  1. Great job Nick! Teams who are serious know defense up the middle is essential for winning, any offense is icing on the cake. The Correa/ Vazquez duo has saved us a lot of runs. The strikeouts are piling up & HRs are hard to come by we need their defense to compete. With the experience they pass on they are well worth the money spent. Where would we be w/o them. for one we'd have been swept by LAD. Very interesting that that Correa relay was planned which makes all the sense in the world because of Correa's arm. It'd was incredible if there was any bobble, any off throw, decrease in velo or hesitation in what to do, Ohtani would have been safe. It was more than perfect. That experience of Correa / Vazquez is invaluable.
  2. One thing that have stuck out in my mind is how Kirby Puckett mentored Tori Hunter. I have my doubts on how much a prospect learns from coaches & that they learn so much more by being tutored by a greatly experienced veteran at their position. Puckett started a tradition of mentoring Hunter, Hunter to Span, Span to Revere. That tradition was broken when the Twins traded both Span & Revere at the same time. figuring that maybe Hick was so good that he didn't need mentoring. That broke the tradition & Hicks could have benefited from being mentored. Buxton has so much natural talent, I don't know how much he can teach younger players. I'm sure there's something. I don't see any stand-out defensive CF that comes close to Buck. I see both E Rodriguez & Jenkins not sticking at CF, I hope they won't be our best defensive options there. SS & catching are both very important positions. IMO Correa's value isn't only what he produces on the field which is remarkable but also what he mentors to the younger players in his experience.
  3. Good to see our best defensive catcher in the system, Cardenas continue his clutch hitting. Seems like Salas & Cavaco been moved off their positions SS to 2B & 3B to 1B as expected. Although very different hitters, E Rodriguez like E Rosario have a flare for dramatics.
  4. Yes sir Ted, This is an important series. Hope with an extra day off they can get away from the "all or nothing" approach. Gets some key hits & not SO, win some games!
  5. I don't think Correa will ever try to steal another base. We need Castro to get on base to steal those bases. Even though Buxton is excited about his new found health, I tend to believe his stolen bases will be limited. Martin is the one I'm really excited about running the bases. I'm not really concerned about Julien's offensive speed, although he leads off. What I'm really concerned about is his defensive speed (range). You can cheat a little to help his OAA but if a hitter doesn't hit as you expect you are vulnerable. Also you have Correa & Santana cheat towards Julien (further from the line) to compensate which makes them vulnerable. I'm not able to watch a lot of games but it seems to me that there are a few GBs are getting through that shouldn't. All this because the Twins are dead set of having Julien playing 2B.
  6. I saw Tom's podcast, Olivar made a great play in LF. Olivar is very athletic with a lot of potential of being a terrific catcher once they start to develop him there.
  7. I love Arraez's bat but I was in favor of this trade a year before it happened, a win/ win trade. I'd love another MIA SP trade.
  8. Great pitching, great defense with Correa & Vazquez & great hitting with Julien. Some close games with LAD using our 3rd, 4th and 5th SP not a bad series. Hopefully the offense will really click against DET.
  9. Being that exceptional CFer is foundational, that's his identity. When that is established his hitting will fall into place. Offensively it was easy when Lewis was around to fire up everybody but now he has to work at it.
  10. This offseason, I figured that MLB would adjust to Kepler & it'd be hard for Kepler to readjust. Losing Kepler at this point is no loss. With 20 ABs he has SO 6Xs, has hit 0 HRs, triples or even doubles. I was against signing Santana, he's been a waste of money & time taken away from Julien, Kiriloff & Miranda at 1B,
  11. 1. Martin for sure can be an everyday player & eventually lead off. 2. I was against signing Santana over playing Julien, Kiriloff & Miranda at 1B. 3. From the beginning, I was against trading (group 1) Polanco 4. Kiriloff is a pure hitter IMO should be in the line-up every day, whether it's 1B, OF or DH
  12. IMO they could have found a better gem in the rough but maybe this coaching staff saw something that the last missed.
