  1. Varland hasn’t shown anything in the bigs to be considered a starter. I don’t know there is any point in to continuing down that road, especially since he is 27 or 28? In the pen he has shown promise for an inning as he cranks up the fastball to 99. Then he starts to go downhill. My dream for him and the Twins is for him is to forget the change and two seamer and really try to add a slider that has enough bite and more of a difference mph wise from the fastball. Next I would have him try to hold back on the four seam - maybe 97 and see If that would allow him to go 2 or 3 innings something the Twins have needed for a long time. As we have seen with Alcala and others being decent for one inning only really limits value.
  2. There is more to it than stuff. He has to prove the ability to locate when facing better hitters and to compete against better hitters. IMO that is important for his development. You don’t agree with that which is fine. We are both excited about his potential as it is truly a high ceiling.
  3. The idea that he doesn’t have to prove himself in the upper minors. I’m excited about the guy but he has to prove himself against better competition before he sees the bigs.
  4. I loved this pick by the Twins even with the injury concerns. Sometimes you just have to chase the ceiling, especially with high picks. I also agree with others that we will know a lot more this year as he faces high minors competition. If he dominates upper minors and earns a call up bring him up as a starter and let him pitch 4 innings and have someone designated to piggy back him. I’ll take the quality over quantity.
  5. I excepted Lewis and Lee wasn’t on my list. No serious baseball person compared Lewis to Trout. None of the rest of those guys were that highly regarded. One source of the difference of our opinions might be that I don’t consider prospect lists as indicative of much. Regardless I think we are in agreement on the main point which is the Twins are not producing enough ball players that could be considered difference makers. I respect your opinions.
  6. I don’t believe serious baseball people considered any of those guys were can’t miss or anbove anverage every day players except Lewis. Fans get way ahead of themselves when it comes to prospects - they provide an addictive drug called hope. It’s the second string quarterback syndrome - I call it Prospect Puppy Love. Fact is most prospects fail even guys that have some success at AAA. This is especially true when they are defensively flawed and aren’t particularly athletic. So yea I do believe they are inherently flawed fielders because they don’t possess the attributes to be anything else. I do agree if they focused on one position they would be better than they are now.
  7. Lee was the wrong choice to the subject of this article when we have several others who are truly in a make or break season. Miranda, Larnach, Martin, Julien for sure and then to a lesser extent you have Wallner and Lewis. And the bar to clear is going to somewhat high because none of these guys are great fielders and most are slow or slowish runners. I still maintain that this has to be the year these guys step up or step down. We have to get these answers if we are going to take a decisive step forward.
  8. I won’t speak for others but I’m guessing many of us would have far less angst about bringing in France, Bader etc. if it was truly best man wins the playing time. The Twins seem to rely on what their analytics tell them over actual performance (at least sometimes) and it leads to head scratching decisions.
  9. Funny how Max is willing to switch positions when he needs a job.
  10. This. I don’t mind platooning for the start of the game or at the end of the game when appropriate. It’s the 5th inning move that I dislike.
  11. 3 way parlay: Buxton, Correa and Lewis all play 110 or more games. Should get some nice odds on that. I would take the over at 83.5 big time. I know we are all frustrated with the off season but this club does have some upside.
  12. I know that posters that easily fall into Prospect Puppy Love will not like your post but it is quite plausible.
  13. Respectfully disagree. It’s been 9 years and they were in charge of their drafting philosophy and who they traded. The guys that have made it to the bigs are poor defenders and don’t run well, and some aren’t proven with the bat.
  14. I keep posting this because it seems we either don’t care or are unaware. The Twins farm system has produced precious little for quite a long time. It’s a big underlying problem.
  15. I always learn something and as an older Twins fan it brings me back to my childhood.
  16. I don’t believe that Lewis has had Tommy John surgery. I do agree that it is too soon to assume he has permanent throwing problems.
  17. Your last sentence sums up the problem nicely. The problem isn’t Bader or France per se, the problem is that not enough talent has been produced by our farm system. Even the so called success stories are guys that can’t run or field particularly well. We place lots of things under the microscope on this site but this seems to have flown under the radar a bit.
  18. I like this. It’s amazing how many endless debates there have been on these boards over who is an ace or who is a number 12345 starter and never once has anybody cared to define what the debate was about 😀
  19. Does a change in tv revenue sharing have to be collectively bargained with the players union? If not, a great first step would be to pool all tv revenue and divide equally. Each franchise still keeps all other revenue so a well run franchise will still be rewarded, I know the top 4-6 teams will balk at this so here is the next part of the plan: the rest of the teams charge any team not in the revenue sharing a participation tax equal to the amount of the missing revenue sharing. Don’t want to pay the tax? Great. You can play the other 4 non revenue sharers 162 times a year while the other 28 teams have a real league with roughly equal revenue. I know this is a long shot idea but something has to change.
  20. Of all the comments on this topic this sums it up best for me. And as much as I try to stay neutral on Falvey the actual results after 9 years is just not going to cut it.
  21. I would hope and guess that if Miranda looks good this spring France will not be a factor in his playing time.
  22. I e always felt that Buck is limiting himself as a hitter when he starts with his hands so high. The bat travels a long way to get to the hitting zone which means he is going to punish some pitches but have difficulty making adjustments on other pitches.
  23. Of course we would have to define ace to be able to discuss this. Joe has improved and is much better than I thought he would be and I’ve been a fan since day 1. Put whatever label you want - to me he’s just a really good pitcher who I hope stays healthy. The rest will take care of itself.
