What Defines Success for Byron Buxton in 2024?
TNtwins85 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The only starter we’re gonna get for Buxton at this point lives in somebody’s A ball system somewhere. Unless the Twins cover his salary for the next 5 years maybe we get a 4th or 5th starter. At this point they’re stuck with him so they at least have to try to maximize his ability to stay healthy and hope they get 2WAR or better. -
What Defines Success for Byron Buxton in 2024?
TNtwins85 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’ve often wondered if moving him to one of the corners helps him out at all. All we’ve ever heard is he either plays CF, DH or the IL. I’m sure he’s more than capable to play RF or LF. If it helps him stay healthy even marginally isn’t that something the Twins would explore to maybe get another 15-20 games out of him? Maybe he’s no longer a CF as far as health goes. Maybe it doesn’t make any sense and they’ve looked into the metrics but the fact that he either plays one of two positions ONLY seems short sighted on some level. -
The only way of knowing is to actually read the contract. Maybe the dodgers aren’t even liable. Who knows without reading the language of the contract. Very interesting indeed
-
100%!!! Funny the boy genius’ Falvine haven’t done this yet! All it takes is one. The question is when does it become the norm? Maybe it doesn’t. We’ll just have to wait and see.
-
But it’s a point of negotiation. We just watched it happen. You want to be paid a dollar now. I want to pay you 50 cents. Where do we end up settling? Not to mention there’s someone else negotiating for your services. Or 2-3 other people. Person B offers you 75 cents. I offer 50. Person B really wants your services and offers $1.50. Now you think you’re worth $1.50 since you got an offer for that but I still want your services so I match $1.50. Person B offers $1.75. A simple concept but what do you think Juan Soto is thinking? Especially since he will be younger and he’s a better hitter. We’re talking the best of the best players here. This won’t be common but it sets a precedent. All I’m saying.
-
Well, this contract just sets the president. You hear Bryce Harper clamoring for more money as well. Who’s to say that next year Juan Soto doesn’t demand a billion dollars deferred for 50 years? Or the next young great player demanding more than that over 100 years that gets passed to his heirs? Without looking into the specifics of the rules and just reading that rule in the Passan tweet it’s hard to know. That rule literally just says that a player can demand anything. For real though. It sounds silly and ridiculous but if that is the only rule which it says their is no limit what’s to say that when it’s time for Walker Jenkins to hit free agency that he doesn’t demand 500 billion over 10 years that’s deferred for 500 years? Obviously there will be another CBA by then but this sets the table and the table is infinite! Randballs Stu… your next article starts here!

Carlos Correa Can Make Up the Difference for the Twins
TNtwins85 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I understand yet according to your gut analysis he’s not a good player at all. He’s had constant injury issues and he’s only going to get worse. That’s just simply not true. Maybe to a degree but yet he’s still 29. He’s played in 80% of the season in 5 of his 9 seasons and 67% of the season in 7 of his 9 seasons. He’s only had 2 seasons of less than 3.1 WAR. His career average is 4.5 WAR. He plays solid defense and is a leader in the locker room. This guy is not Buxton. And he’s not going to be a 1.4 WAR or less player the rest of his career. That price is what you pay for this type of player. Did he have a terrible year last year? Yes. Agreed. You’re looking as if the glass is empty and I’m simply looking at it as if it’s half full. -
Jorge Polanco Drawing Increased Trade Interest
TNtwins85 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Exactly. The metrics are off as far as what we can read. As far as just player value it seems to be close. But with news that comes in about teams and player wants it doesn’t take into account for instance how Seattle wants a more “contact oriented” player. Or that Tampa wants a close to ready player in a package. You could put a package together headlined by Brooks Lee and 4-5 young prospects that nets you George Kirby. Yet Seattle wouldn’t do that with a cost controlled young starter. Or certain teams payroll situations. It’s a good reference but doesn’t account for a lot of other intricacies of a trade. -

Couldn’t have said it better myself. It just makes too much sense from a logic and payroll standpoint. -
Jorge Polanco Drawing Increased Trade Interest
TNtwins85 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I agree. If he could be trusted to be in the lineup for 130 games a year then it’s a different story. With his salary, knees and ankles I just don’t see how the twins can keep him when they are looking to shed payroll and still get a SP. -
Carlos Correa Can Make Up the Difference for the Twins
TNtwins85 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You expect him to post 1.4 WAR or less the rest of his career? I’ll bet the billion dollars I don’t have on the over on that. Unless he’s a total dud and has to retire early because of a career ending injury there’s almost no chance of that. He’s still only 29. -
He’ll maybe come close to those innings once I predict. I’d bet money on the under 3 of 3 seasons on this one. It was a win win for the twins and gray.

Very true. I believe he has a 40 day window or something around those lines.

