    Should we be surprised at how this season has started? Lopez, Ryan, and Ober have been as expected. Paddack was a wild card that blew up. The Twins lack of faith in Varland was strong enough bring in DaSclafani in the offseason. That lack of faith is showing in spades... While the amount of injuries is worrisome, they are really not the primary blame for the poor start. Correa, Kiriloff, Jeffers have been good or better. Everyone else has been exceedingly poor. I find it hard to blame the coaching staff for a majority of offensive issues. The lack of player moves in the offseason has severely handcuffed them. You currently have 12 players with 33+ PA, six of them are batting under .200, three of them are batting under .100. This is a player issue. They have to perform on the field. This isn't just a bad start, but a historically bad offensive start. I do expect some regression to the mean (i.e. improvement), but the hole they have dug is almost insurmountable at this point. The one issue that I have not seen addressed so far is the clubhouse morale. To go from the highs of last season and the initial optimism of the offseason to having ownership basically say we are gutting the team and do not care about winning. Moving Polanco, possibly the strongest clubhouse presence outside of Correa, for nothing. It is easy to see a very negative clubhouse environment to start the season. You can compound that with the high number of injuries. Yes, they are professionals, but they are human. Confidence and morale are very, very real when it comes to success...

    Not ready to totally dismiss him yet, but considering the Twins offense has no ability to pick him up, he probably needs a reset in AAA. As for who replaces him, it really doesn't matter any more. The Twins playoff chances are hanging by the slimmest of margins right now, and a 9+ ERA shouldn't be that difficult to replace.

    And now that the season has started we are beginning to see the destination that that horse has brought the team and the fans...

    With 100% blame on the Front Office and coaching staff and no accountability to the Ownership group that hamstrung the organization this winter... Don't forget blaming the culture/approach for the lack of offense instead of the players who can't hit the ball.

    You were expecting 5 Justin Verlanders in the rotation? Define pipeline. Shrewd trades for quality SP or prospects has to be in there... Up until this year, the pitching has improved steadily basically every year. After last year, there was some expectation that there would be a step back.

    I am not seeing this as a Falvey issue... yet. Other teams with lower payrolls have had years to work their way through that process. Falvey has basically had 6 months to deal with a 20% payroll cut for a team that had high expectations. The ST question is real. Over the years, it seems many players have had offensive issues at the beginning of the season. This probably needs a deeper inspections.

    This. 100% this. Rolling with Varland and Paddack without any reliable depth was highly questionable at the start of the season and looks disastrous now. The Santana signing wasn't terrible at the time, but is now looking to be a failure. The same statement can be said with the Farmer pickup... Correa, Kiriloff, and Jeffers have played to expectations, everyone else has been bad to brutal, with no reliable help in the wings. The writing is on the wall. They are already 5.5 games back with no reason to believe the ship will right itself. Those 85-87 wins everybody was expecting at the beginning of the year? 75 wins would be a godsend at this point...

    It isn't snark, it is the current reality. The Twins decided to move away from keeping/signing established players this past offseason and roll with a number of relatively unproven players with potential. You have to accept the results. The Twins obviously do not have as much faith in the youth movement as the fans. Why else did they go out and sign DeSclafani, Margot, Santana, keep Farmer instead of rolling with the "prospects" in AAA?

    The decisions weren't questionable. They made basically zero effort to improve while cutting payroll.

    The Division can't be won in April, but it can be lost. The Twins face the Tigers 7 times in the next 10 games. They are already 4 games out with three teams ahead of them. The next 10 days could very well make or break the season. Before you all scream "it's only April", do the math: Say after 20ish games, the standings look like this (it is not unreasonable to see this): CLE 15-6 KRC 14-7 DET 13-8 MIN 7-14 If all three teams ahead of them only play .500 ball the rest of the way, the Twins would need to play at a .560 clip (90 win pace) the rest of the season to win the division. If the division winner ends the season with 89 wins, the Twins need to play at .590 (95 win pace) to win. Everyone better hope the Twins fix this right now.

    You could be right... If that is the case, then there really shouldn't be an argument of him vs any of the AAAA pitchers in the minors.

    Tonkin's time on the roster will be counted in days. Will probably only pitch in mop up duty. Twins are not willing to lose a guy, even an emergency choice, for that short period of time

    MLB has many very good umpires and a handful that are utterly atrocious. It is MLB's fault for not getting a handle on the umpires union. MLB's inability to fire bad umpires is the major problem here, not technology. Technology isn't going away. Uniformity would help the viewer, but MLB has taken the stance they do not want to share the technology on how they enforce the rules (ie the strike zone) because of said umpires union.

    0-9 is basically season over. 3-3 is not. Numbers are numbers. Teams that are 5+ games back at the end of the first month are basically done. Twins can't afford to flounder much longer here...

    Young, cheap, quality SP are hard to come by in the trade market. If the Marlins were willing to trade Luzardo, any prospect outside of the top 4 should be on the table. Alcantara is a pipe dream. The Twins are not going to acquire more salary. Ownership has been abundantly clear that keeping salary down is their #1 priority this year, not winning, not the future.

    With few exceptions, reliever's performances are generally unpredictable. Much of this is due to small sample size. Many of the Twins BP guys they picked up this year have roller coaster careers. You hope that you get these guys on an up year vs. a down. So far the pen has been good. If the Twins continue to only get 4 innings out of their SP, the quality of the BP will degrade quickly.

    Fantastic feedback. Perspective on the true status of the Twins rotation and their playoff aspirations. I would also bet that that the teams with higher collective ERAs in this group had very strong offensive play, which the Twins do not have...

    Any idea on the rankings for the top 10 teams in MLB last year? I would bet the avg ERA for those top 10 teams by SP slot is considerably better for SP4 and SP5. Look at the Twins SP ERAs last year that got them all of 87 wins: 3.66 Lopez 2.79 Gray 4.51 Ryan 3.43 Ober 4.23 Maeda No Gray, no Maeda... If The Twins don't get 4.50 ERA or better from SP4 and SP5, this team will not even finish .500.

    Way to early to make a judgement here, but I am still pessimistic about SP4 and SP5. Ober's first start didn't exactly garner trust either... It is going to be a long ugly year if I am not proven wrong.

    I hope this is sarcasm, considering Pohlad's comments over the winter. The Polanco trade was more of a statement on ownership than the FO.

    Smart teams do not move players that constantly outperform their contract, especially playing a position of need. Lewis and Correa had/have injury questions coming into the year. Julien is not long for 2B. Lee is still an unknown. Moving Polanco, especially for what they got in return, was one of many moves this admin made to make this team worse the sake of saving money I would buy the "sell high" argument if the Twins actually got a strong return in the move, but they didn't. They got salary relief and fliers.
