  1. This is the kind of content that I really enjoy from TD. It’s great to follow the minor leaguers as they progress though the system. Watching the success that Matthews is having in rising through the system via these stories is great. Thanks TD!
  2. Excellent article, Hans. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this!
  3. Great article, John. You should think about writing for this site more often. 😁 I think it depends on how much faith they have in Julien or Lee to hit at the top of the order for the foreseeable future and where their trade value lies right now. They hit a small lottery ticket with Castro and should either attempt to sign him to a reasonable deal - $24 mil at 4 yrs - or trade him while his value is at its peak and bring up the young guys to let them fly.
  4. The one common thread in all of these “Let’s make a Deal” articles is that the authors mention the Twine tinkering with a pitcher to make him more effective. I’m not saying the Twins wouldn’t be able to take a different approach to unlock something but I doubt it’s going to take place in the half season leading up to the playoffs when they’ll need them most. I don’t think we’re close enough to be considered a contending team with the uneven season we’ve had so far. IF we are going to make a trade I think a mid rotation starter or better is really what we need right now. To get that we’re going to be looking at giving up a Jenkins, a Lee, a Rodriguez, a Lee or a combo of some of them. Unless the team has plans of increasing the payroll again in the coming seasons I see no way we can afford to trade prospects and pay big time pitchers that we haven’t developed. If we go on a tear for the next month and it looks like we’re one player away I’d consider a big name pitcher at that point and I’d be willing to pay for that pitcher in prospect capital.
  5. What about when they were in Bloomington at the Old Met? 🤔
  6. The only one I’d really consider right now is Margot. I’d prefer to see Austin Martin getting a long run. He wasn’t spectacular but was holding his own and bringing something different to the lineup. Depending on how Topa looks over his next few appearances I would imagine that Jackson is actually more likely to be let go. The FO has a history of juggling relievers and hanging on to the veteran position players. The rest on the list will have much longer leashes for varying reasons.
  7. Completely different body types could play into this too. Soto has a big frame that could lend itself to a more regular starter’s workload. I don’t mind using a little caution with the price of pitching but Raya has been a little overboard. I’d be satisfied with Soto getting his feet wet with four inning outings early in the season and ramping up to five to six by the end of his first year.
  8. Looking for Rocco to put a little trust in Martin and give him some significant AB’s to see what he has. I’d like to see him platooning at second and left and hitting in the nine hole to turn the lineup over.
  9. I think we’ve got enough depth to withstand injuries to every position except for starting pitching. I think Varland will be fine as the fifth starter and has plenty of upside. I just think it would have been much better to start him in triple A with a more seasoned, and healthy, option than DeSclafani on the big league squad.
  10. If ownership is willing to expand payroll then a one year deal..not multiple…for Lorenzen makes sense. If not, I’d like to see them give Varland a shot. The upside of more than a fifth starter is there with him. If we’re only worried about filling innings with a fifth starter there will be plenty of those guys hanging around in another month like Hill, Keuchel, etc.
  11. I think it’s another thing small and mid market teams need to get right. If you’re the Yankees you can more easily buy your way out of Donaldson if you don’t like the fit. If you’re the Twins it’s a much tougher pill to swallow when trading or buying your way out. And let’s be honest, we’re MN. We like nice. 😊
  12. If converting Durán was a real possibility they should have already had conversations about stretching him out and developing those additional pitches in the offseason. We’re rapidly approaching reporting day for pitchers and catchers. I don’t have a problem with the concept but timing wise I don’t think it’s in the cards for this season unless they plan to start slowly and build up throughout early part of the season. Three innings per start in April, four innings in May, etc.
  13. Great work! Always enjoy getting my Friday started off with a belly laugh.
  14. Great article. It reinforces the truth that small to mid market front offices need to be that much better than their large market counterparts when making trades and drafting. They just don’t have that ability to buy their way out of mistakes. I’m not apologizing for any billionaire owners but until the day where a salary cap comes in to play there will always be this issue. Overall I think Falvey and crew have done a good job. There have been misses to be sure but we’re in a decent position with the current squad and the farm system. We all want a big trade or FA signing to talk about and I’m willing to bet that the front office will do the right thing this offseason to keep the window open.
  15. I don’t like the idea of acquiring a 4-5 starter by trade, even if controllable for a couple of years. That’s especially true if we need to use one of our own close to MLB ready pitching prospects to make it happen. If we’re going to part with prospects I’d much rather package a couple high prospects and pay the freight to get a Gilbert or Luzardo. Otherwise pickup a free agent backend starter and hope to hit on him or roll with what we have.
  16. Absolutely on board with this. I’ve advocated for these types of deals for the Twins for a while. If we’re going to continue to operate from a payroll standpoint as the mid market team we are, we need to share some risk with our young prospects and hope we hit on them. We really haven’t seen this done with pitchers across MLB (Dobnak’s oddball contract excluded) but I would entertain that as well if we feel confident in a young arm. The risk might be higher for the team but the reward would be greater in the later years if salaries keep skyrocketing.
  17. I agree with the article and think Vazquez is worth his contract. The problem simply goes back to the team saying they plan to reduce payroll. If you don’t trade one of Vázquez, Kepler or Polanco where does the reduction come from? Farmer isn’t enough if we’re going to create enough space to add a #2-3 starter. We’re going to have to move multiple players. Tough decisions ahead.
  18. We can go down some of these trade trees for years but with the Gray-Petty trade we’re likely getting a Comp A pick back when Gray signs elsewhere. If that pick turns out greater than or equal to Petty we really nailed that one.
  19. If the Brewers are really willing to trade anyone it seems they’re likely looking at a complete rebuild. They might I’m be interested in Festa but I’m not sure why they’d be interested in Polanco as he wouldn’t be a part of a long term plan. And I’m not interested in including a hitting prospect and a pitching prospect for Burnes unless he guarantees an extension with us. I think it’s much more likely we look at someone like Seattle and pay a high prospect price for one of their young, controllable pitchers.
  20. Unless the Twins philosophy is going through a major overhaul the gamble on a one year rental star just doesn’t work….especially with pitching. I’m all for packaging Polanco and/or Kepler with high prospects but it needs to be for a younger pitcher with team control such as what Seattle might have available. The one year of savings for moving Polanco/Kepler doesn’t free up $20+/year needed for a multi year extension to keep them around for our opening contention window.
  21. While I understand the premise of the article and agree with some of the points, there are no positives to reducing payroll. There could be opportunities for some players but those come at the expense of flexibility in adding proven players. I hope payroll lands closer to $140 than $125 so Falvey can be at least a little creative.
  22. The baseball gods giveth and they taketh away. It took much too long for the giveth part but the taketh, not so much. See you in the spring!
  23. I live in Madelia (thanks for the shout out!) and was at both games. Didn’t leave early but do know a couple of Wenner’s. 🤣
  24. You just HAD to bring up Cuzzi…😂
