Instant Reaction: Twins Pass on Trade Deadline
LastOnePicked replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It is odd that very few fans seem to think this is at all related to coaching. I was glad to see you mention it later in your post. But, come on, if the FO thinks the roster needed no changes, then isn't this chronic underperformance anybody's fault? Is it so strange to think that Baldelli or Popkins should have been replaced? It's just so bizarre to me.- 49 replies

Takes me back to the Terry Ryan days. At least Ryan could be occasionally good with adding a helpful piece. Usually at that old second waiver wire deadline. But as others have mentioned, this FO certainly seemed spooked by their disastrous 2022 deadline trades. Whether it's Gallo whiffing, Pagan sinking high-leverage situations or Baldelli's inability to help the team establish any real momentum, they've decided to stay the course to the bitter end. It certainly seems like it will bitter again for us Twins fans. If so, I hope it's finally the end for them.

Guess they had some flashbacks of last year's deadline moves. -

Sadly, this FO doesn't have the luxury of finding another trade partner as foolish as they were last year.

How'd hiring Rocco Baldelli work out for the Twins? Jokes aside, you've picked a good cherry. Perhaps the Twins could avoid hiring La Russa, I agree.

"They’ve only had a single game—a tough shut out against Seattle’s George Kirby—where they didn’t score at least three runs." Didn't they lose 2-1 yesterday?

Good article, and a position very contrary to mine. I've stated on multiple threads that I think the window of contention slammed shut after 2020, and that a rebuild is overdue. HOWEVER ... I could accept a "push all the clips in" trade deadline IF AND ONLY IF I saw some sense of urgency from the FO. Urgency means ... Firing Rocco immediately. He's proven incapable of leading, inspiring or developing the team. Replace him with a seasoned manager with playoff experience, if possible. Firing Tingler immediately. He's got the stink of the 2021 Padres still all over him, and the only thing I've heard him "credited" for this year is being the "Gallo whisperer." How has that worked out? Firing Popkins immediately. The Twins approach at the plate is beyond ridiculous at this point. Releasing Gallo and Pagan. Enough is enough. Once you've cleared out the clear barriers to success, then sure, pry that window open and give 2023 your best shot. But you could put any all-star on this club with this terrible management, soft spirit and low morale and it would wreck anybody you bring in at the deadline, no matter how big a name. Change the culture first,

Well, apparently you know what's on the mind of every GM and FO, so what can I tell you? However, if you want to expand your opinion, check out some of the interviews the Orioles GM gave in 2020 about their plan. Here's the gist: no, their immediate objective was not to make the playoffs. Their immediate objective was to ready themselves for a title run in the toughest division in baseball. Perhaps your argument is that, because the Twins are seemingly close to the playoffs this year, that they should push hard to make it. My argument is that this team is not close to playoff caliber. Not even close. This should have been year 3 of a rebuild. But we'll all have to see how it plays out.

No, it isn't. Some teams know that their talent can't match that goal. Therefore, they conserve resources, avoid making bad trades and create a plan for success later on. The worst thing to do in this game is to push in all your chips with a bad hand. You lose in the short term and the long term that way. That was 2022 in a nutshell for the Twins. That's shaping up to be 2023 as well. Even if this team makes the playoffs by some continued Cleveland underperformance, all anyone would see is the playoff futility streak extended to 0-20. No crystal ball needed for that, I assure you.

Orioles created a plan, followed through and now own the toughest division in baseball. Reds had multiple seasons of fire sales, only to play electric baseball in 2023. Before that, we saw the Astros and Rays move from nothing teams to powerhouses. You get a brilliant GM, a rock-solid development staff and you reap the reward from high draft picks and smart trades. Yes, it means some basement-dwelling baseball for a decent chunk of years. Honestly, I'd much rather watch a group of young players gel than to watch the likes of Gray, Correa and Gallo underperform.

One step forward, then the next step on a banana peel. Not quite the same situation as 2022, but the ending is starting to feel awfully similar.

You're right, of course. Whatever has this proud organization - and this all-star squad - done over the last few years to lead me to such unwarranted skepticism? No worries - pay me no mind.

Easy. I've been a Twins fan for awhile now. As they say, when faced with an uncertain outcome, "the trend is your friend." Besides, same captain and same boat and same navigational philosophy. Typically yields the same result. But, as I say, we'll see.

Here's the potential problem, though: they tried the same thing last year and failed. That means you get zero value for players who have no future here, plus you lose future value - sometimes incredible value - in prospects. The Twins are on the exact same trajectory as last year. Besides, even if they sneak into the division title, extending the losing streak to 20 games seems all but assured with this squad. But we'll just have to see how it all plays out.

Emotions run strong in all kinds of directions, and bad decisions can be made just as easily on hope as they can on "panic." And I don't see much panic from Twins fans. I see justifiable and clear-eyed skepticism. Put this team in the AL East, and the playoffs are a pipe dream. A scenario where the Twins further thin their already-thin farm system through deadline trades, only to fall short in making the playoffs in the easiest division in baseball isn't some panicked, imagined scenario from "surly" longtime fans - it's the reliable recent trend. In fact, it's a very likely outcome for 2023. But sure, keep swiping at the fans who are warning about icebergs on the horizon. I mean, what damage can a little ice do to a steel ship anyways, right?

The Twins Should be Shopping Sonny Gray

The Twins Should be Shopping Sonny Gray

Sometimes, I wish we played in the AL East. By now it would be abundantly clear that we should be sellers. Instead, the AL Central gives the fanbase false hope and the FO false cover. No, this is not a playoff-caliber team. Not even close. This team has been bleeding talent over the last few years. We have got to start getting value back for value signed. We should be sellers, but instead we'll be buyers, losing the likes of Wallner, Rodriguez or Lee in the process.
