  1. Well written and thought out article. Defense is important and in my opinion, with no stats in front of me to support said opinion, I believe Twins are just an average to below average fielding teams.
  2. This is one of the most puzzling and frustrating Twins team I've seen in many years. Last year's team was rotten all year long. You knew what they were and they played poor baseball. This year's team teased you at times thinking they are good. Then go for long stretches playing awful baseball. As a fan we have no idea where this team is headed or what direction the Fo will take us. Plus we have a manager incapable, and unwilling to make in game changes and adjustments. Let's be honest here. He's got to be amongst the worst "manager" in the game today. Plus we have a FO that spends 35 million on one player but basically nothing to staff a bullpen. Also if the great Buxton is unable to play (again) why not put him on the DL so our beleaguered manager at least has another option on the bench. IMO this team is strangely managed from top to bottom with weird lineups, inflexible managing and a too deep dive into analytics and ignoring common sense.
  3. Glad twins won. Not a great game but ok. Bottom line is Twins lost two out of three to Cleveland at home mostly related to our bullpen. Again the offense was missing. One day they score a ton then the next day they almost get shutout again. If they aren't going to use Duffey and Thornburg even when they are well rested they need to be gone. They are dead weight. Tell Baldelli, then to quit complaining about not having enough bullpen arms if he isn't going to use what is available. It's hard not to be discouraged after losing 2 of 3 to Cleveland. You don't get rewarded for being close. This is MLB. Bottom line your goal is to win. The Twins have a losing record the past month and have not played all that well. And who isn't sick of all the Buxton bs? Yes he was hurt. That's the bs I'm talking about. It's been going on for 7 years. He's injured way too often and not dependable at all. If he's hurt he needs to go on the IL. He is just becoming dead weight when he can't play. Put him on IL and get someone up who can actually help out and thus give our " great" manager another bench option. It's also frustrating to hear Rocco complain about the 13 pitcher limit rule. As I recall it is a major league rule for all teams not just the Twins.
  4. OMG my second posting today. That game has me upset I guess. Yes I would have been one to rip Duffey if he had been in there and given up the lead. My contention is that if you aren't going to use him because you don't trust his abilities, why is he on the team. At that point he is taking up space. That is the issue I have with Duffey. He should be traded or DFA if you cannot trust him enough to use him. I knew the bullpen was being overworked and it's just a matter of time before it caves. It also goes back to the starters inability to pitch longer. My god the season is almost half over. Most of your starting pitchers should be stretched out by now. This should have been foreseen a long time ago by the FO.
  5. Oh please let's get over Buxton. I agree that when he was mashing home runs nothing was mentioned about his knee. Also when he strikes out 3 times in one game and doesn't come close to hitting anything, his knee is hurting. How convenient. Buxton is hurt again. He will continue to get hurt the rest of his career. He's great at times. Sometimes super. But he is basically a well paid part time player that you can't count on day to day.
  6. Not sure how people at least in part, cannot blame Rocco for many miscues. He has been totally out managed by Franconia these last two games. Plus I agree that if you are afraid to use Duffey with a two or three run lead, then why is he even on the roster taking up space? We should not be surprised by Cotton. The Twins have already DFA d him TWICE this year and no other team wanted him. I was dissappointed that Gray couldn't hold on to a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning. He needed to pitch better to get team into the 6 the inning. The comment by Dyoung Park about the home run is absurd. It doesn't matter one but if the exit velocity was 90 or 115. It doesn't matter if it landed in the first row or the third deck. It's still a home run!! But that's right. The twins never hit any "cheap" home runs or bloop singles. Just our opponents. So tired of all the excuses. The fact is evident that this team is just average or below average with a terrible pitching staff. They've been lucky to be in first place as long as they were. The inability of starters to consistently go 6 or 7 innings has worn out a mediocre bullpen. This lands on Baldelli and the FO
  7. Kind of a waste of time article. Those players are obviously their most important players. I don't think an article with newly invented analytics was needed to convince people who the most important players on the team are

    Uggghhhh

Rocco has total inflexibility to his game plan. He is a very poor in game manager. He has cost the team several games already with his goofy lineups, in game strategies ( or lack thereof) and his apparent lack of feel for the game. He usually is out managed by his opposing manager. Twins will not win the central I'm afraid. Nor will they make the playoffs. When all is said and done most of it will fall on Baldelli. Besides if we made the playoffs he would probably have Correa and Buxton sitting because it's their scheduled day off. Remember he recently told a reporter he didn't know how to address the situation when both of them are scheduled off on the same day. Come on. Get real.
