  1. The game has changed so much since 87 that comparing the 23 Twins with that team is meaningless. There were 2 fewer playoff rounds back then. And going all the way back to 87 ignores the last 20 (!) years of Twins playoff futility, which is equally relevant to this year's squad. IMO Souhan comes off as an old fart here. Twins fans under the age of 40 aren't going to relate to this column, but they probably don't read newspapers anyway.
  2. Mahle is a free agent at the end of this season and is out with TJ surgery, so the Twins have already reaped all the benefits they are going to get from this trade. If Mahle makes a comeback with the Twins, it wouldn't change the fact that this was a bad trade.
  3. Not long ago teams carried long relievers mainly for garbage time in blow outs. Generally those guys were long-time minor league starters who couldn't crack a major league rotation. Now with starters only going 4 or 5, there is a greater demand for long relief, but contracts haven't caught up to that demand. Most long relievers, I'm sure, would rather be starting or working in short relief where the money is.
  4. Let the starters pitch longer. 4.8 innings per start doesn't sound much different than the average of 5.2, until you realize that's a difference of 65 innings over the course of the season on the bullpen. More importantly the team needs to show improvement in the fundamentals. Fielding, baserunning and making contact at the plate are all lacking.
  5. For the fans, the team and Buxton himself, it was a very disappointing season. If Fangraphs pegs Buxton's 2022 worth at $32M, Maybe the Pohlads can take some comfort in that estimated value, but I don't think anyone else will.
  6. When you rely on your prospect pipeline to field a competitive team, you can't miss on a trade like Mahle, which the Twins did. It was a bad trade.
  7. They have had their share of injuries, but I don't think anyone was counting on Alex Kiriloff or Royce Lewis or Randy Dobnak carrying the team to a pennant. Besides those you had Maeda (who has been out since before the season), Sano (who was awful) and Buxton (which shouldn't have been a surprise). I don't cut the Twins any slack for Paddack or Mahle. My #1 suspect is the FO.
  8. I think it's a little ironic for a team to blame their state of play on injuries when that team's marquee player is Byron Buxton. As for Rocco, I think if he was shown the door, the FO would hire a manager with very similar in-game strategy. So it would probably be a sideways move.
  9. I think the strategy of building a rotation from young arms (who have strict innings limits) and inexpensive free agents (who are often coming off injuries or ineffectiveness) compounds the bullpen problem.
  10. They have lots of names. I feel like if the Twins made a 5 man rotation out of the best of these pitchers, and assuming all five were healthy, they would have a below average rotation. There is definitely some chaff that could be removed from the 40 man. But the Twins should be looking to add pitchers.
  11. Having a no-trade clause doesn't mean the player cannot be traded. It just gives him veto power over a trade. And signing a contract with a no-trade clause doesn't necessarily mean the player wants to stay forever. He may just want to ensure that he isn't traded to a team out of contention.
  12. Barring an arm injury to Rogers (and I sincerely hope that doesn't happen), it's fair to call this a bad trade for the Twins.
  13. I sure hope some of these guys have innings left in their arms once August comes around.
  14. I have a feeling that the Twins signed this guy because they could get him, and not necessarily because they like him. It's a classic Twins move. I don't think he'll last the whole season, but maybe he can soak up some innings.
  15. I think the writing was on the wall when Berrios was traded. If Berrios wasn't part of the Twins next winning team, then Buxton probably wasn't either. Now that Jose has extended with Toronto, it's pretty clear that he wasn't planning to test free agency like we were led to believe. Either the Twins had no intention of signing him, or Berrios wanted out, or both. I think we're in the same situation with Buxton now.
  16. I don't see any of these guys signing with the Twins coming off a last-place finish. I think we will see an Odorizzi or Maeda level trade as the big acquisition for 2022.
  17. I disagree. If Buxton doesn't like the team's chances, he can refuse to sign and force the Twins to trade him to a contending team. I would make the same point regarding item #2 on this list. The Twins can offer money, but if FA starters think they have a better shot somewhere else, then a couple million isn't going to change their minds.
  18. Maybe Berrios said he wanted to test free agency. Why would he want to do that? Maybe he felt he had a better chance of signing a long term deal with a different team. Or maybe he didn't like the team's direction. Or maybe it's just too darn cold. I think the Twins have a bad reputation with players around the league, including their own. But Berrios is gone and the FO remains, so we can make Berrios the bad guy here.
  19. Buxton has leverage over the Twins that Ortiz didn't. If Buxton doesn't want to stay, he can force a trade. If Buxton doesn't sign and has a HOF career somewhere else, it won't be completely the Twins fault for letting him go.
  20. I don't disagree with the article, but... If you were Byron Buxton, and you turned down the last contract offer, would you be more inclined to re-up now in a rebuild? I think if the Twins go this way, they need to trade Buxton.
  21. The Twins don't sign free agent starters who are as good as Berrios. They have openings but will more likely fill them with JA Happ types. That's just my observation after 20 years following this team. I hope you're right about the prospects.
  22. I can't fault the Red Sox for this. Twins fans would want their FO to do the same thing. Good on them.
  23. Get creative. Trade a prospect. Make an aggressive move. Throw out spring training invites by the dozens. Basically, do more. Honestly, I think there was (and is) still plenty of room for a Kyle Gibson in this staff.
  24. I'll be surprised if he pitches 40 innings in 2020.
  25. "Not wanting to come here" meaning a combination of factors; bad weather, high taxes, lack of horse stables, what have you. I also mean the contract terms that were (or weren't) offered, and the Twins reputation around the league. So what I mean to ask is, did Falvine not improve the rotation because they have faith? Or because they struck out?
