  2. He’s naturally fitting in at low A. That’s probably where he fits best but gotta start an 18yo in the FCL. He’ll probably hit a couple snags next year playing between Ft.Myers and Cedar Rapids when the leagues figure out his weaknesses. How he handles that determines if he’s in Target field as a 21 yo. Very impressive first couple months though!
  3. The reports from Gleeman yesterday were that Varland is being ramped down. His stuff in turn played up quite a bit. He threw 50 some pitches and was sitting in the high 90’s with a couple of 100’s in there. Probably gonna be a 4th or 5th option out of the bullpen down the stretch. Now that is exciting!
  4. Regardless of his age the whole point is to A.) lock him up and maybe buy a year or two of FA. B.) The number you’re paying him is known allowing you to plan a few years in advance and work your roster accordingly. It actually works out better that he’s older as you don’t need to commit to 9, 10 years. A simple 6 or 7 year contract gets you to his 30’s. Within that you need to start thinking who’s gonna take this team in the next 5-10 years. Lewis is a prime pick and depending on the next couple years he might be a guy you want here for the next 10-15 years. The attitude and pedigree in Lewis makes a difference for sure. “Ice veins Lewis!”
  5. Exactly! If you sign him to 15M a year for the next 6 years now you know what he’s making for the next 6 years. If he has a couple huge seasons all of a sudden his arbitration number jumps into the high teens or twenties. If he’s just solid maybe he only gets to 16M his last year. All that said locking him up pre determines the number.
  6. Really??? There’s never been a player that surprises people for better or worse and a FO is supposed to be able to know that? In baseball we’re talking here. That’s a pretty wild statement.
  7. True. I get your point but in the same sense the contract not only locks your player in for a given number of years but also presents his value for those same years as well. That knowledge allows you to know that even if Lewis plays out of his mind next year and wins MVP we still know what he’s gonna be making the next X number of years. It provides you 2 benefits.
  8. But this was already looking to be a problem even when they signed Correa. So are you saying that the twins ownership and front office is so inept that even they never seen the ballys situation coming and decided to sign a player to a $200M contract even though it may jeopardize the business as a whole?
  9. Yeah, he’s been dealing with plantar fasciitis that’s flared up throughout the season. The guy still goes out there everyday though. Plays solid defense and performs better than a lot of guys to this point. Who would you rather have had instead of him?
  10. I totally get what you’re saying. One of the reasons the braves are a juggernaut this year and years to come. It really eliminates just having to overload for a 2-3 year window. Allows you to trade for and sign guys like Matt Olson. A.) you have the prospects to do so since you’re not relying on them to take over a spot anytime soon. B.) the money you’ve saved on your long term signees allows you to sign your trade to a deal. Might fall on deaf ears around here though based on the terrible deals the twins have done. They did it with Polanco and Kepler though.
  11. Also to add to this is the eye test and numbers aside. How many times has Wallner come into a big spot and battled with the pitcher to get a base hit? Or battled after a few strikeouts to hit that HR the other night. The ability to just make contact in a key spot. Now look at Gallo who is basically guaranteed to watch or swing at 3 straight pitches in general. Strikeout in key spots. Strikeouts to start the inning only to homer once a week. The ability to just move a runner along when you need a run counts for something as well.
  12. I’m surprised to this point that Funderburk hasn’t been called up yet. Especially while Cole sands sits in the bullpen day in day out. Would be nice to see what we’ve got there and whether he’s a playoff piece or someone more for next years bullpen. I’m guessing they didn’t expect Moran to fall so hard on his face. Anyways, hopefully we can get a look at him in the bigs!
  13. Agreed this rotation is legit. The young guys are hitting well. If you can have Correa be the postseason Correa. If Buxton can deliver a few doubles and a HR or two in a 3 game and 5 game series this team is one to look out for. They’ve failed pretty decent against the teams they’ll be facing in the playoffs. The bullpen though. If you can put Ryan or Maeda in the pen and maybe bring up Varland to let his stuff play up then dang! I’m not sure if this plays out much better. They’re still the twins and we’re not gonna trust it until they’re popping champagne for a division title put if they can have some time to set themselves up the record goes to 0-0 in the playoffs and whatever you did in the season will be overshadowed by what you do in the postseason for sure.
  14. If you sign a 29 year old Ohtani to a 500M+ contract it won’t take long before you turn into the Angels. We made our big splash( Buxton, Correa). Our young Hitters are coming through that we’ve been waiting for(Wallner, Julien, Lewis, Kiriloff). We have a solid pitching staff for a couple years in the stable( López, Ober, Ryan, Varland). A couple studs down on the farm( Lee, Jenkins). Now we just need to make moves around the edges to supplant guys until a prospect comes up. The plan came to fruition. It only took 12 years but it’s here. Save money to sign your in house pre-arb guys to extensions. Sign a guy when there’s a hole. Ride this train for awhile. It’s here. Don’t blow it up with one guy now.
