    I lean mostly this way. I think the Bills are just a unit on offense. Tons of weapons, the best offensive player in football, and a head coach who wants to jugular people on offense. I also think the Lions D might just be trash.

    I don't care about trading the players at this point. I care about the lost value of Ryan, Jeffers, and Larnach. It wasn't the cost of buying, it was the opportunity cost of not selling. Hell, Ryan should've moved last year in the big deadline blowout. Lopez should've been gone last winter.

    Joe Ryan does not intend to sign with the Twins. He will not be a "centerpiece" of anything we do past next year. Buxton continues to get older. The direction is to invest in a bright future. Which, in practical terms, means subtracting from the present to amplify those odds and horde as many upside plays as possible to achieve it. Call it what you want - rebuild, retool, whatever. That's the direction. Let's just be clear one more time how royally we effed up this direction at the deadline - we missed out on assets for Ryan and Jeffers (and possibly Larnach and others) in order to pursue a playoff spot. We now sit in the 9th best lottery position, tied with a bunch of teams that will slot somewhere between 5 and 10. So, for perspective, we are much closer to another top 5 pick in the draft than we are the playoffs. Despite stupidly buying at the deadline and losing asset value. We had a direction - add assets. We should've continued that and instead we did the dumbest thing possible. Twins Way.

    Agreed with the logic. In the case of if they deal Lopez and Ryan - which they should - then we have Abel, Zebby, Prielipp, Kremer, Taj, Festa, Rojas. I think I might still bring back Ober in that scenario if no starting pitching comes back via trade, but I wouldn't die on a hill for it at that point.

    I have a hard time dumping Ober when we have so many question marks on the pitching staff. Even with all of his question marks. They need to decide that 2027 is being used to chart the path forward for the team. If they do - and they deal Lopez, Ryan, Larnach, etc. - then I think you bring Ober back just as insurance.

    Mendez or Keaschall or "Player not yet on roster" For all the plodding, slow, large, power-hitter types we drafted over the years we didn't manage a single one we could move to 1B. If I had the power to choose - I make it Keaschall. I give Wallner RF for one last chance at the beginning of next year and I know that some combo of E-rod, Jenkins, and Mendez are in the wings should he falter. At least with Keaschall we know the dude can hit.

    I truly do not understand our aversion to drafting guys with a 5th round pick versus continually spending 5ths to add guys (read: Cam Akers) who are past their prime or on shot knees. I have advocated for Skattebo, Emmet Johnson, Chase Brown, Roschon Johnson (not as proud of that one), Trey Benson (ditto), Braelon Allen, RJ Harvey, DJ Giddens, Jonah Coleman, Nick Singleton, Mike Washington, and Eli Heidenreich. We have none of those guys. We wasted picks those guys could have been had with and now we have DJ freaking Dallas. It's so frustrating. A smart front office should be spending a 4th-7th on a running back at least every other year. Injuries force you to churn through them and the age cliff makes it so you never want to resign them. Instead you have constant surplus value out of picks you routinely get nothing out of.

    I expect to see a whole lot of carries for DeeJay Dallas. Roughly infinity % more than I'd have expected to say 10 days ago.

    I'd really like to see what he could do with a competent defense behind him. I still believe there is a good starter in there.

    It's not about Rocco and Shelton. Or the next guy. The organization needs new leadership. Big league managers are not vital to success. They're not the ones teaching fundamentals in A ball. They aren't the ones teaching base-running in AA. They make a lineup that is pretty much predetermined by organizational standards every day. All Shelton did was spend a month getting lucky that scrubs on his team sequenced their way into runs. This is your "More you know moment": The Twins currently have a worse run differential than the 58 win Angels. This team is lucky to have 70 wins. Lucky.

    Ringing endorsement: I like this new manager mostly because it stopped a bunch of jerks on Twins Daily from obsessively posting about the former manager.

    The sober assessment is about right. As of right now...we don't have difference makers by and large on this team. And many that you might put in that camp are on a severely limited clock for how long they will stay at that level or still be a Twin. Lackey, Jenkins, Culpepper, Lee, Keaschall, E-rod, Mendez, Taj, Houston...this is the core. We just don't know what it is yet. Which is all the more reason we should've been supplementing them with, spitballing here, Tolle and Arias. And other dudes.

    Even full health I don't think we're in all that different a position. What would a healthy Buxton and Ryan have added? A couple of wins? We're about to be 11 games under .500, I think people (not you I know) need to stop pointing at injuries. This was a team that was only "in contention" for these highly dubious reasons: 1) Their offense - lead by such stalwarts as Victor Caratini, Trevor Larnach, Tristan Gray, Ryan Kreidler, and others - hit out of their minds for about a month. They especially hit out of their minds in the most convenient of circumstances - with runners on and in scoring position. They sequenced their way into way more chances than they deserved and then capitalized on them at a ridiculous rate. That wasn't sustainable and, contrary to arguments made by those still living in a fantasy world, was completely predictable. More than once even! 2) The AL was hot garbage. The idea that the rest of the league was going to spend two more months being terrible, when they had likely regression as well (but in a good way!), was also a dubious bet. That has also proven true as several teams have improved their play enough to make the final spot likely to require 83+ wins. To hit 83 wins, at the deadline, would've required the Twins to play significantly better baseball than they played all year AND survive the inevitable swoon of their offensive luck. It was just a really, really obviously bad bet to make. But man, we were fired up about it! These posts.....are......embarrassing.

    I don't think the Twins are so rich in prospects that they should turn down top 50 guys (who are now top 5 guys in Arias) during a retooling of the roster.

    Tolle has exceeded expectations but Arias was a known commodity. And yes, it is difficult to predict future greatness.....all the more reason to have more irons in the fire to develop greatness rather than constantly playing handcuffed because you refuse to make the difficult decisions.

    It has been awhile, but I think our primary mistake has been in coaching. Many teams cultivate great offensive linemen from mid round picks by identifying good schematic fits and coaching them up to use their strengths. The Chiefs, Eagles, Seahawks, Packers, Cowboys, and a few others have mined pro-bowl (or near pro bowl) level contributors out of 3rd/4th/5th round picks. Our similar efforts have resulted in Walter Rouse and similar duds.

    Best case scenario: the CBA doesn't drag on, the FA market is the usual garbage, and several of the big payroll teams come knocking that Joe would like to sign with. Dodgers, Padres, Angels, whomever it is on the West Coast he wants. We've long since lost an elite return for him, but it might be a decent one.

    Yeah, Fries' contract is no bargain. We signed the two best guys we could...one was just old and the other isn't playing well. OL should be something you draft and develop.

    I appreciate the purpose behind the question and I think the Twins should be discussing this behind closed doors both as an organization and in cooperation with Buck. The Twins don't have another good CF option on the roster. If they can change that somehow by going out and finding an option that makes sense for the team and the organization than the conversation changes. Until such time as another option exists....Buxton is the CFer for this team. It's one of the few places they have a legitimately good defender penciled in. Might be worth looking at someone like Victor Scott as a AAA guy to have around so at least you have a legit defensive guy in the fold somewhere. (Work on his hitting obviously)

    I wish we would've had the stomach to finish what we started last year. I'm pretty excited about some of the pieces we have and would feel really, really good about this team becoming a fun, competitive team had we gone through with deals for Ryan, Lopez, Jeffers, Larnach, and others. Hopefully we don't repeat the same mistakes when we turn that page.
