If ownership is willing to expand payroll then a one year deal..not multiple…for Lorenzen makes sense. If not, I’d like to see them give Varland a shot. The upside of more than a fifth starter is there with him. If we’re only worried about filling innings with a fifth starter there will be plenty of those guys hanging around in another month like Hill, Keuchel, etc.

I think it’s another thing small and mid market teams need to get right. If you’re the Yankees you can more easily buy your way out of Donaldson if you don’t like the fit. If you’re the Twins it’s a much tougher pill to swallow when trading or buying your way out. And let’s be honest, we’re MN. We like nice. 😊

If converting Durán was a real possibility they should have already had conversations about stretching him out and developing those additional pitches in the offseason. We’re rapidly approaching reporting day for pitchers and catchers. I don’t have a problem with the concept but timing wise I don’t think it’s in the cards for this season unless they plan to start slowly and build up throughout early part of the season. Three innings per start in April, four innings in May, etc.

Great article. It reinforces the truth that small to mid market front offices need to be that much better than their large market counterparts when making trades and drafting. They just don’t have that ability to buy their way out of mistakes. I’m not apologizing for any billionaire owners but until the day where a salary cap comes in to play there will always be this issue. Overall I think Falvey and crew have done a good job. There have been misses to be sure but we’re in a decent position with the current squad and the farm system. We all want a big trade or FA signing to talk about and I’m willing to bet that the front office will do the right thing this offseason to keep the window open.

I don’t like the idea of acquiring a 4-5 starter by trade, even if controllable for a couple of years. That’s especially true if we need to use one of our own close to MLB ready pitching prospects to make it happen. If we’re going to part with prospects I’d much rather package a couple high prospects and pay the freight to get a Gilbert or Luzardo. Otherwise pickup a free agent backend starter and hope to hit on him or roll with what we have.

Absolutely on board with this. I’ve advocated for these types of deals for the Twins for a while. If we’re going to continue to operate from a payroll standpoint as the mid market team we are, we need to share some risk with our young prospects and hope we hit on them. We really haven’t seen this done with pitchers across MLB (Dobnak’s oddball contract excluded) but I would entertain that as well if we feel confident in a young arm. The risk might be higher for the team but the reward would be greater in the later years if salaries keep skyrocketing.

Let's Not Overlook the Value of Christian Vázquez
Hrbeks Divot replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with the article and think Vazquez is worth his contract. The problem simply goes back to the team saying they plan to reduce payroll. If you don’t trade one of Vázquez, Kepler or Polanco where does the reduction come from? Farmer isn’t enough if we’re going to create enough space to add a #2-3 starter. We’re going to have to move multiple players. Tough decisions ahead. -
We can go down some of these trade trees for years but with the Gray-Petty trade we’re likely getting a Comp A pick back when Gray signs elsewhere. If that pick turns out greater than or equal to Petty we really nailed that one.

If the Brewers are really willing to trade anyone it seems they’re likely looking at a complete rebuild. They might I’m be interested in Festa but I’m not sure why they’d be interested in Polanco as he wouldn’t be a part of a long term plan. And I’m not interested in including a hitting prospect and a pitching prospect for Burnes unless he guarantees an extension with us. I think it’s much more likely we look at someone like Seattle and pay a high prospect price for one of their young, controllable pitchers.

Should the Twins Swap Infield Depth for an Ace?
Hrbeks Divot replied to Hunter McCall's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Unless the Twins philosophy is going through a major overhaul the gamble on a one year rental star just doesn’t work….especially with pitching. I’m all for packaging Polanco and/or Kepler with high prospects but it needs to be for a younger pitcher with team control such as what Seattle might have available. The one year of savings for moving Polanco/Kepler doesn’t free up $20+/year needed for a multi year extension to keep them around for our opening contention window. -
The Positive of Reducing Payroll
Hrbeks Divot replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
While I understand the premise of the article and agree with some of the points, there are no positives to reducing payroll. There could be opportunities for some players but those come at the expense of flexibility in adding proven players. I hope payroll lands closer to $140 than $125 so Falvey can be at least a little creative.- 35 replies

Twins Go Two Days Without an Injury

Love the piece but let’s hope the satire is the only injury news we have to read about during the playoffs unless it’s the “returning from injury” kind. -
What Does Kody Funderburk Look Like?
Hrbeks Divot replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thunderburk? I prefer Thunderstruck if he’s changing names for competition. Plus he’s got a ready made entrance song if he becomes a closer! 🤘🏼 -
I’m all for optimism and enjoy your writing, Nick. I’m just looking at this one day at a time right now. Win the division, win A playoff game and then keep winning playoff games. Then we can worry about the off-season and the next three seasons. Maybe it’s the MN sports fan in me that won’t let me look that far into the future. It seems in this state past performances are generally indicative of future results when it comes to playoff success.

Twins Claim Outfielder Jordan Luplow
Hrbeks Divot replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I had to make sure this wasn’t Randball’s Stu’s second article of the day. -
Target, yes. Likely, no. Too many other teams out there with pitching depth that the Cardinals want and need. The Twins need to find someone looking for lefty batting outfielders and Twins fans need to be realistic about what we can expect at the deadline. Give something to get something. I don’t think SWR or Louie Varland is going to get it done and the Cards want major league or close to major league pitching.
