong manager and let him manage. I don't think this is likely but it is not impossible.

    Twins record is 70-92. Who thinks, based on talent, the Twins were actually a 65 win team and Rocco added value? So far, reading this page, I've learned that the manager is not responsible for player development, choosing coaches, or strategy. Some doubt he sets the lineup. Half the contributors to this site would do a better job of filling out a lineup card. Any who feel it's idiotic to play the infield in in the first inning would set better strategy. Any who thinks it's wise to let young talent face same handed pitching early in their career would be better at player development. We'll likely get the cheapest feasible manager available and it's highly likely that manager contributes to winning more than Rocco.

    Ideally they improve. The Twins young players haven't. Call it development, call it improvement, whatever. Twins youngsters haven't done it. They more often regress. The manager, responsible for both players and coaches, has to bear some responsibility for improving and optimizing the play of the team.

    Designating Buxton as player-manager would not shock me. Provided, of course, Byron doesn't expect a raise along with the additional responsibility.
