  1. What are turkeys thankful for at Thanksgiving? Vegetarians. You can use that joke as you see fit.
  2. I will be at game three. I am able to do so because I am one of the woebegone few that have had season tickets since they opened the joint. My family has had several interventions with me on this issue. But sometimes you just can't help these people.
  3. Wallner and Kirilloff seemed to think they were facing Verlander's overwhelming HOF credentials and not the 2023 version of him, which is still good but no longer terrifying. But isn't it great to care about playoff baseball again and know that win or lose, that we deserve to be there? Even compared to the Bomba squad (a one-trick pony fed by the woeful AL Central), this feels different. Enjoy it all!
  4. Carlos is an amazing defensive shortstop. I think Kyle Farmer is a perfectly competent major leaguer. But if he was at short and Jake Cave was in center field this year, we would just all be left complaining about the Vikings right now. Carlos is very gutty too. You have to admire in every respect how he has comported himself through injury and his free agency journey.
  5. As far as we fans know, it is difficult to understand the context under which Rocco manages. How much is dictated from the FO? Let's face it. We don't know. I love Paul Molitor. Amongst other things, I would give a month's pay for him to replace Gladden on the radio. But he is a cautionary tale of ignoring the bosses. These two games were managed perfectly. Let's just enjoy it.
  6. I just had a friend visit from Bend, Oregon and he brought some chocolate-covered hazelnuts from your state as a present. I am reluctant to say that things are the best but those bad boys are like Johan Santana 2004-2006 good.
  7. Thanks Melissa! I enjoy your stories. They are always bright and optimistic.
  8. I was around for the 1987 and 1991 World Series. I was with my then 5 year son and caught a foul ball in game 2 of 1991. Kevin Tapani was pitching. In the spring of 1992, I was driving to the hockey rink in Eden Prairie and who is standing out in front of his house ? Kevin Tapani. I hustled to the house and got the ball. I went back and Kevin is still there, doing some yard work. I got out of the car, told him the story and politely asked him to sign the ball, which he did. He was so nice about it that it was like I was doing him a favor. It was a different time then, I guess. Different pay for sure. Different sense of pretentiousness perhaps. Ps. We still proudly have the ball.
  9. Castro is a marvelous signing and his enthusiasm is contagious and refreshing. But like most things, the "Dazzle Man" is flatly wrong. Gray and Lopez are clearly the MVPs. The statistics on that are conclusive. The only thing I will ever agree with Gladden on is his resignation letter. He is absolutely the worst MLB broadcaster to have a microphone. Having Molly on the call for a bit this summer was like finding a 7-11 in the middle of a desert.
  10. With all respect, the only consideration is whether Jorge is worth $9.5 million next year. (The option less the buy-out.) Without a doubt, the answer is yes. This can viewed independently of whoever else is on the roster. Polanco or the others can be dealt. If nothing else, Jorge can be traded at no expense for prospects. I know we don't like those. :) I would ask Julien to do nothing over the winter but take grounders and see what you have in the spring. Maybe Lee will step into the job. But I certainly would have Polanco in my back pocket regardless.
  11. That was a truly gritty performance and an inspiring win by the local nine. But Rocco, good golly. His use of the pen was inexplicable. He managed it like game 7 of the World Series, burning every arm despite the grace of easy innings. His removal of Julien for Gallo as a pinch runner in the eighth in a one run game is maddening. Gallo is not a gifted base runner at this point in his career. The defensive improvement is marginal if it exists at all as it forces Barrels to play second base. Of course, that spot came back up to bat and Joey (naturally) whiffs. Additionally, Rocco feels the need to torch his challenge defending Gallo even though he was very clearly out in a clumsy steal attempt . The replay was explicit. Not to get into the math weeds too much but you don't sell expiring options with some remaining life for nothing. I am generally pretty neutral when it comes to Rocco but last night was a Masterclass in things not to do. Rocco's fascination with Gallo is a complete headscratcher to me. Last night, it nearly cost them the game.
  12. I am not a Rocco hater nor apologist but records in the AL Central need to come with an asterisk, a caveat and maybe even a legal disclaimer. Rocco has hugely benefitted over his managerial career from a historically bad division.
  13. She was great. She is very talented and seemed legitimately earnest which is always an endearing quality. There is nothing worse in a performance than a singer who leaves the impression that they are grinding out their tunes, collecting a check and getting off the stage as soon as possible. Or as I like to call it, the "Van Morrison experience". I wish she had had a bigger audience. She deserved it. Note to the Twins: I stayed in the stands for specific reasons and the acoustics there were pretty tortured. The club sometimes baffles me in their seeming indifference to fans, but these concerts are a really nice addition to the Target experience.
  14. I'm not sure what is worse in this post? The sentiment and the spelling and grammar are all fighting for the distinction. Joe was a great player. Joe is a great guy. He should be celebrated. Period.
  15. The telling thing is that they did NOTHING. This team did not warrant major commitment. My philosophy was: buy them a coffee, not a ring. That sort of thing. Trading Maeda and calling up Keuchel seemed an easy way to improve for instance. No prospects gone. No real risk there. But they did nothing. This is not a team that needs nothing. You don't need several multi-million dollar FO executives to do nothing. So what I would guess this is telling us is that Falvey has been told his services are no longer needed after this year. Please don't disturb the toys for the next kids. I don't how else you could interpret it.