  15. I think it’s a combination of all the things. This guy has pitched a lot in high leverage situations on. He’s literally been the only guy to turn to when SHTF. Scouting is up on him. He’s gonna blow through his IP from last year. It’s his 2nd year even in this role in the show. His stuff isn’t as sharpe. Almost everything is going against him and he’s still super dominant compared to almost anyone else. It is what it is. If the twins do their job and take games they should take he’ll have the rest to be ready to go once the calendar hits october. I think we’re just used to how dominant he was last year and everyone has now adjusted. Remember, MLB players can hit 103. He still has to be a pitcher out there.
  16. Agreed! I fear that the extra 2 roster spots in September will keep him around the rest of the season. I just hope it’s on the bench 9 out of every 10 games and the occasional defensive replacement or pinch hit. Would love to see Funderbirk and Martin but it probably won’t be.
  17. No disagreement. He seems good to go at this moment though. I think he’s about to go on another tear!
  18. He’s started to clobber the ball again the last few games after a short lull the last week or so.
  19. My only 2 questions to all this is (A). Has Wallner had any work at 1B? He seems to check all the boxes for a first baseman. Big, athletic, smart and willing to learn. This one puzzles me more than Julien to 1B. (B). Has Lee had any work in the OF? This puzzles me as well as we have the IF covered unless Lee is the next coming of Scott Rolen, Ozzie Smith or Roberto Alomar. I think he would make a Nice LFer and then find him a permanent spot in 2025. I don’t think he’s coming up this year at all but I’m interested what happens this offseason.
  20. I was joking. If he makes it good for him but if he’s not the next coming of Pablo then Dobnak in the rotation means the entire rotation got injured. He’s gotta be like what the 10th best option? Not joking there. There’s so many other guys to log innings before Randy Dobnak.
  21. Lopez Ryan Ober Maeda- 2 year deal Paddack Varland, SWR, Raya, Festa depth in AAA Mahle if you can get him on a good 1 year deal. Gray gets a QO. He rejects it for the big contract. That’s perfectly fine.
  22. Is Dobnak still in Baseball? Or is he coaching little league and Uber driving again?
  23. Nobody thinks there’s a savior in St. Paul. Lewis is the closest to that and he’s rehabbing. I think what everyone is saying here is that had the Twins just let him be what he is he’s probably our starting CF right now. MAT wouldn’t have been signed and we’d be realizing that this guy and Julien at the top of our lineup create a lot of opportunities to score runs! He’s not gonna hit 20 bombs but he’s not gonna kill innings and he’s gonna be on base. ALOT! Probably not a superstar but a very solid RH bat. Which is what we should’ve got at the deadline. He’s not as good of a hitter as Arraez but he walks more and plays better D. I don’t remember anyone clamoring for Arraez either back in the day. Why? Cause he wasn’t seen as a superstar with elite power. He’s now the best hitter in the game. Just saying. Good players can come out of nowhere when they bring certain elite skill sets not centered on flashy stats.
  24. There’s a reason he was a stud at vandy. There’s a reason he was looked at as a 1-1 pick in the draft. There’s a reason Toronto started him at AA right away. There’s a reason the Twins wanted him in that trade. The Twins screwed around with him trying to get more power out of him and playing him at SS. As a result there’s a reason why he struggled for the last 2 years. I think he dropped in the draft because of his power profile as well as not having the ability to play SS. I don’t believe the Toronto scouting staff is inept. They started him in AA for a reason. They identified right away what he was and what he wasn’t. The Twins then got him hoping he was more than he was. If you look at his minor league stats he’s the perfect guy to plug into this offense. .256/.388/.350/.738. BB/K at 129/159. And those are his numbers trying to hit for power for who knows how long. Even if you drop those numbers a bit with a big league transition he’s still better than 1/2 of this team.
  25. I think our infatuation with power and whether a guy can play SS should be over. This team by this time next year will probably have 4 SS capable people who are better than Martin. He’s not playing SS. So that’s irrelevant. He’s not playing 2B as that position is even more blocked. If he starts he’s gonna play CF or LF. He’s not gonna hit for power and that’s ok cause he’s gonna walk about as much as he strikes out. I see a guy who’s gonna hit .250 and get on base at a .330-350 clip and play solid defense in the OF. He’ll be good on the bases and be a gamer. He’ll make contact with a guy on 2nd or 3rd to move the runner along instead of trying to hit a 5 run homer. I think he’s the exact player we need after this season where everyone fails to put the ball in play. I’m so over the power aspect of prospects and power approach we have. I’m fine to go back to the 00’s twins hitting approach instead of everyone trying to hit dingers every AB.
