  1. Wow, what a grab by MAT!! Thank goodness- only a SF, not a 3 run HR
  2. Another high fast ball from Ryan that results in an RBI…
  3. If the Rangers and Mariners played pretty much even, that doesn’t let the Yankees in if they swept all 6 vs the Jays. One of those teams would have to take a nose dive. And you don’t think Toronto wants to improve their postseason chances, not to mention the D-backs are in their own crazy WC race? Yankees are not going to the postseason
  4. Not to mention Lopez, Gray and either Ryan or Maeda (not so sure he’ll be in the pen yet - Ryan has to get back to where he was early) as the starting pitchers. Yes, the opponents will have their best starting but Inlike the Twins’ chances the first two games.
  5. Just like when I watched him in independent ball, McCusker has a knack for coming through in big moments in the late innings.
  6. Assuming MAT is healthy enough to return for the postseason, what about defense? He and Kepler are solid, but who would be in left as Wallner worries me with the glove. Infield - left side solid with Lewis and Correa and 2B is fine with either Polonco, Julien or Farmer, but the rotation at 1B - is Kirilloff set or is Solono there? Not worried about either C either. Maybe I’m overthinking about LF and 1B but solid defense is need for postseason success as well.
  7. Re: Randy Dobnak in the 2019 playoffs: As the Yankee fans were chanting in the sports bar where I watched that game- “Uber Driver!”
  8. Well, the same thing occurred with Correa and what happened? Never say never…
  9. I agree that this has worked out fine for the Twins. If Maeda can continue with his strong showing the rest of the season and pitch effectively in the postseason (assuming the Twins win the AL Centra) whether as a starter or out of the ‘pen, it makes it even better
  10. As one who watched McCusker play independent ball, I’m not surprised at his power. The only concern I have about him, then and now, are the strikeouts
  11. For those saying a catcher who catches about 120+ games in a season - if that can be done, great, but really, you’re just one foul ball off the mask away from that guy having to sit out at least 7 days for concussion protocol. And then how will he be coming back? Have we already forgotten why Joe Mauer had to switch to first? Personally, I like when two capable catchers can share the load, like the Twins currently have. Yes, Vazquez’s bat is not good - but heck, he’s less a liability than Gallo right now. And if you REALLY want Jeffers’ bat in the lineup more often, he can occasionally DH if he’s on a hot streak. He can then switch to catching if needed. Yeah, you lost the DH, hence why I would not recommend it every time but it’s better than switching him to 1B
  12. Keuchel reminds me of Steve Carlton in 1987 - nothing left and will not be on a postseason roster. Maeda stays in the rotation - I like the idea of Paddock if he is ready AND shows he can get batters out
  13. Forgive me if Dick or Justin mentioned it earlier, but I just turned on the game a few minutes ago and saw the Detroit pitcher is Faedo. Is he related to the former Twin Lenny Faedo?
  14. Glad to see McCusker doing well. Watched him in independent ball (Tri-City ValleyCats) the last couple years and was hoping someone would give him a shot. This update is much like his play at Tri-City - high strikeout total (fortunately not Joey Gallo-type numbers there) but exciting when he makes contact. Liked his upside
  15. In the powder blues, no less! Definitely clickbait
  16. Can’t call either Knoblach or Gaetti the “core four” since neither were on both championship teams - same for Viola and Morris. I’d call that “core four” Puckett, Hrbek, Gladden and Gagne. as for the current “core four” - it’s wait and see. I like that there’s two pitchers to be counted on for them and this makes sense, but I won’t get too down on a slow start, especially for Correa, nor too excited about a fast start, especially for Lopez. It has the potential, yes, but the certainty? Far from it.
  17. Always found it ironic that the last regular season game in Metrodome history was unquestionably its best one.
  18. One big difference with the Gallo signing as compared to Shoemaker, Happ, Archer and Bundy is the team already has replacements if Gallo falters (Gordon or Larnach come to mind) while the others were counted on to be ready every 5th day with no viable replacement should they falter. Look how many times each one made a start with only Bundy showing any signs of adequate performance.
  19. I agree with this for all the reasons mentioned. How Harmon had to wait 4 years still boggles my mind. Oliva shouldn’t have had to wait until his 80s. Blyleven didn’t rack up the traditional stats save for strikeouts and it was at the dawn of the sabermetrics era that got him in. Something else that bugged me was Johan Santana not earning 5% on his one year. For a five year peak (2003-2007) there wasn’t a better starting pitcher in the game, he won two Cy Young’s and a pitcher’s triple crown, Sandy Koufax was dominant in a 5 year period and he’s a no doubter but Santana isn’t worthy of 5%? And NO, I am not saying Santana was Koufax - just that if a five year period of greatness is enough for one, why not all? Plus…I am sure if his peak years were with the Mets and his injury-plagued ones were with the Twins, he’s either in or very close.
  20. I’m right there with you. You can argue that there’s no true ace, and I won’t disagree, but it’s a solid rotation top to bottom. I feel good with any of these guys making a start - can’t say I felt that way last year with Bundy and Archer. I also agree on the need for a long man in the bullpen. Jax or Winder, maybe?
  21. I was surprised you didn’t add the annual off-season mantra - that the team/FO/Pohlads are too cheap to spend money on pitching. It gets very tiresome after awhile. I think the Twins, if healthy, stand a good chance to win a weak AL Central.
  22. Is it just me, or does anyone else think Carlos made a huge mistake in opting out? Had he not, he would be guaranteed at least another $35 M and getting ready for spring training instead of all this drama.
  23. Steven, I will be in attendance at the Saturday game at Yankee Stadium. Will have to meet up - being a Twins fan in upstate NY leads to a lot of pity and teasing, so it will be nice to meet a friendly face ther.
  24. Great article - I was like you in the early days of the Metrodome with that many games - unfortunately I missed 1987 as I was in the Navy at the time (although my one game that year was great - game 1 of the ALCS). Moved to upstate NY in 1997 after meeting who is now my wife but since then I have seen the Twins once every time they visit NY, whether Yankee Stadium or Shea/Citi Field, including the 2017 Wild Card game. As you can imagine, much heartbreak there. Finally made it back to Target Field this year for the first time in 9 years for two games vs the Angels and White Sox at the last home stand. In NYC, I always wear Twins gear and am happy to usually find at least a few other Twins fans in my area of the ballpark. Since I don’t know when my next trip back to MN will be, please keep writing articles like this. I really enjoyed my two games at Target Field this year despite the team’s record at the time. And they won both games, making my all-time Target Field record 5-1 (saw 2 wins in 2012 and a win and loss in 2013).
  25. Meaningless to you, maybe, but because I hadn’t been to Target Field in 9 years, the Bailey Ober start on September 27 was special to me because I was there and saw a great pitching performance, something I always like. Hoping that is something we will see more often from him in 2023.