  16. With this roster, the best three trades the Twins could make today would be: -- Dan Gladden for anyone. The Twins "Hall of Famer" with the same lifetime WAR as Nick Punto gets stranger and more pedantic every day; -- $14 beers for $8 beers; -- Joey Gallo for not Joey Gallo As I said yesterday, this team has neither the trade capital nor the merit to make significant changes.
  17. The team is hamstrung by two things. The FO's disastrous tradeline decisions in 2022 which left the prospect cupboard bare and the fact that the team just isn't that good. They don't have the capital to do mega trades if they wanted to and the team is not viable enough to warrant it if they did. I would trade Maeda for a LH reliever and/or a RH bat and a prospect or two. You can then call up Keuchel. I think the impact to the starting rotation is marginal and you improve the team next year and beyond. I would also DFA Gallo. His ongoing presence can only be attributed to the FO's ego. It's a headscratcher. I don't think the team can or should do much more.
  18. What should happen when Polanco returns? Buck should be placed on the Il and Julien should be (more or less) your everyday DH. Kepler should be traded for a (likely a middling) middle reliever. Wallner should get his shot. What will happen? Wallner will be sent down.
  19. Regardless of your playoff circumstances, all players should be trade candidates always. If you can get the right price, no one should be sacred. Loyalty by players or teams is gone, if it ever existed at all. That sounds Machiavellian, but that should be the mindset. But when star players are traded that value proposition is seldom realized by the selling team. That's when fans get really mad. So what does that mean with Gray? I have no idea. What is being offered for him? Ps. With two extra rounds of playoffs, the 1987 comparison should perhaps be reconsidered.
  20. The team seems in disarray the past few weeks. Rocco is unhappy with the players. Rocco is unhappy with the FO. The Pohlads are getting itchy (per Souhan) and maybe the skipper knows that he may be the fall guy. That will make you cranky. With the way the races are presently, there will be far more buyers than sellers at the end of the month . I think Falvey is hoping for a streak (either winning or losing) to tell him what to do into the trading deadline. Being a very shaky .500 is the worst place to be. If the team's fortunes turn south than Gray will be shopped and Keuchel represents a warm body to finish the season. I appreciate your writing Nick but this team has much bigger issues than saving a few innings of starting pitching. I hope the team will be bold out of the break. DFA Kepler and Gallo. Bring up Wallner. Play Kirilloff more. Shake the tree. This team is the beneficiary of two things: amazing SP and the Kansas City Royals. Without those gifts, this is one big stinky pile of poo; smelling of bad hitting, defense and base running That mix gets crucified (if you make it) in the playoffs.
  21. Not trading Kepler for that Starbucks coupon was their worst (non) trade. The Arraez trade over time will be fine. I love Louie but he is a singles hitting DH with bad legs. That ages like three day old fish. The Mahle trade is a Hall of Fame stinker. Falvey is just fortunate that it happened in the same year as the Gobert swap.
  22. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our own issues that we don't take time to observe things around us. I am certainly guilty of this. But if you look around baseball there are very few great teams. I will admit I stand in awe a bit of Atlanta and Tampa. I want to tap Tampa's front office every time I shop on-line. I will get everything I want for 30% of the price. The Twins are a flawed team. We all know the issues (too many Ks, a bullpen only a mother could love, the FO's Kepler obsession) but so is virtually every other team. Why can't we win the woebegone Central? Why can't we make noise in the playoffs? With so many imperfect teams, isn't this the year to push chips on to the table? Small changes can make a big impact this year! That isn't often the case. Be heartened! Let's go.
  23. We are now in the 8th year of the Falvey regime. I think the FO must be judged as average at best. For years, our fans have found solace in the "small market" argument. Folks, Tampa and Cleveland and Baltimore have blown that excuse to smithereens. It's intellectual road kill. We have not one playoff game under their watch. If someone wants to argue that "average" is too generous, I will listen. One of my biggest concerns about the FO is their inability to own up to bad contracts and simply move on. Wait! They did it with Donaldson. Not really. They didn't have to eat any money. How can you explain the retention of Kepler and Gallo and Pagan? What's the commonality? Big (by MN standards anyway) money. Should Gallo and Kepler be dispatched in favor of Larnach and Wallner. Of course. What ever you think of Gallo and Kepler they are not the future. Are Larnach and Wallner? It is unclear. They have not been given consistent enough playing time to decide that. But they could be and they are certainly no worse than the incumbents as we collectively find out. There is an old adage in investing; sometimes taking small losses are your best trades. They mitigate worse outcomes. I don't think anyone has ever told our FO that saying.
  24. The only way Buxton is tradable for literally anything ( a middling A prospect, a GroupOn coupon) is for the Twins to eat $95 million of his contract. The only reason the Twins continue to torture us with Kepler if because of the $4 million due him. If Buxton is too unhealthy to play any center then he should be put on the IL and the Twins should rotate through the DH spot with Wallner, Larnach, etc. Kepler needs to be released. The bullpen desperately needs help. The season can be salvaged if the FO has the will. There is not one shred of evidence that they do.