Jorge Polanco: First Baseman?
TNtwins85 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No….No….and Nooo. Polanco is a 2B and a 2B only at this point. He’s above avg at the position. Carries $10M. And there’s plenty of position depth in MN and coming up. He’s either your starting 2B or your trade bait. I’m all for positional flexibility but 2B is where you flex that ability. Not at 1B with a guy who’s never played there and doesn’t seem to fit there. -
Five Trades to Add a Starting Center Fielder
TNtwins85 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I only see moniak and Carlson as worthy here. Carlson scares me in a twins hitting system though. The home runs are great but the free swinging killed soooooo many innings this last season. I’ll take my chances on a high OBP in Martin than trading and trying to fit any of these guys into a CF mix. I even like Kiersey more than any of these guys really.- 21 replies

Matching Up With The Mariners
TNtwins85 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Now that they traded their high K high HR expensive 3B indeed it opens up a trade of Polo and Lee. Matches up with their eye on a higher contact hitter. Adds a little more value adding Lee allowing an easier road to acquire Gilbert. If they think Lee is ready to contribute opening day this trade is now almost perfect! -
Very true. Although we know they don’t need a second basemen. What could we trade? What do we get back? Cabrera? Meyer?

I agree with you. He’s the epitome of a boom or bust prospect. We differ as I’d rather trade him now for something than cut him in a couple years after watching him taking up a spot in Minnesota and struggling to make contact. He adds the topping on the Polanco cake for Bryce Miller. I’m still a fan of Prelander Berroa and Hancock for Polanco straight up as well.

The pirates have plenty of position players and need pitching. Unless you give them a haul of close to ready prospects I don’t see it. No on Glasnow. If you’re going after Glasnow you are better off going for Burnes. Milwaukee and Tampa are gonna want prospects. We want to get rid of expensive players to add more money to the pot for CF and a 1B platoon. Seattle is who we match up with best. Unless we want burnes for a year and we have to do this again next year.

Matching Up With The Mariners
TNtwins85 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It’s all fine and good to include Lee. I’m all for trading prospects for established players. Especially when you have an over abundance of a certain position. The problem is is Seattle is in win now mode. They want established veterans. Not prospects. Especially when they haven’t even debuted yet. Polanco/Kepler Emmanuel Rodriguez and Larnach are gonna be your guys to get a deal done for Gilbert. Hold onto Lee. Seattle isn’t in need of him. -
I love the Hancock, Berroa , and Locklear trade. It shows a slight overpay. If we took Thielbar out and threw in Balazovic or someone of that caliber does it get done? I just love the idea of 2 young very projectable pitchers that have good stuff. Sheds 10M to get a platoon with Kiriloff and a CFer.

Well, this is quite disappointing to say the least. Just after I read that the braves are increasing payroll. Once again this fan base will be hamstrung by a family that obviously values profits as opposed to loyalty of a fan base. When they should be pushing another $20M out ownership has instead decided to take $20M off the table. All while A.) they knew this was coming. This didn’t just pop up out of nowhere. Cable has been in decline for years. B.) they did nothing to avoid it and failed miserably to get out in front of it. So the question is one of 2 things. Either the people running this organization are completely inept and it’s by pure chance that the billionaire Pohlads have turned the twins into a billion dollar franchise or this was simply always going to happen and just like every other major corporation in this country they’re completely content pulling the wool over fans, customers and consumers eyes. And just like always we’ll complain about it for awhile but once the season starts we’ll all watch, listen and attend games. Buy merchandise. And say, “well shucks! Maybe next year.” All as the Pohlads turn another profit. Count the money and wait for us all to just do it again.

If they can’t find a worthy pitcher/trading partner I believe the twins will be shopping 3rd tier FA SP’s at the end of free agency. I’d love to be surprised. I would. I just feel this trade solves so many issues. The only down side is losing the longest tenured twin. Who has struggled to stay healthy the last couple seasons. E-Rod doesn’t headline this trade. He’s simply a lottery pick. Polo and Farmer provide the infield depth I believe Seattle wants. Willing to trade those 2 to A. Get a top tier pitcher and B. Free up some money to get another hitter.
-
Polanco, E-Rod, Kyle farmer for Logan Gilbert. Gilbert seems like he’s solid. The twins can maybe help his stuff play up. Controlled for a few more years. Seems like a twins fit. I’m not big on E-Rod. He should be dominating and he’s not. He’s got all the tools but he just seems like a bust to me. Moving Polanco and farmer clears up like 16M in payroll. Allows them to go out and get a big bat in FA which they need. The lack of another star hitter was brutal this year. Let’s be honest, we don’t want the twins going after big money pitchers. We may like it but the twins don’t seem to want to go all out and the pitchers don’t seem to want to come here. I like Polo but he’s dispensable at this moment and Seattle needs a 2B. I think it’s a win win for both teams.

The Latest On Boston's Pursuit of Thad Levine
TNtwins85 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hope Levine gets his chance at the top. Seems like an upstanding guy who has been second in command for awhile. Unless he wants to see this to the end. The team is at a turning point at this stage to take that next step to WS contender. Do you finish what you started or do you take a maybe once in a lifetime opportunity?