  9. I agree. Great rule. Reduce it to 12 would be fine too. It's so amusing and stupifying to me how people say how this hurts the Twins. The rule affects all teams not just the Twins. This new brand of baseball is becoming unwatchable. Pitchers only going 4-5 innings and then thinking they did a great job. Burning up your bullpen every night will leave you out of contention sooner rather than later. Managing games with a computer and spreadsheets instead of common sense and situational managing. Having a manager that is inflexible to the game plan and having no in game adjustments to speak of even as the game gets away. It's time to reboot either the computer or the manager or both.
  10. Not surprised the twins list. Pagan is an instant heart attack to watch when he comes in. Twins bullpen is very leaky and fragile. They have given up a league leading 40 homers. Yes 40 home runs this bullpen has given up. Cleveland looks good. They are on a roll. They have swagger. They have a much better manager than twins.
  11. I hate pitch framing. It is a joke. Jeffers great at not moving his glove? Come on watch the game. Making a .175 hitting catcher trying to look good defensively to prove his worth is a joke. He is a below average defensive catcher and a much below average major league hitter. Framing stats is so subjective. How many pitches that could have been strikes were called balls because of poor pitch framing? Catchers that bring in a pitch should send a clear message to umpires that the movement of the glove indicates the catcher figures it is a ball. This the glove movement indicates same. The umpires that fall for this gimmick should be replaced. I've long been against robo umps calling balls and strikes. But seeing the terrible home plate umpiring this year and the cartoonist framing or bringing back pitches has changed my mind. Bring on the robo ump!
  12. Worrying about losing prospects in a possible trade could be part of what holds the franchise back. All the "great" prospects that are mentioned are just that: prospects. Most don't plan out. If you are willing to talk trade with another team to improve your team you have to be prepared to trade prospects for what you want. If not then why bother talking trade at all? Current Twins team has many holes and deficiencies to make playoffs this year IMO
  13. I've been saying for a long time:. The Twins are a mediocre team in a mediocre division. The are way too inconsistent in all phases of the game. If they are lucky enough to win the division there is no way they advance in playoff round. Add into it that we have maybe the worst manager in baseball spells disaster. It appeared they signed Archer to be a starter but they limit his innings to four again. Four inning Archer strikes again.
  14. Just goes to show that the draft is a crapshoot. You never know how the players will perform. You somehow need special scouts to correctly project future performance. Too bad so much money is always tied each year into signing bonuses for players potential and how much of that money is just wasted when they don't plan out
  15. A perfect example of the new analytics statistical crap the had engulfed baseball. Baseball is a results oriented game. To bring up some stats on bad luck and Barrell rates to make a .175 hitter look good is exactly what is wrong with baseball. Jeffers is what he is:. A below average major league catcher. Use the eye test. It speaks volumes.
  16. Well a great win all the way through!! I look at those games against tank, rays, jays as very good. However that 3-7 mark leading up to that is concerning. No I'm not a pessimist. Just a huge missed opportunity to expand the division lead there. I'm happy the twins are in first place but believe we should be 6 or 7 up at this point given our level of play and the division weakness. Twins, especially Baldelli managing have already cost us several games. We should be much further ahead. Those 8 games coming up with Cleveland I expect us to go 5-3 or 6-2. That would be awesome. But the truth is you never know from one day to the next if the offense will show up if the pitching will hold up or if Rocco will ""manage" to lose some games. Go Twins. Hope they win on Sunday. Otherwise you just lose a series to another sub .500 team
  17. The game was a disaster. And so is Rocco's handling of the pitching staff. With the previous day off the bullpen was rested enough that Smeltzer should have been lifted earlier. Granted that decision didn't cost them the game as the team played poorly all around. Keep making excuses for Archer. Well he needs to be stretched out at some point. He's been an ok additio n but not great. My guess is if not for his prior connection to Baldelli he probably wouldn't be pitching in the majors right now.
