    This probably deserves to be said.....if the Twins were in the NL they'd be in 8th place in the WC and tied with the Nationals. The Nationals. Clear sellers. We've got a buffet full of the world's worst foods and we're pretending the lutefisk is tasty because it isn't stinky tofu. It's still lutefisk. It's still not good. Tom Pohlad is going to "try hard" his way into another dumb decision if he listens to the advice in this post.

    It might be. If we were seriously looking at "contending" that would be the real conversation to have. All I hear is half measures about some rental guy to pitch the 7th with his middling ERA.

    I think we probably end up starting him in LF in the future and that's really the only spot he should be in. He seems to have good range out there and that fits well with other players we've parked in that spot with similar rangy attributes. If it doesn't work in LF, I don't see it working anywhere. You also can't have him in LF with a limited power profile and similar power deficits at 3B, 1B, RF, etc. and hope to field a lineup that can contend.

    To the larger point....."in playoff contention" is such a load-bearing phrase in this conversation. The diluted playoff field has simply created this misnomer in the name of exciting more fanbases. (It's also, IMO, largely hurt the trade deadline as an exciting concept in MLB) We're not contenders. We've scrapped and clawed and punched above our weight class....but contenders we are not. Investing assets in short term rentals chasing that phantom hurts our actual future. We have something brewing with the young players on the cusp in this organization and the path to truly turning the corner and putting butts back in the seats is true contention. Not "we're one game under .500 but look at the wild card standings!" self delusion. Selling at the deadline is not going to hurt fan morale anymore than the level it is currently at. "Right sizing" did the heavy lifting there. Losing Trevor Larnach isn't going to make Steve from Shakopee burn his jersey in effigy. The only real question for me - sell on Bell, Larnach, Jeffers for sure. This should be a no brainer - is Ryan. I don't have the necessary info to know what to do on Ryan. He should be shopped....but traded? Well that depends on return. It also depends on the message he's given the FO on his willingness to sign an extension. If he's hell bent on FA and the team knows it...then he is also a no brainer to sell. Fans will come back for a winner. We quite literally do not have a "winner" right now. Selling is the best path no matter how much we'd like to pretend it isn't when we look at the WC standings.

    We may have lost the plot on the value of Josh Bell or Trevor Larnach if we're seriously suggesting moving Luke Keaschall to a weak-side platoon in order to accommodate them on the roster.

    We'll regret anything other than 1. Unless there is some real chance to sign him to an extension behind the scenes none of us are privvy to.

    The 2023 Vikings were a 7-10 football team that missed the playoffs. At the time of the NFL trade deadline they were 4-4 and on a three game winning streak. They also lost Kirk Cousins for the season the Sunday before the deadline. The Vikings were a game out of a playoff spot trailing the 5-3 Seahawks. What did that Vikings team do? Traded Ezra Cleveland for a 6th and added Josh Dobbs. They chose not to deal Danielle Hunter, Jordan Hicks, DJ Wonnom, KJ Osborn. After an offseason where they also refused to deal Cousins. This is the Twins now. A middling team who is pretending they have a chance while assets wither on the vine that could be used to help the future. Josh Bell will contribute ZERO next year and is actively blocking the developmental process of guys like Roden. Jeffers isn't coming back. Larnach isn't a long-term guy. Get value for these dudes and build around that spicy rotation we're building next year.

    Maybe, perhaps it was a coaching issue more than anything. I think KAT wanted to win in Minnesota and would've done anything they asked of him. The guy bodied Jokic on that playoff run, he jsut no-showed the Dallas series. But players have a maturation process in the playoffs and we never let him have his. I never saw his trade as a "Steal". I had Julius Randle red flags from day one, but it turned out even worse than I could have imagined. I at least thought we'd flip him later for something of value.

    God I hate that the AL is so aggressively sub-mediocre. This feels like the year the Vikings chose not to deal Danielle Hunter while playing some astronaut at QB.

    A look at the column for height and weight makes me wonder if the Vikings offensive line coaches are secretly collaborating.

    I'm sure they'll start with him at catcher, but honestly....I hate that we wait so long to start getting players comfortable where they are mostly likely to play. I hope, sooner rather than later, he's working in RF and 1B.

    Bold take to "buy" from three teams that are much more likely to be "buyers" than we are.

    I think you could get by with both of them in the starting lineup if you were getting higher-than-normal production from other spots in the lineup but that isn't the case for the Twins other than CF. Those corner spots would both have sub-par offensive players and I just don't think you can build a viable contender with that being the case.

    It really, really sucks that this team that hasn't been .500 since there was snow on the ground is convincing people that they're a "buyer". I get the sentiment, I really do, but just because you're getting a D and everyone else is getting an F doesn't make you college material. The classroom next door has actual A students.

    It's a smart baseball trade to turn a reliever into a controlled starter every single time you can.

    The Twins are in a crappy spot. They burned their own fanbase with the fakeout on selling the team and slashing payroll after a fun postseason. They aren't winning fans back easily and the only path, IMO, is sustained winning. Joe Ryan, hypothetically, could be a great means to that end....but all reporting we have is that he hasn't been interested in an extension. Which sure feels like he's counting the days to hit the open market. Good for him, have loved watching him pitch, hope he gets a bag of cash. But the Twins can't let him walk for nothing. Too many other failures, coupled with MLB's economics, make it nothing short of malfeasance to watch that happen. Now...the Brewers haven't come away well in most of these trades. It doesn't look great. Several deals of the last five years (Snell, Glasnow, Burnes, Peralta, etc) don't look great for the trading team. That stinks, but what other path is there but the wisest one? Some comp pick for Ryan won't help Walter Jenkins. And maybe trading Ryan won't either, but I know which one has a better chance to.

    Man, this thread just goes to show that for some people their very idea of "baseball" includes "not fun". Can't overdue this idea but as someone who tunes in very infrequenty to Twins broadcasts, this was "must watch" for me. I enjoy fun with my baseball.

    If the rest of the AL wasn't so terrible there really wouldn't be much question. I appreciate the way the team is playing, but I also don't see a contender.

    I think you and @nicksaviking are both making great arguments but fellas..... We all know they'll do neither of your well-reasoned positions and instead you're going to be watching Cedric Mullins and Mitch Garver occupy roster spots. Be at peace, it is foretold.

    I love the idea but where exactly are we playing him? Fedko may or may not have been superglued to the bench somewhere and we forgot him on the road trip. This team needs to dump Larnach or Bell at the deadline or Roden is going to hit twice a week and not be able to get enough consistency for it to matter.
