  1. I agree baseball has a problem with that, I just prefer a different solution to it personally.
  2. Given the attendance numbers his sample size to irritate is at least pretty damn low!
  3. I personally hate that. I think it has really hurt the trade deadline and diluted the playoff field. In sports where there are less random outcomes that is a defensible position, but to me baseball and hockey (in particular) need to have a much smaller playoff field. I'd want to encourage competitive behavior in other ways.
  4. I can't seem to find a recap of that offer, what did they propose?
  5. We've had some really memorable Game 163s and I do think a playoff race can provide a spark....but context matters. We knew those Twins teams as consistent contenders. They had an established past and promising future with that core to resonate emotionally. I can't imagine anyone would argue the 2026 team falls in that category.
  6. That would be fine, the problem is the cost of quality relief pitching is highest right now. How much are you willing to pay for a reliever?
  7. I think this is a well thought-out article, so I appreciate that. I don't love the cost on that Griffin rental. Or to get a mid-700s OPS guy in Walker. If that's the buy cost then I'm even more entrenched on not doing it.
  8. I am not in the camp that believes an 83-85 win, squeak into the playoffs in a bad division, type of run makes any meaningful distinction with the fanbase. The swings and momentum are going to need to be far more significant for that to happen. I don't see this team as the one to generate that momentum. 30% odds really shouldn't be enough to make poor asset management choices. I don't know what the Twins might be able to acquire for Bell, Jeffers, etc. but I'm more than willing to explore it with those odds.
  9. Two things: Bringing up '87 (even with acknowledgements) is not helpful IMO. It's a whole new playoff world now for those comps to have merit. Baseball is a game with many random outcomes in small samples leading to a playoff setup with more rounds only compounding that nature. To your point here: That's reasonable, but that path also includes knowingly bypassing the chance to add assets for players that are highly unlikely to be retained. The balancing act comes down to choosing what you place more value in for lost opportunity. I don't view low odds to survive multiple rounds worth that trade off for a team that can't muster a .500 record or even have a positive run differential.
  10. Part of the arguments people make for "go for it" sure do seem predicated on havign Joe Ryan as an ace. Hopefully he turns it around but this is a fairly robust sample size at this point:
  11. I can understand that goal....I'd probably crack a joke about our playoff misery if I was keeping that theme going but neither of us needs that PTSD.....I just don't see it with this crew. Trading low level prospects isn't the part that bothers me about buying either, it's missing out on assets for players I don't see sticking around that bugs me. I think there is hope on the horizon, I'd rather have all the added talent to that group that I can get.
  12. No offense @Vanimal46 but I googled that because I thought you were wrong. He seems like he's been around for 20 years.
  13. How the eff is he only 30?
  14. Hard pass. We should be dealing Jeffers....but not for this guy.
  15. My jokes about wishing for a losing streak and being forsaken are tongue in cheek. My analogy absolutely fits - you're taking big risks with a false sense of security premised on a refusal to look at your "success" or "opportunity" with context. I didn't mean to imply you personally were a weakness. The "you" in that case was the Twins. The Twins are part of the "weakness" of the AL. They suck just as much as the rest. Being slightly less weak than the rest of the weaklings IS the context you should be considering. Slightly less weak isn't the same as strong. One of my biggest issues is people keep saying "The AL is weak, let's pounce". Yeah....it is weak. We're part of that problem! We're not good. I get investing in a "good" team. We're not good!!!
  16. The only guy I'd consider is Neto given his quality defense and team control. From what I can see there doesn't appear to be much available that also comes with several years of control.
  17. I'm more concerned that "buying" breaks up the core than I am about "selling" doing that part.
  18. I'm being tongue-in-cheek in this thread, but we really have to be careful comparing the playoffs from 1987 to now. The gauntlet is not anywhere close to the same thing. We all want a winner, but we also want the team to make wise decisions. Let's say you're some kid playing for Nicollet. You DOMINATE the football field. You're so confident you have a chance at the NFL you take "an opportunity" to put yourself in debt to buy a brand new car. Dumping assets in it because you feel so good and want so badly to be an NFL player. What you have refused to look at is the quality of your competition and the way it is lulling you into a false sense of security. That shiny new car feels good now...but the bill will come due. A wise person should ask if the path to the reward is really paved the way you believe before taking such a risk. It's been called a "trap" in this thread. That's the right word. Especially since you are part of that weakness.
  19. They have forsaken me. I beseech ye gods....6 game losing streak!
  20. There has been a lot here, and apologies if I'm repeating something already said, but the author frankly thinks they are smarter than they really are. Part of this article says "enjoy the storylines"....ok, part of the "storyline" of sports ARE the transactions! We tune in for the December GM meetings hoping to hear about an exciting player move. We watch for free agent signings. We tune in for the draft. We hang on the decisions about the 26 man roster. Why would the trade deadline be any different? Why would we suddenly not form opinions about this one part of the "storyline" when the author has endorsed that very notion? I'm not the GM. The manager. The owner. I'm a fan. Transactions and the path they weave for the future of the organization are part of that storyline. The never ending one I enjoy the rest of my life. This entire thesis is hypocritical and short-sighted because it chooses to carve out a part of the storyline that is woven into the fabric of being a sports fan. The embarrassing, condescending retorts afterwards here in the comments only cement that this person thought they were holding a lofty notion when the truth is they never had a coherent notion to start with.
  21. Something > Nothing. I just proved that your contention that only trading all-stars is worth it is false. With several examples. You went with "David Ortiz wasn't even that good". Bold strategy cotton. I'm not sure which argument you're making is more bizarre. Nothing > something or "david ortiz wasn't very good".