  18. I agree Arraez deserves to start the all star game. However, as previously stated, it's unlikely for it to happen. He's listed as a first baseman on ballot which is understandable but he is more of a utility man. He sure deserves to play a lot in the game. Where would the Twins be without him?
  19. I highly doubt Madea will be back this year. The team is very cautious about injuries. Sometimes it seems overly cautious. Look at the way they handle Buxton, Correa and others. A man undergoing Tommy John has to be handled delicately. I'm not sure what purpose it would serve to rush him back in.
  20. I agree. I hate this brand of baseball. The age of analytics and computers " managing" the game is ridiculous. If after almost 70 games the starting pitchers can't go 7 innings or even 6 there is something wrong. What is so great about Archer if he can't pitch past 4 innings? Sticking to plan A has already cost the team a few wins because our manager is totally incapable of in game management and making adjustments. His screwy, unpredictable lineups are befuddling. The new nerdy analytic approach is ruining baseball. Our grand old game has become a very boring big video game. It's becoming unwatchable.
  21. Good article. Good take on the situation. Although the Twins amaze me by being in first place, I am constantly reminded that this team is good but not great. The fact that they reside in a weak division helps camouflage some weaknesses. The good thing is they take advantage of that and are in first place. Pitching is suspect all around, starters and relievers. Starters don't last long enough and bullpen is way overused. You are right the offense is jeckle and Hyde. I think the question is do they have enough talent to even make the playoffs? Very questionable.
  22. Excellent article. I agree it's hard, albeit foolish to compare Arreaz to a hall of famer like Carew. But it is nice to see a great hitter again. Despite the absolute silliness of the stats geeks, batting average is very important.
  23. Jeffers is what he is:. A below average major league catcher that can't hit major league pitching. He's poor on defense as well. I don't see much for improvement. Catching needs to be upgraded. I also believe framing is a little overrated. How do you measure balls that he steals for strikes? And if it is possible, and not just totally subjective to steal pitches, it must follow that it is just as easy to lose strikes to balls based on framing. To me if a catcher is pulling in pitches they must be balls and competent umpires realize that. But competent home plate MLB umpires seems far fetched. Anyway Jeffers is just an overrated and over hyped catcher hitting .174
  24. Perhaps this isn't the year to go all in. I really don't know. But contending just doesn't happen every year. Look at 2021. We need pitching and have needed it since winter. Although a couple of good pieces were added, this pitching staff seems to be hanging by a thread. Starting pitching is good amongst the top two or so but then a big dropoff. Starters have to consistently get us through 6 innings. The bullpen is average at best and will only wear down more due to overuse. We need help if plan is to contend this year. If not then I don't think we should give up much in prospects. However, prospects are just that:. Prospects until they have proven themselves at the major league level .
  25. DFA Gonzales is no problem. Maybe DFA Rocco. Yes the Twins won again in spite of him. My contention has been if he would actually be a manager the team could be a lot further ahead in the standings. His "decision" to rest both Buxton and Correa on the same day, in front of a home crowd is pure foolishness. The fact they won is a stroke more of luck than managing. Listening to Rocco's explanation for resting both on the same day is more proof of his poor management skills. By saying and implying he doesn't know how to handle it when those two happen to have scheduled days off on the same day is further proof he is inflexible and about the poorest in game manager in the majors. It's cost the team plenty of games already and will in the future. Not sure why they call him manager when he should be called computer analyst. Had the Twins lost yesterday all of the anti Rocco people would have been rightfully blasting him. To not know how to fix days off, how to not know how to fix the lineup so that doesn't happen is inexcusable. To not have your best players in the lineup, especially at home and especially when one of them has been mashing home runs is befuddling.
