  1. Interesting how there is zero discussion about lowering the mound. This would decrease the effectiveness of pitchers without drastically altering the current makeup of the game.
  2. So far this year there are 143 SP in all of MLB with at least 15 starts, here are the Twins starters with their ranking and run support: #27 Maeda 5.45 runs per game #28 Lopez 5.42 rpg #41 Ryan 5.14 rpg . . . #126 Gray 3.81 rpg
  3. Quality flexibility is such a good problem to have. Arguing over the 3rd starter is semantics at the moment. Like Rocco said, we gotta get there first. Lopez and Gray for games 1&2, the situation will dictate game 3. Ryan or Maeda will get the nod. Look for Ober as a reliever.
  4. Lee isn't on the 40 man roster, correct? Doesn't that make him ineligible for the playoff roster? Didn't he need to be on the 40-man by August 31st? I believe the only players not on the 40-man roster on August 31st that are eligible are those returning from injury...
  5. All this talk of Gray being upset for the poor lineup yesterday is nonsense. Gray is a veteran that knows the situation. The games are less important right now. What is more important is that he continues to pitch well (stay sharp) and the lineup is rested and healthy for the playoffs. The more I think about it, I am really at a loss with what Gray's plans are for this offseason. Gray may test the FA market, but the Twins have found the formula to get the absolute best results from him while increasing his workload. Undoubtedly the Twins will QO him, but I could easily see him back here even if he tests the market.
  6. Item #1 requires a more in-depth analysis, especially for the pitching. Day games typically come immediately after a night game. That may not be the case in the playoffs with all of the days off. How many of those pitchers are pitching back-to-back? What do those numbers look like? Item #2 will essentially not change from the approach during the season with no "days off". The guys that management thinks will give them the best chance to win on any given day will play. Matchups will continue to be a huge focus. Item #3 Correa and Buxton are the big pieces here. What, if anything, will they give them in the playoffs.
  7. Thanks Stu. You just jinxed them.
  8. Keuchel over Paddack in the Pen. Ober over Stewart in the Pen Maeda and Ryan will be interchangeable Past performance means nothing. Health and matchups are the key.
  9. Seven years is not a huge window for analyzing drafts, but they absolutely have to receive a ton of credit so far. - They have reimagined the entire farm system with a large number of hard throwing pitchers. All of the pitching prospects on the cusp are theirs. - Complaints can be made in hindsight about the prospects they have traded, but the fact is that at the time the trades were made, they were viewed to have tied or won most every deal. - Churning out 2-3 quality starting players every year is a FANTASTIC output. They are trending in that direction right now. People complain about the FO for a lot of reasons, but I can't see how their can be complaints about the farm system
  10. Too many politics and opinions weigh into these types of awards in all sports. Players know this. Gray has had an outstanding season. Last year he complained bout not going deeper into games. This year he is averaging 2/3 inning longer per start. You also have to wonder how much the Vasquez signing has helped with him and the staff this year. I would be very happy to see him back on a 2-3 year contract, but it doesn't feel very promising...
  11. I don't think one outing will decide it. I think he has shown enough success that they have more faith in him than they do in the bottom third of the BP come postseason. He brings a different look than the rest of the staff (not all FB) and a veteran presence. Unless all the injured pitchers are back with a vengeance, it is hard to see him out of the mix
  12. SP coming out of the pen is not an issue, happens multiple times every single year in the playoffs. Assuming everyone stays healthy, Gray and Lopez are your two rotation locks. Maeda is a 80% SP lock. Ober and Ryan are very possible. That 3rd and/or 4th SP slot could be easily be a situational decision based on who they are playing, so nothing would surprise me there. Pitching DK out of the pen yesterday should give you an idea where the Twins stand with him. I would call him a 75% lock to make the postseason roster. Pitching is different than hitting. If Stewart looks strong and comes back, he could also change the BP dynamics. Regarding Stevenson, I agree with others. His role is 100% dependent on Buxton. I have a hard time seeing Gordon come back at all this year.
  13. I agree with most of this. This is the textbook win/win for both organizations at this time. You know the saying: Better to trade them a year too early than a year too late. That being said, I think the outlook is much higher for the Twins to "win" this trade. Arraez's knees are still a ticking time-bomb. The Twins were able to lock up a solid 1/2 pitcher for a very reasonable contract over his prime age years. I would also take high-end starting pitching over high-end hitting every day of the week. Lopez reminds me of Brad Radke. Head down, not always dominating but gives his team a chance to win every day, quietly a very good pitcher that flies under the radar.
  14. Assuming health does not play a role from here on out, the only locks for SP right now in the playoffs are Gray and Lopez. Maeda and Ryan are locks for the roster. Ober and Keuchel are extremely strong candidates to be on the roster. The 3rd and/or 4th SP slot will entirely depend on who and where they are playing. The others will play pivotal roles in the BP. Having a plethora of quality SP is an extremely fun problem to have!
  15. You make acquisitions by trading from depth. Larnach is an optimal trade chip: very unlikely to see time on the Twins, but still has value as a prospect. Package him for an upgrade or a position of need.
  16. Yep. Having a guy on the end of the bench that has a career OPS+ of 109, a OPS+ this year of 100, can play 5 positions defensively, 4 of them above average... For the playoffs would basically be a defensive replacement or HR needing pinch hitter. Teams never need guys like this at all...
  17. All things being equal, Gallo brings a different skill set than Gordon. A Gordon-for-Gallo swap makes less sense than some of the other moves mentioned in the article.
  18. Conjecture and Opinion. I was expecting to get a little more insight on his injury instead of a rehash of everything we already know, which is nothing. Thanks Skip.
  19. You had me until the QO statement... zero chance of that happening. Now that the attacks on Pagan are holding little merit, the angst has been redirected to Gallo. Not great, but not as horrendous as most believe. He is at the back-end of the roster, but ahead of Luplow and maybe a reliever or two. I would be surprised to see Gallo let go at any point the rest of the way. That includes playoffs. Gallo provides a lot of flexibility, with power off the bench and as a defensive replacement all over.
  20. Miranda still has a path to the Twins, but it is a lot more crowded now. LF is still a revolving door. Kiriloff could easily slide into that spot if they feel 1B is an option. However, I can see the Twins working on Julien there during the offseason, with Solano a strong candidate to return next year. An off-season move to fill that role is also a possibility. Miranda's best bet right now is to hit well, show the world he is healthy, and force the Twins to either promote him or trade him. They do not "have" to move him this winter...
  21. Thank you for the honesty in the article. My only comment is that it may be a little early to make this call. We only need to look back at Jose Miranda to see what anointing players to early in the career looks like.
  22. Yet another sadly true article from Stu. Still waiting on the satire...
  23. This is an interesting metric. For the year: Floro - given up runs in 13 of his 53 outings Duran - 17 times in 50 outings Jax - 15 times in 59 outings Pagan - 14 times in 56 outings Obviously this is a cursory stat. Leverage situations matter. Not to mention that Duran typically gives up runs 1 at a time. Floro gives them up typically in bunches. But perception is also part of this discussion...
