    Farmer is probably the top of the list of "expendable" players for the Twins. They really needed him last off-season with no depth or help on that side of the infield. Then came the Correa signing, Lewis showed he can handle 3B, Polanco is serviceable at 3B, Castro... while they would lose their true backup SS, the depth is there. I would be happy to have him back, but I think he could be part of a package that would bring in an upgrade at another position.

    I will never have anything bad to say about TC Bear. TC was on my slow-pitch softball team circa 2006-9. Incredibly nice individual, fantastic athlete. Beware the Bear!

    I am not convinced Gray will walk. He had two of his best seasons in Minnesota and the Twins will be playoff contenders for the next few years. There is incentive on both sides to get a deal done. Market dollars, two years plus an option or two with easily attainable numbers to kick those options in should do it. There is no rush to extend the younger guys. Buy out their last 2 yeas of arbitration and a year or two of FA. Use the Tampa Bay approach. Polanco and Kepler are easy decisions. Both will be back next year. I can't see any argument to not bring them back. Effective on offense and defense, respected clubhouse guys, tenured Twins. No-brainers. The bigger push should be a permanent placement at 1B. Pete Alonso makes the most sense, but there are others that might be available. If Kiriloff comes back healthy enough to play, he could easily slide into Kepler's OF spot in a year or two.

    The best measurement I can think of as to if a manager is good/effective/etc. is did they get more out of their players than expected? Correa and Buxton were NOs, but injuries played a part of that. Miranda, Vazquez, and Gordon definitively underperformed. You can make an argument that basically every other player on the roster played at or above expectations. How many players this year had "career" level years? Julien, Kiriloff, Wallner, Solano, all had very productive years in large part to how well they were protected and put in positions to be successful (L/R splits anyone?). Getting the most out of your players... Their record was about what was expected in the pre-season. Personally, I think Correa and Buxton alone cost them around 7-8 wins. The reactionary calls for Baldelli to be fired truly need to stop. At worst, he is average. There is a decent chance he is pretty good and getting better.

    Way too early to write off Buxton. Hopefully they can keep him healthy, in the lineup, and in the field, The Twins had the right approach this year: sign a quality #4 OF and prepare for the worst. Keeping Taylor in the fold makes sense considering the unknown.

    You aren't going to replace him, but there are potential big league starters on their way up. Ryan and Ober are already penciled in to the rotation, Paddack is the logical first choice to take that slot.

    Answer this question: If Buxton, Correa, and Vazquez performed at their expected levels this year, how many more games would they have won? How different would things with an expected Buxton and Vazquez in the lineup (add a healthy Kiriloff and Lewis). Any team that makes the playoffs has a legitimate chance to win the WS. Ask the top seeds how things worked out for them this year. They were close this year and have a large push of quality youth (both pitching and hitting). Stop blaming the FO for losing a best 3-of-5 series. They are a lot closer than people think.

    IMO, Farmer and Luplow are probably the only ones really at risk here. I do not want to see Gordon back, but the price is low. DeLeon and Alcala are both cheap and young... can never have too much pitching depth. Others have earned another look (along with their cost being relatively low as well).

    With Kiriloff's ability to play the outfield, 1B was always a position the Twins could go after for offensive improvement. This just justifies it even more...

    #3 hits it on the head. I think after some time, when the dust settles on this season, this has the biggest "what if" potential of any team since Liriano went down in 2006. So many things went wrong, so many primary position players were terrible and/or produced below expectations. How many more wins would a "normal" Buxton, Correa, Vazquez have brought to the table? Add a healthy year from Lewis, Kiriloff, Polanco... Could easily be in the same discussion with the Braves... Thanks as always Stu!

    Pressly was traded because the Twins were not going to resign him in the offseason. It wasn't made to "improve" the team.

    Gray and the Twins would both be stupid not to explore another contract. Twins - You can never have too much quality pitchers (this year should prove that). He is a known quantity and his pitching style should (theoretically) not drop off a cliff. Gray - Pitched two of his best seasons in MN. The Twins should be playoff contenders for the next few years. Twins will offer him a QO, Gray will refuse and test the market. I think the Twins should offer a market-value 2 year deal with 1-2 team options that become guaranteed with reasonable goals (140 IP, 20 starts, etc.). If some other team overpays to get him... good luck for both.

    You would have thought the Rocco's handling of the SP this year would have eliminated this line of thought. He got the absolute best out of Lopez and Gray basically all year and the team had a top 3 pitching staff for the entire year. Gray should consider a pay cut to come back here. He has had his best seasons here. Complaining about Rocco's usage of the rotation needs to go the way of the dodo...

    Considering the number of commentors trashing the FO and Rocco all year for everything under the sun, I will be interested to follow the comments on this article.

    Twins pitchers as a team in all of MLB: 6th best ERA 3rd best ERA+ Lead all of MLB in team SO 3rd best FIP 4th best in walks allowed 6th best in hits allowed Yet people still look for ways to complain about how he (Rocco) handled his pitching staff this year. Amazing.

    I would be interested to see a deeper dive into this. On the surface, what you are saying has merit, but without knowing more results, it's just optics (ie it looks bad and leaves the bench vulnerable) How many times did it really leave the bench short in vital situations? What was successful, what wasn't? How many times did it result in the wrong matchups in later innings? Was the PH in the 4th inning more vital to a win than an 8th inning opportunity? On the top, there is a pretty good argument for it's effectiveness: Buxton, Correa, Vazquez, took a ton of horrible PA. Add in Gallo, Miranda, Gordon on the lower end of that spectrum and they still finished in the top 3rd offensively. You could say they got the most out of their rookies and bench guys by protecting them and putting them into positions to be successful.

    Awfully hard to argue with this approach when in all of MLB, the Twins are ranked 10th in runs scored and lead all of baseball with +74 runs in September. This is with Correa, Buxton, and Vazquez either not playing or playing terribly all year long.

    The Twins have been extremely aggressive in this regard all season. Why would you expect any changes in the postseason? Especially considering runs are historically harder to come by in the postseason... High leverage situations in the 4th inning are just as, if not more important, than in the later innings. A known quantity early vs a potential quantity later. This has been the approach. Ride her till she bucks you or don't ride at all.

    Doesn't matter what I want, what matters is his level of health and what the Twins believe: If he can swing and run with minimal issues, look for him to DH or PH. If you can add lunge and twist, put him in the field. If the re-injury risk is too high, shelve him and hope for the next round.

    The aggressive approach to the lineup is what got them here and what the players are currently used to. Do not expect much to change to this approach in the postseason.
