    “By holding back on extensions for players like Lewis, Miranda, and Lee at their respective peaks, the Twins may have preserved both payroll flexibility and roster optionality.” The problem here is that the Twins have capitalized on neither. They haven’t spent the payroll they saved and they’ve locked themselves into an inflexible roster this year. I’d be fine with them taking a chance or two on pre-arb deals but if they won’t, they sure don’t seem to be jumping on the benefits being touted on the article.

    He won’t make his debut until June at the earliest. Emma will get first crack if he’s healthy. I could actually see the Twins waiting until 2027 to debut Jenkins so they have a shot at getting an extra draft pick with a ROY win.

    I don’t mind the idea but if we go that route then I also think we need to go full tear down. Are we realistically going to be able to sign Joe Ryan to a long term extension? Get more young talent for him and Jeffers now that lines up with the 28-30 timeframe. Let Buck decide if he wants to ride it out or look for trading partners for him as well.

    I’ll be the Charlie Brown and hope the football doesn’t get pulled this time. Tom has a year to prove to me there are changes coming. Might we win the division? Yes, but only because nobody wants to jump up and grab it. If Skubal is traded it’s even more of a toss up. I’m fine with not trading any more veterans but I’d like to see a long term extension offer for Ryan and a three year de lobfor Jeffers. After that we roll with what we have, hope the kids arrive and augment with free agents in 27 to really open the window.

    While I agree that Ohl should get an opportunity for one of the final bullpen spots, if he’s getting save opportunities next year we’re in for another long season. His four seam and cutter aren’t nearly good enough, at this time, for that role. Let’s hope he’s taken a step in the offseason to be a middle innings guy for us.

    I think $130 gets them closer to 87-89 wins and a wild card but the long term outlook is still the same unless they commit to even slightly increasing payroll in the future. I hate to see a complete tear down but where they are is worse. I’ve been saying for a while that if they trade one of Ryan or Lopez they need to trade them both. Then follow that with Buxton and Jeffers. Hope the FO and scouts have a long term plan in place with a contention window opening in 28 and lasting a few years.

    I agree. The work stoppage possibility is the only thing that gives me pause. Otherwise I think a 3-yr, $30 Mil extension would be a good investment.

    One trend I see in the article is that our coaches seem to go to larger markets. That typically equals larger payrolls and better talent. I know I’m generalizing but it’s easier to coach better players, right? Sure those teams have disappointing outcomes too but overall it’s easier to buy the next great player. If the Twins have a $200 million payroll it stands to reason they’re more successful and this, the coaches look like they are doing a better job. Maybe some of these guys actually were successful here and got the most they could out of the talent level they had to work with.

    In my mind there is no question the Twins are rebuilding if even two of these three are traded. If they cut payroll again or even stay flat with the end of the season then their window of contention might begin to open again in 2027. They might as well rip the band aid off and move Ober as well if they can get anything close to a fair return. Start to bring up the kids and hope you’ve got someone to develop them into the next core. It would be difficult to watch but I’d rather they go that route instead of claiming they are retooling with low end veteran hitters and scrap heap relievers.

    Great article, Alex. Many fans, understandably, are very emotional right now. It’s starts at the top with ownership. If they are willing to spend the money for talent, it’s incumbent upon the FO to use those funds to hit on impact players. At that point the onus IS on the manager to take full advantage of the tools he has to use. Right now it’s about leadership communication and team building.. if he can impart some wisdom and awareness on the younger group coming up that will be a win. Until things change with Ownership and the FO, that should be what we hope for and expect.

    Great article. I believe that IF the Twins trade Pablo they SHOULD also trade Ryan. I don’t want to see terrible baseball over the next two years but if Pablo goes the Pohlads are signaling it’s about the money. At that point we might as well trade for the best talent we can get and hope the stars align with the kids in 28.

    No issue whatsoever with Pablo coming back to pitch this year. As laid out by other comments and your own article, the injuries were totally unrelated. He’s one of the few remaining leaders on the team. Regardless of whether his remaining starts could be used as a showcase for an offseason trade, he wanted to be out there and was healthy enough to pitch. He stepped up as a leader and led.

    Firing the manager signals nothing. Raising payroll to $150M+ is the only thing that would signal any kind of change coming from the Pohlad family.

    Number 5 on the list is most important to me. If you’re going into rebuild mode then communicate it. I’d watch a 90 loss team if it was part of a stated plan. I’m a working class partial season ticket holder. I want to believe in the team but I need to know what my investment means. Tell me. Show me. Make me want to continue to care!

    I think the worst trade of the bunch was Stewart. The rest of them feel like a setup to compete in 2027 and beyond and Outman does nothing to help with that timeline. I’d rather have seen them take a flyer on someone a few years away if Stewart’s market was tepid due to injury concerns. While I hated the Varland trade for sentimental reasons I think it was a solid B on the return. Time will tell.

    Sell the expiring contracts and leave it there. Fill those spots internally and see how the young guys fare the rest of the season. Leave the pitchers alone and see how the ownership saga plays out. The next owner and next FO should be given the opportunity to build the team how they want with all the best assets at their disposal.

    Trade Julien and Miranda as part of packages to get what you can. Give Martin another shot with the big league club if you plan to move Castro. Martin might also have that role on next year’s squad if he can get on base.

    I have no problem with selling the expiring contracts. I have no interest in moving controllable assets right now with the uncertainty of the ownership and front office. If those change I’d rather have the new FO, with the possibility of a little more payroll flexibility and a different plan, use those assets in the offseason to start their build.

    I have no problem taking a chance on the guy as long as it’s not the only trade we make this season. Not sure I would have devoted an article to the move. Seems more like a footnote in the transaction section of the weekly recap.

    Joe Ryan deserves to be an All Star. Maybe as a consolation prize the Twins could sign him to a long term contract rather than trade him at the deadline. He’s a member of the core, whether now or in 2026.

    When I heard the news the first thing I thought of (as a typical MN sports fan) was a potential injury or that the derby will mess up Buck’s swing. But I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed watching him this year. He’s having so much fun with the game and it’s great to see. I’m happy for him and glad that he’s taking the opportunity while it’s there. He’s peak Buck right now and we haven’t been able to enjoy him this much for a while. I’ll cheer for him on Monday and hope he does the Twins proud. And if he injures himself? We were trending towards selling at the deadline anyway. 😏
