  1. I loved this post just because of the “work like rented mules” comment. My Dad grew up on a farm and my childhood was filled with sayings like this. My favorites were when a Twins batter would strike out with a man on third - “he couldn’t hit a pig in the ass with a spade” (for the non farmers a spade is a shovel) or if a hitter he didn’t like got a hit “even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while”. Memories…..
  2. I believe the Twins are already using the hybrid approach. They had guys skip starts and also stayed with a five man rotation early on when they could have skipped the fifth spot. No way on the 6 man rotation. I’m not taking away starts from the top three to hand them to a 6th starter. Plus I highly doubt the starters would go deeper in games so the bullpen has the same load with one fewer pitcher.
  3. You might consider a class on economics.
  4. These are always fun - thanks for writing them. I think it is interesting that a lot of these guys spent extensive time in the minors.
  5. Just when I thought the content couldn’t get wackier……
  6. Yea if you look at Varland objectively there are reasons to be doubtful. He hasn’t been good as a starter and has one short successful stint in the pen when batters had never seen him before.
  7. I had similar thoughts. I don’t think Camargo is a great prospect but he has shown more IMO than Cartaya has yet many posters / writers are ready to kick him to the curb. I think it’s the shiny new toy syndrome that has people excited about Cartaya. And as Doc noted many players don’t hit at AA. Sometimes it’s an aberration but most of the time it means the end of the line which is why I would be skeptical of Cartaya.
  8. He has shown flashes of potential and at 24 years old I hope he gets a run. I like actual performance to determine a players fate not the opinion of a FO type. There are certainly enough question marks in the back end of the bullpen to give the guy a chance.
  9. I thought WAR was considered a bad way to measure bullpens? If the Twins pen was considered 2nd best last year based on WAR then I would disregard it.
  10. This is a good point. IMO we had 4 guys that played good defense and two of them are now gone.
  11. That he has to be used in a set routine. Use him in the most critical times regardless of inning.
  12. The forget St Paul part. He absolutely needs to prove himself.
  13. If they can figure out a way to get Jax to 90 innings of mostly high leverage then he will be just as important as a good starter.
  14. How low have we sunk that we need to get excited about $2 million saved in payroll.
  15. I’m very concerned about EmRod. Big league pitchers will not let him get away with being so passive at the plate. They will attack him and force him to swing and with his swing and miss rate it’s not going to end well. Maybe he can make an adjustment but as is I’m not a fan. I like that he can be a plus corner outfielder so that gives him a little more rope. However I would trade him for a young RH outfielder that doesn’t have platoon splits. And by all means if the kid hits in St Paul give him a shot because there is only one way to know for sure.
  16. This makes no sense. Camargo isn’t a backup catcher but Cartaya is? The guy is closer to being dfa than mlb in 2025.
  17. Figuring out ways to be angry and offended is standard fare in our society these days.
  18. He and Mauer had similar experiences post concussion. They returned to play but were never the same hitters. I wouldn’t be shocked if we learn the concussed brain loses something that makes the players reflexes slightly slower or something like that.
  19. Yep. Always call BS when people start pointing to “intangibles” as the primary skill a player brings to the table.
  20. I would rather have the lottery ticket catcher than the lottery ticket pitcher given the Twins current circumstances.
  21. Thanks for writing this - something different in a slow off season. Going forward I think you need to define the objective of the exercise better. Fulfilling the vision of a winning team is pretty vague, at least to me. It seems to me that it is an asset valuation which is basically a trade valuation which you state isn’t what you are doing. Is about winning over a certain timeframe? Reminds me of people debating if a certain pitcher is an ace when they don’t define what an ace is.
  22. Just keep the guy - there is a decent chance we don’t make it out of spring training without having an injury to a starter.
  23. I think this is a very important point that isn’t getting discussed enough. Winning baseball starts with starting pitching and the Twins are in pretty good shape there.