  13. I'm a fan of Martin, & stood up for him against all the negative hype that's floating around. I knew it was a matter of time before Martin would start rolling. RH Martin showed that he can play every day by hitting ace RHP Glasnow which very few on this team have shown that they can. I believe that Martin will prove me right that he'll impact the Twins much more than many believe. Varland had pitched 3 great innings, I advocated & still am for Varland to piggyback with Paddack. To gradually add to his innings. Bring up Headrick to help supplement the pitching staff. The BP have been very good, A BP game against LAD, IMO was not out of the question. We out-homered the opposition but lost again. We haven't hit very many HRs but when we have, many times they are solos. Focusing on HRs isn't the answer it's getting clutch hits not striking out in the clutch. I hate to keep hitting a dead dog but I don't think the dog is dead. & this FO will try to resuscitate the dog when they finally turn things around. (sorry about the analogy, I'd never beat a dog)
  14. Great presentation Theo! The league has got the Twins number & the Twins doubled down. If the Twins abandon their long-time-hitting approach, we'll be better off in the long run. IMO it'll take some time for those most affected players.
  15. I guess I'm old school (I hate SOs) & I haven't come close to face what hitters have to face now. So nowadays with the pitchers they have now that hitters are at a great disadvantage & are at the whim of the pitcher & the umpire to call a good game (more reason to have robo umps). You're lucky if you get a hit. IMO it's easier not to SO when you shorten your swing than putting on your HR swing, especially with 2 strikes. It's hard for me to imagine not to be defensive at the plate, especially with 2 strikes.
  16. A good hitter fouls off pitches that he doesn't like, he doesn't look at them, especially on 3rd strike.
  17. Always thought that DH was a sore spot since Cruz. It seemed that Buxton had troubles w/ his body & DH mindset to excel at that position.
  18. Except for the overall poor offense again, it was a good game. Great to see Buck making those plays out there. LAD got lucky with some scrub hits against Okert. Even though Okert didn't give up much LAD took what he gave them & not SO. More playing time Martin sees on the MLB level, quicker he'll get settled in & contribute more to the offense .
  19. I am 100% in favor of an electronic strike zone calling. I don't think that too many hockey fans would like to go back to a human calling goals instead of the electronic goal indicator. What is most important is unbiased fairness. Pitcher & batter enter the box knowing exactly what the strike zone is, relieves the pressure from the ump so they focus on other things, speeds up the game by avoiding player/ coach confrontations. I don't want a game to be determined by blown calls.
  20. I don't think it's a bad idea to bring up Headrick earlier as a long RP to help out the rotation & short relief
  21. Pitchers have figured the Twins out, not only getting the SOs but also limiting HRs. From the beginning, I stated that pitchers will adjust to Kepler & that Kepler will have difficulty to readjust. I disagree with you Ted that the "all or nothing" has nothing to do with the slump. It has everything to do with it, Blaming Castro, Farmer & Martin for our problems is absurd because everyone but Kiriloff, to some extent Correa & a limited Lewis have been absolutely terrible. It's a team problem caused by a team-hitting approach that results in SOs especially in clutch situations instead of clutch hits. We lost 2 of our best clutch hitters. We have had this hitting approach taking priority for a long time. It'll take a little while to turn the ship but at least they are starting to turn.
  22. Back in '21 & also again in '22, the Twins were accused of using a type of "all or nothing" approach. Falvey denied it because the stats were terrible. he then blamed the batting coachs & fired them. The 1st chance he had after the Twins finished a successful '23 season. he credited the "all or nothing" approach to the Twins' success. I couldn't help but laugh & shake my head.
  23. To help out Julien's lack of range & improve his OAA, they have him cheat a lot. Which really hurts him & yield him vulnerable when batters don't get around on the pitches. It seems a lot of GBs got thru on the right side that a good 2Bman should get, especially with this series with CLE.
  24. Yes this FO is enamored by Gallo-type of hitters so they draft, sign FAs & coach all hitters to obtain this of type of hitter while not putting importance on defense & contact hitting for many years. Change will not be quick. I like your analogy but I'd reverse it. Reducing baseball to an HR derby (how boring) thinking whoever hits the most HRs wins. But fortunately, baseball isn't an HR derby, defense is important up the middle, it's a game of constant adjusting, and nobody will purposely serve up a big meatball to hit in a clutch situation, they are up there to strike you out which they normal do with this mindset. Baldelli said during the offseason that SOs were a concern but they weren't going to change their approach. They tried to offset the team's SOs by picking up 2 mediocre contact hitters that haven't helped. Now Baldelli is stated that he wants his hitters to shorten up their swing in clutch situations not only with 2 strikes. It's too little too late. That idea should have been implemented during spring training. Hopefully the Twins will change their approach by putting more importance on defense by not putting emphasis on drafting big bat only & neglecting defense, evaluate all players & develop their strengths not trying to squeeze out every HR while disturbing their swing & causing SOs. And not trading away clutch line-drive hitters especially when their glove is elite.
