    This is a very fair point based on recent years, when I think we can all think of way too many instances of the team sticking with players who are flailing or clearly have run out their string. Why else does the name Pagán still make my blood pressure shoot up so high! I’ve seen the question posed here and elsewhere whether it’s Rocco or the front office that have this frustrating tendency to give people so long a hang rope …

    Admittedly, I’m an optimist about baseball when it comes round to February - in contrast to what I often see as pessimism and angst and anticipation of disappointment in comments on this site. Plenty of time for those emotions when the season’s well underway! As this applies to the Gallo - Sano comparisons, where Sano is claimed to be as good or better a player - please call to mind Miguel’s boneheaded base running and iffy defense. Joey is by all accounts a savvy and opportunistic runner, an excellent defender, and in general not someone I’m prepared to bemoan and dismiss before he’s played a single game for the home team.

    Really cool, thanks! I bit on a couple of the $4 no-fee SRO games in April and May and wonder where the ushers will actually allow us to sit. I used to take the #3 bus to games, which ran from downtown St Paul along Como Ave, through the U of M campus, ending right at the ballpark. But last year they altered the route so that no longer works. It was very convenient! I live in St. Paul so now I drive. I don’t use the direct entries into the A-B-C lots from 394. The signage on entering A or B from side streets is poor or nonexistent. I have wandered around several times looking for the entrance. Does anyone have a tip as to which specific street leads to an entrance?

    I’ve heard similarly that hitting stats in the Arizona Fall League can be misleadingly high. This is because teams tend to send some really good position players to AFL for additional work, but that they tend to withhold most promising pitching prospects due to limits on innings and the like. If a pitcher hadn’t much game time that summer due to injury or the like it can be different.

    I’ve seen this too - the original publication is classic clickbait. I wish we had a fuller context for this remark. Could be what it feels like to us, or could be misleading without seeing the whole quote.

    Watching that clip of Will Holland zip around the bases with such joy - scoring standing up and seemingly without even a throw hone! - is pure pleasure for this nearly 70-year old fan.

In the past I tended to ignore those below AAA ball, since the noise to useful data ratio is so out of whack without the sort of informed and savvy commentary you provide. Thank you!

    Very illuminating, Parker - thank you! Ryan’s Cali surfer dude/water volleyball player chill vibe disguises his sharp and flexible baseball brain. You call him “cerebral,” which sums that part up well. Good to see a young-ish pitcher not wearing down late in the season, too.

    Those clamoring for Julien (whom I also like) seem not to take account of his limitations as a defender. I hope his fielding improves before he’s called up.

    Thanks for this thoughtful and deeply researched article! I do wish MLB owners (almost all of whom have made their fortunes outside or baseball) would not limit payroll decisions to set percentages of income, but instead would treat their teams as public benefits.

    People seem not have noticed how strong an outfielder Gallo is, with his speed and arm. His former teams consider him a quality center field backup.

    I watched the press conference on mlb network. The vibe was so clearly one of mutual respect and appreciation on all sides. It was fun to see (mostly hear) Carlos interacting with the reporters we hear from or read all the time. Mutual respect there, too, it seems.

    Fun story! I bought my women’s Morneau jersey two days before the Twins traded him away. I wear it to Target Field every time I go. Probably should save up for one of those gorgeous new cream jerseys … but which player?

    I was at the park for two hours before the game even started. (Photo attached from our perch under the roof in section 308. Top of the first was a rude wake-up call after Gordon made his great sliding catch along the left field stands. The starting pitching matchups for this series have me rather gloomy.

    We took advantage of a two-for-one special for seats in the fifth row near third base. Let me see lots up close up, but also without the full perspective of the field you get by viewing from higher up. (One odd thing to me was how chatty the 3rd base umpire was with the players and coaches. I mean, really chatty.) It seemed that a host of little things cost us the game. Miranda’s throw home potentially cost us a run or two. Bogaert’s grand slam looked to top the left field wall by a mere whisker. Couldn’t tell what happened with the throw by Leon that ended up in center field. Didn’t notice Gordon admiring his hit (I was watching the ball) but he sure was motoring once he reached second base. It was also obvious that Verdugo was going to throw him out from right field when Nick rounded second. It was good to see the boys fight back. Our pitching actually looked good most of the time. Had a sinking feeling that the game would end just like it did.

    I actually enjoyed the write-up very much! Maybe it helped that I watched most of the game, up until the rain delay. Then, when I checked back, I saw we had given up another run and were down two in the bottom of the ninth. I thought, Oh, well, so much for the winning streak. And so it was a nice surprise to see (as Theo put it so wittingly) that the Twins walked their way to a win!
